Chapter 8: The Woman Who Gave Birth to My Daughter

The drive home felt endless.

Andrew was on the phone with the hospital's legal department. My mother sat silently beside me.

I kept thinking about the same question.

If Maya wasn't Vanessa's biological daughter, whose child was she?

My phone rang again.

This time, it was Dr. Carter.

I answered immediately.

“Doctor, I need you to tell me what's happening.””

“Mr. Hale, I've reviewed the original delivery records.””

“And?””

“There are serious inconsistencies.””

“Who was listed as Maya's biological mother?””

Dr. Carter paused.

“Before I answer, I need you to understand that these records contain information that may be difficult to hear.””

“I've already heard enough difficult things.””

She exhaled.

“The original file lists Vanessa as the mother of Baby B. But Baby A's maternal information was entered separately.””

“Why?””

“Because the hospital received an emergency transfer from another maternity unit that evening.””

I gripped the steering wheel.

“Another mother?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Dr. Carter hesitated.

“Your brother's former wife.””

I nearly missed the turn.

“What?””

“Ethan's first wife, Laura Hale.””

I pulled the car to the side of the road.

My mother looked at me.

“What happened?””

I held up one finger.

“Doctor, are you saying Laura gave birth to Maya?””

“That's what the original record indicates.””

My chest tightened.

Laura.

Ethan's first wife.

She had died six years earlier after a long battle with cancer.

I remembered her as a gentle woman who loved children and always brought homemade cookies to family gatherings.

She and Ethan had divorced before Maya was born.

At least, that's what I'd been told.

“Why would Laura's baby be registered under Vanessa's delivery?””

“I can't establish the full circumstances from the medical records alone. However, the notes indicate that Laura was admitted to the same hospital on the same night.””

I stared through the windshield.

“Was she pregnant?””

“Yes.””

My mother began crying.

Dr. Carter continued.

“Laura delivered a baby girl. There were complications, and she required emergency surgery. During that period, the newborn was transferred to the neonatal unit.””

I swallowed.

“Did Laura survive?””

“Yes. She was discharged several days later.””

I felt my stomach twist.

“Then why didn't she raise her daughter?””

“I can't answer that without reviewing the custody and adoption records.””

I looked at my mother.

She was trembling.

“Doctor, who authorized the transfer?””

“Ethan Hale.””

I closed my eyes.

My brother had taken his wife's newborn daughter and somehow placed her into Vanessa's care.

Then he had allowed me to believe Maya was my biological child.

The entire story of my daughter's birth had been built on lies.

“Is Laura's family still alive?””

Dr. Carter hesitated.

“Her younger sister, Rachel, was listed as an emergency contact.””

Rachel.

I remembered her.

She had moved away after Laura's death.

I hadn't spoken to her in years.

“Can you give me her number?””

“I'll have to confirm what can be shared. But I can tell you something else.””

“What?””

“The original record contains a handwritten statement from Laura.””

My heart pounded.

“What statement?””

Dr. Carter read slowly.

*If anything happens to me, please make sure my daughter stays with Marcus. He will protect her.*

I stared at the phone.

“Why me?””

“I don't know.””

“Did Laura know about the arrangement?””

“That's what we need to establish.””

I ended the call after thanking her.

My mother was crying openly now.

“Marcus, I'm sorry.””

I turned toward her.

“Did you know Laura was pregnant?””

Margaret nodded.

“Yes.””

“Did you know she had a daughter?””

She looked away.

“I knew she had a baby.””

My hands tightened around the steering wheel.

“And you let me believe Maya was Vanessa's?””

“Ethan told us Laura had given up the child.””

“Why would she write my name in a medical record?””

My mother began shaking her head.

“I don't know.””

I started the car.

When we arrived home, Ethan's Mercedes was parked outside.

I walked through the front door.

My brother stood in the living room.

Vanessa was beside him.

Maya and Noah were nowhere to be seen.

“Where are my children?””

Ethan smiled.

“Upstairs. Relax.””

I stepped toward him.

“Don't tell me to relax in my own house.””

Vanessa moved between us.

“Marcus, please. Just listen.””

I looked at her.

“Did you know Maya was Laura's daughter?””

Her face changed.

Ethan answered for her.

“She knew.””

I turned.

“What?””

He shrugged.

“Vanessa knew everything.””

My wife began crying.

“Ethan, stop.””

I stared at him.

“Why did you do it?””

He walked toward the fireplace.

“Because Laura was dying.””

“She survived.””

“Not for long.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“You had no right to take her child.””

“I didn't take anyone.””

“You altered hospital records.””

“I arranged a family.””

“You arranged a lie.””

Ethan turned.

“Marcus, you were desperate to have a child. You and Vanessa had been trying for years. Laura knew you would love Maya.””

I shook my head.

“Laura was your wife.””

“She wanted a better life for her daughter.””

“Then why didn't she raise her?””

His expression hardened.

“Because she knew she wouldn't be around forever.””

I stepped closer.

“Who told you that?””

He looked at Vanessa.

She began crying harder.

I turned toward her.

“Did Laura ask you to raise Maya?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

“Then why did you?””

She whispered, “Ethan said it was what Laura wanted.””

“Did you ever speak to Laura?””

Silence.

“Vanessa?””

She lowered her head.

“No.””

I felt sick.

Ethan interrupted.

“Enough. You have a family now. Maya has a good life. Why are you trying to destroy that?””

I stared at him.

“Because you used my daughter as part of a deal.””

He laughed.

“Your daughter? That's exactly the problem, Marcus. You think love makes you entitled to the truth.””

I stepped forward.

“Where is Laura's original custody agreement?””

His expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I noticed.

“What agreement?””

“The one she signed before Maya was born.””

He looked toward the staircase.

Then back at me.

“You don't want to see it.””

“Bring it.””

Ethan sighed.

He opened his briefcase and removed a sealed envelope.

Inside was a document with Laura's signature.

It stated that she wished Maya to be raised by me if she became unable to care for her.

But there was something else.

A second page.

It was a handwritten letter.

I unfolded it.

The first sentence made my throat close.

*Marcus, if you're reading this, Ethan has probably told you that I willingly gave away my daughter. That's not true.*

I looked up.

Ethan had gone pale.

I continued reading.

*I never agreed to an adoption. I never agreed to Vanessa raising my baby. And I certainly never agreed to my daughter being used to deceive you.*

My hands began shaking.

The letter continued.

*Ethan told me that if I challenged him, he would make sure I never saw my daughter again. He said he had enough money and influence to make everyone believe I was unstable.*

I looked at my brother.

“What did you do to her?””

He said nothing.

The final paragraph was underlined.

**Marcus, there is one person who knows the truth. My sister Rachel. She was present when Ethan took my baby.

Find her. She has the original recording.**

I folded the letter.

“Where is Rachel?””

Ethan's expression became cold.

“She's dead.””

I shook my head.

“No. She's alive.””

I pulled out my phone.

A message had just arrived from an unfamiliar number.

**This is Rachel. Laura was my sister. I heard what happened at your house.

I need to see you. There's something you don't know about Maya.**

I read the next line.

*Ethan wasn't the only person who arranged the switch. Vanessa's mother was involved too.*

I looked at Vanessa.

She covered her mouth.

May you like

Then Rachel sent one final message.

*And Marcus, the baby Vanessa gave birth to that night wasn't Jacob.*
