THE BABY WASN’T THE ONLY LIE / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12: Two Heartbeats and One Terrible Confession

The hospital corridor smelled of antiseptic and coffee.

I arrived at 9:18 p.m.

Vanessa was in a private maternity room, surrounded by nurses.

She looked exhausted.

Her hair was damp, and her hands gripped the bedsheets.

When she saw me, she began crying.

“Marcus.””

I stood near the doorway.

“What's happening?””

The doctor approached.

“Mrs. Hale is experiencing premature labor. We're monitoring both babies closely.””

I nodded.

“Are they okay?””

“For now, their heart rates are stable.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why didn't you tell me about the twins?””

She closed her eyes.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

“Of losing everything.””

I stared at her.

“You've already lost my trust.””

She began crying harder.

“Please don't say that.””

A nurse adjusted the monitor.

Two distinct heartbeats filled the room.

Fast.

Steady.

Separate.

I listened without moving.

Two babies.

Two fathers.

One woman who had spent months lying to everyone.

The doctor glanced at Vanessa.

“Do you want us to contact the biological fathers?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“Why not?””

She swallowed.

“Because I don't want either of them here.””

I frowned.

“Ethan is in custody.””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

“He was arrested after taking Noah.””

She began crying again.

“Then Daniel?””

“I don't know where he is.””

Vanessa turned toward the window.

“Good.””

I stared at her.

“Why good?””

She didn't answer.

The doctor asked me to step outside.

I followed him into the hallway.

“Mr. Hale, there's something we need to discuss.””

“What?””

He lowered his voice.

“Your wife's medical history contains several inconsistencies.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What kind?””

“Her previous pregnancy records don't match the information she provided during admission.””

I leaned against the wall.

“Can you explain?””

He checked his tablet.

“According to the original hospital records, Vanessa delivered two babies twelve years ago. But her current medical history lists only one previous child.””

I looked at him.

“She told everyone the other baby died.””

“There's no death certificate in the system.””

I closed my eyes.

“Of course there isn't.””

The doctor continued.

“There's also a record of a fertility procedure performed under your name several months before the current pregnancy.””

I frowned.

“That's impossible.””

“That's what we need to establish.””

I looked through the window.

Vanessa was staring at the monitor.

“Doctor, is she going to be okay?””

“We're doing everything we can.””

I nodded.

Then my phone rang.

Andrew.

I answered.

“What's happened?””

“Marcus, the police have recovered a second phone from Ethan's warehouse.””

I closed my eyes.

“What was on it?””

“Messages between Ethan and Daniel. They're discussing the current pregnancy.””

My stomach tightened.

“What do they say?””

Andrew hesitated.

“Daniel believed he was the father of one baby. Ethan believed he was the father of the other.””

“That much I know.””

“There's more. They were discussing an arrangement involving the children after birth.””

I gripped the phone.

“What arrangement?””

“They intended to have one baby registered under Ethan's name and the other under Daniel's. But Vanessa had apparently agreed to list you as the father of both.””

I stared at the hospital wall.

“Why?””

“Because she wanted to maintain access to your property and financial accounts.””

I felt sick.

“Did they know she was pregnant with twins?””

“Yes.””

“Then why were they arguing?””

Andrew's voice became serious.

“Because one of the babies may not be biologically related to either man.””

I looked through the glass.

Vanessa was crying.

I lowered my voice.

“Who could the father be?””

Andrew didn't answer immediately.

Then he said:

“There's a third name in the messages.””

My chest tightened.

“Whose?””

“Your name.””

I stopped breathing.

“What?””

“The messages indicate Vanessa told Daniel that you might be the father of one baby.””

I stared at the phone.

“That's impossible. We haven't been intimate in months.””

Andrew went quiet.

Then he said:

“Marcus, the messages suggest Vanessa was arranging a paternity test using an old sample from you.””

I felt dizzy.

“She stole my DNA?””

“That's what we're investigating.””

I looked at the maternity room.

The nurse was adjusting Vanessa's IV.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The strange recording.

The property documents.

The birth certificates.

She wasn't simply hiding an affair.

She was building a legal identity for children whose biological histories she wanted to control.

“Andrew, I need you to find out exactly what happened.””

“I will.””

The call ended.

I returned to Vanessa's room.

She looked up.

“Who was that?””

“My lawyer.””

Her expression changed.

“Marcus, please. Don't involve lawyers.””

“Why?””

“Because this can still be fixed.””

I stared at her.

“You've been saying that since Maya ran into Noah's birthday party.””

She began crying.

“I'm sorry.””

I sat in the chair beside her bed.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked quietly:

“Did you ever love me?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you do this?””

She wiped her cheeks.

“Because I wanted security.””

“You had security.””

“Not the kind I wanted.””

I shook my head.

“You wanted my house.””

She looked away.

“You wanted my savings.””

She said nothing.

“You wanted my name on children's birth certificates.””

Her silence was enough.

Finally, she whispered:

“I wanted to make sure nobody could take anything away from me.””

I stared at her.

“So you took everything away from everyone else.””

She covered her face.

Then a nurse entered.

“Mrs. Hale, we're seeing some changes in the monitoring. The doctor would like to move you to the delivery suite.””

Vanessa grabbed my hand.

“Marcus, please stay.””

I looked at her fingers around mine.

Then I gently removed my hand.

“I'll stay until the babies are safe.””

She nodded.

The next forty minutes were a blur.

Doctors moved quickly.

Nurses checked the monitors.

Vanessa cried out as the contractions intensified.

I stood near the wall, watching the medical team work.

At 10:47 p.m., the first baby was delivered.

A little girl.

She cried immediately.

The nurse wrapped her in a blanket.

Vanessa began sobbing.

Then the doctor turned back toward the medical team.

“Second baby. Prepare for delivery.””

A few minutes later, another cry filled the room.

A boy.

Two tiny newborns.

Two different cries.

Two separate lives.

The nurse brought them toward the warmer.

I looked at them.

They were beautiful.

And completely innocent.

Vanessa reached toward them.

“My babies.””

The doctor checked the second infant's condition.

Then he frowned.

“That's unusual.””

I stepped closer.

“What?””

He looked at the identification band.

“There's a discrepancy in the preliminary blood typing.””

Vanessa went pale.

“What discrepancy?””

The doctor checked the other infant.

Then he looked at me.

“Mr. Hale, we need to run additional tests.””

I stared at him.

“Why?””

He lowered his voice.

“Because the two babies may have different biological fathers, but the preliminary results suggest neither child's blood type matches the father information provided.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She began shaking.

Then she whispered:

“Please don't test them.””

The room went quiet.

The doctor turned.

“Mrs. Hale?””

She covered her face.

“Please. You don't understand.””

I stepped forward.

“What are you hiding?””

She looked at me through her tears.

Then she said something that made the nurse stop moving.

“One of the babies isn't Ethan's.””

I stared at her.

“Which one?””

Vanessa looked toward the newborn girl.

Then toward the boy.

“I don't know.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“Then why did you tell Ethan one was his?””

She swallowed.

“Because he told me to.””

The doctor exchanged a glance with the nurse.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who is the father?””

She shook her head.

“I can't tell you.””

“Why?””

Her voice became almost inaudible.

“Because the man who fathered that baby is dead.””

I stared at her.

Then she whispered a name.

“Laura's husband.””

I froze.

“Laura was married to Ethan.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No, Marcus. Laura was married to someone else before Ethan.””

I couldn't breathe.

“Who?””

She looked directly at me.

Then she said:

“Your father.””

The room seemed to disappear.

My father had been dead for eleven years.

He had never met Vanessa.

At least, that's what I'd believed.

I stared at the two newborn babies.

Then at my wife.

And finally, at the doctor, who was holding a medical file with my father's name printed across the top.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Andrew.

*Marcus, we found the original DNA report from twelve years ago. It proves Ethan wasn't the only person involved. Your father was part of the arrangement.*

I looked up.

Vanessa was crying.

But she wasn't looking at me anymore.

She was staring at the newborn boy.

And she whispered:

“Your father promised me he'd never let this secret come out.””

The doctor slowly closed the file.

May you like

Then he asked the question that would change everything.

“Mr. Hale, did your father have another family?””
