THE BABY WASN’T THE ONLY LIE / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13: My Father's Other Family

“Did your father have another family?””

The doctor's question hung in the delivery room.

I stared at him.

“My father died eleven years ago.””

“That doesn't answer my question.””

I looked toward Vanessa.

She was crying silently, her eyes fixed on the newborn boy.

“Vanessa,” I said slowly.

“What did you mean when you said my father promised you?””

She shook her head.

“Not here.””

“Where, then? Another hospital? Another secret room? Another fake birth certificate?””

The doctor stepped between us.

“Mr. Hale, your wife needs medical attention. We can discuss the records later.””

I turned toward him.

“Those records have been destroying my family for twelve years.””

He didn't argue.

The nurses moved Vanessa into recovery. The babies were taken to the neonatal unit for observation.

I followed them until a nurse stopped me.

“Sir, we'll bring you in as soon as they're settled.””

I watched the two bassinets disappear through the doors.

A girl.

A boy.

Two tiny lives surrounded by a history of lies.

My phone rang.

Andrew.

“Marcus, where are you?””

“St. Mary's. Vanessa delivered.””

“Are the babies okay?””

“They're being monitored. Andrew, tell me what you found about my father.””

He paused.

“The original DNA report was inside a locked cabinet at the warehouse. It was dated twelve years ago, but it wasn't connected to the hospital file.””

“Who was tested?””

“You, Ethan, your father, and an unidentified female.””

I leaned against the wall.

“Why would my father be tested?””

“Because he was listed as the biological father of one of the children.””

My throat tightened.

“Which child?””

“The report doesn't identify the child by name. It uses a case number.””

“Then how do you know it was my father?””

“His sample number matches a separate medical record.””

I closed my eyes.

“Where is that record?””

“Your father's old family physician kept a copy. I'm trying to locate him.””

I looked through the glass into the neonatal unit.

“Andrew, Vanessa just told me my father was involved.””

“I suspected as much.””

“She said he promised her the secret would never come out.””

Andrew went quiet.

Then he said, “Marcus, there's something else. Your father had a daughter.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“A daughter born before you.””

I couldn't speak.

“Her name was Patricia.””

The name struck me like a blow.

“Rebecca's mother?””

“Yes.””

I gripped the phone.

“Patricia was my sister?””

“That's what the documents suggest.””

I stared at the floor.

My father had another daughter.

Ethan had fathered Rebecca.

And Rebecca's mother might have been my father's child.

The family tree wasn't just broken.

It was tangled in ways I couldn't begin to understand.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?””

“Your father apparently supported Patricia financially. Her mother raised her under a different surname. When Patricia died, the records were sealed.””

I remembered Rebecca standing outside the warehouse.

Her frightened face.

Her accusation that I'd taken everything from her.

She had been told I was the enemy.

But she might have been my niece.

“Does Rebecca know?””

“Not yet.””

I ended the call.

A nurse approached.

“Mr. Hale? Your wife wants to see you.””

I entered the recovery room.

Vanessa was pale and exhausted.

She turned her head when I walked in.

“Did Andrew tell you?””

“Tell me what? That my father had another daughter?””

Her eyes widened.

I stepped closer.

“Was Patricia my sister?””

Vanessa began crying.

“Yes.””

I pulled a chair beside the bed.

“Start talking.””

She stared at the ceiling.

“Your father met Patricia's mother before he married your mother. They had a relationship. When Patricia was born, he paid for her upbringing but never acknowledged her publicly.””

“And Ethan knew?””

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Your father told him.””

I rubbed my forehead.

“Why was Ethan involved?””

Vanessa turned toward me.

“Because Patricia was the mother of Ethan's first child.””

“Rebecca.””

She nodded.

“Your father believed Ethan had to take responsibility for Rebecca. But Ethan didn't want to raise her. He arranged the adoption.””

I thought about the Christmas dinner.

The little girl with the brown hair.

The doll I'd bought her.

My brother had known exactly who she was.

He had introduced my own niece as the daughter of a business associate.

“What does this have to do with Laura?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Laura discovered the truth.””

“Which truth?””

“That Ethan was using your father's money to arrange adoptions and manipulate birth records. She found out Rebecca wasn't the only child he had hidden.””

I stared at her.

“And Maya?””

“Laura was pregnant with Maya. Ethan knew she was going to leave him. He wanted to keep their daughter, but Laura refused to let him control her.””

“So he switched the records?””

Vanessa nodded.

“He made it look like Maya was mine.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Why?””

“Because your father wanted you to raise her.””

I stared at Vanessa.

“My father wanted me to raise Ethan's daughter?””

“He believed you would give her a better life.””

“And he thought lying to me was acceptable?””

Vanessa began crying harder.

“He believed the truth would destroy the family.””

I stood.

“The truth didn't destroy this family. The lies did.””

She reached for my hand.

“Marcus, please. There's one more thing.””

I looked at her.

“The boy.””

“What about him?””

“Your father wanted him to be raised by you too.””

I frowned.

“Why would my father care about Jacob?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Because Jacob isn't Ethan's son.””

I felt the room go cold.

“Then whose son is he?””

She whispered:

“Your father's.””

I stepped backward.

Jacob.

The teenage boy in Ohio who had spent his life believing Ethan was his father.

The boy who had called me.

The boy who had been told I was his biological father.

Now Vanessa was telling me that neither story was true.

“My father fathered Jacob?””

She nodded.

“And your father wanted both children to grow up together.””

I shook my head.

“Why did he arrange that?””

“Because he knew he was dying. He wanted his grandchildren close to someone he trusted.””

“Then why did he let Ethan change everything?””

Vanessa looked away.

“He didn't.””

I stopped.

“What?””

“Your father died before the final arrangement was completed. Ethan took over. He changed the records, moved the children, and used the money to control everyone involved.””

I stared at her.

“Then who is Jacob's mother?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Patricia.””

I felt my stomach turn.

“Patricia was Jacob's mother too?””

“No. Patricia was Rebecca's mother. Jacob's mother was someone else.””

“Who?””

Vanessa began shaking.

“Your mother.””

I couldn't move.

Margaret.

My mother.

The woman who had confessed to knowing about the twins.

The woman who had helped Ethan remove Maya from the hospital.

The woman who had spent twelve years watching me raise children without telling me what she knew.

I backed away from the bed.

“No.””

Vanessa reached for me.

“Marcus—”

“No. You're telling me my mother gave birth to Jacob?””

Vanessa nodded.

“And she never told me?””

“She believed he died.””

I stared at her.

The door opened.

My mother stood there.

Her face was white.

She had heard enough.

“Marcus,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“Tell me she's lying.””

Margaret lowered her eyes.

May you like

Then she said:

“Jacob was your mother's child.””
