Chapter 4: The Little Girl Who Knew My Secret
“Her name is Lily Bennett,” Dr. Carter repeated.
I gripped the edge of my desk.
“Lily?””
“Yes. She's eight years old. She was adopted shortly after birth by a couple named Robert and Susan Bennett.””
I stared at the wall.
Lily Bennett.
The little girl who lived three houses down from us.
The girl who came over every Saturday to play with Maya.
The girl who had slept in our guest room during a family camping weekend because her parents had gone out of town.
I knew her laugh.
I knew she hated broccoli.
I knew she had a habit of collecting tiny plastic animals and hiding them in Maya's bedroom drawers.
I had even helped her ride a bicycle for the first time.
And apparently, she was connected to a secret that had been buried for eight years.
“Doctor, are you certain?””
“I've reviewed the original records, Mr. Hale. I'm certain that Vanessa identified you as the father. However, I cannot tell you whether that information was accurate.””
“Was Ethan there?””
“Yes. He signed as a witness.””
My stomach twisted.
“Did he know the baby was being adopted?””
“I believe so. The adoption paperwork was completed before discharge.””
I closed my eyes.
My brother had stood beside Vanessa while she used my name to arrange the adoption of a child.
Then he had spent years pretending nothing happened.
“Why would they use my name?””
“I can't answer that.””
“Did Vanessa ever come back?””
“Yes. She contacted our office several times over the years. Most recently, she requested the original records.””
“Did she say why?””
“She asked whether the child could be contacted through the hospital.””
I looked toward the hallway.
Maya's bedroom door was closed.
She had known something was wrong long before I did.
“Thank you, Doctor.””
“Mr. Hale?””
“Yes?””
“Please be careful. There may be legal implications involving the adoption records. I strongly recommend speaking with an attorney before approaching anyone.””
I thanked her and ended the call.
For a long time, I sat motionless.
Then I opened my phone and searched for Lily's mother.
Susan Bennett.
I had her number because she occasionally texted me when Lily wanted to arrange a playdate with Maya.
My thumb hovered over the screen.
I didn't know how to ask.
Did you adopt your daughter from a woman named Vanessa?
It sounded insane.
I deleted the message.
Then I heard footsteps.
Maya appeared in the doorway wearing her pink pajamas.
“Dad?””
I quickly turned off my phone.
“Hey, sweetheart. Why aren't you asleep?””
She looked at the photograph on my desk.
“Is that Uncle Ethan?””
I nodded.
She came closer.
“Did you talk to him?””
“Yes.””
“What did he say?””
I hesitated.
“He didn't explain much.””
Maya looked disappointed.
Then she sat across from me.
“Dad, can I tell you something about Lily?””
My stomach tightened.
“What about Lily?””
“Last month, she told me something strange.””
I leaned forward.
“What?””
“She said her mommy told her that one day she'd meet her real family.””
I stopped breathing.
Maya continued.
“She asked me if I thought people could have two families.””
I stared at my daughter.
“What did you tell her?””
“I said families were the people who loved you.””
Maya looked down.
“Then she asked if you would still love her if she wasn't really my friend.””
My throat tightened.
“Did she say anything else?””
“She said her mommy had a picture of a woman who looked like Vanessa.””
I slowly stood.
“Did you see the picture?””
Maya nodded.
“It was in Lily's backpack. She showed me once. It was Vanessa.””
I felt sick.
“Why didn't you tell me?””
Maya looked up.
“Because I didn't think it mattered. I thought they were just old friends.””
I pulled her into my arms.
“You've done nothing wrong.””
She rested her head against my chest.
“Is Lily in trouble?””
I couldn't answer.
Not yet.
At 8:15 the following morning, I drove to the Bennett house.
Susan opened the door wearing a gray sweater and holding a cup of coffee.
“Marcus! What a surprise.””
I tried to smile.
“Is Lily home?””
“She is. She's getting ready for school. Is Maya coming over?””
“Not today. I was hoping we could talk.””
Susan studied my expression.
“Is something wrong?””
I glanced toward the living room.
“Could we speak privately?””
She stepped aside.
We sat at her kitchen table.
The room smelled of cinnamon toast and fresh coffee. A small pink backpack rested against a chair. Lily's drawings covered the refrigerator.
Susan folded her hands.
“Marcus, you're making me nervous.””
I took a breath.
“Did you adopt Lily eight years ago?””
Her expression changed.
Slowly, she put down her cup.
“Why are you asking?””
“I spoke with someone who was involved in the original birth records.””
Susan looked toward the hallway.
Then she whispered, “What exactly did they tell you?””
“That Vanessa gave birth to a baby girl. That the original records listed my name as the father.””
Susan's eyes filled.
“Oh, God.””
I leaned forward.
“Did you know?””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
The answer hit me harder than I expected.
“You knew Vanessa?””
“Not personally. We met through the adoption agency.””
“Did you know Ethan?””
Susan looked down.
“Yes.””
I stood.
“What did my brother have to do with this?””
Susan began crying.
“He was the one who arranged the meeting.””
I felt the room tilt.
“Explain.””
“Eight years ago, my husband and I had been trying to have a child for almost a decade. We had suffered several miscarriages. Then Ethan contacted our adoption attorney.””
“Why?””
“He said his girlfriend had given birth to a baby she couldn't raise.””
I gripped the back of the chair.
“His girlfriend?””
Susan nodded.
“He told us he was the father.””
“And Vanessa?””
“She signed the adoption papers.””
“Why was my name on the birth certificate?””
Susan wiped her cheeks.
“I don't know. Ethan said it was a mistake that would be corrected later.””
I stared at her.
“And you accepted that?””
“We were desperate to become parents. We trusted the agency. We trusted Ethan.””
“Did he tell you I was the father?””
“No. He told us the biological father was him.””
I felt a strange mixture of anger and confusion.
“Then why was my name there?””
Susan reached for a folder on the counter.
“Because the agency sent us a copy of the original paperwork.””
She opened it.
Inside was a photocopy of a birth certificate.
My name appeared under the father's information.
But something else caught my attention.
The signature at the bottom.
It was supposed to be mine.
It wasn't.
Someone had copied my signature.
I looked up.
“Did you ever meet Vanessa?””
Susan nodded.
“Once.””
“When?””
“About six months ago.””
My heart began pounding.
“What?””
“She came to our house.””
“What did she want?””
Susan hesitated.
“She wanted to meet Lily.””
I felt my stomach drop.
“Did you let her?””
“No.””
“Why not?””
“Because she didn't come alone.””
I stared at her.
“Who was with her?””
Susan's voice dropped.
“Ethan.””
I sat down.
Susan opened another section of the folder.
There was a printed email.
She slid it across the table.
It was from Ethan.
The subject line read:
*THE AGREEMENT WE DISCUSSED.*
I read the first paragraph.
Then the second.
By the third, my hands were shaking.
Ethan wasn't simply asking Susan to allow Vanessa to meet Lily.
He was asking them to sign a new document.
A document that would transfer parental rights to a family trust.
And attached to the email was a scanned copy of a financial agreement.
I recognized the name of the trust.
It was the same one printed on the property transfer document Daniel had shown me.
I looked at Susan.
“Why didn't you tell anyone?””
“Because Ethan threatened to take Lily away from us if we refused.””
I stared at the paper.
Then I asked the question that had been haunting me since the previous night.
“Does Lily know Vanessa is her biological mother?””
Susan shook her head.
“Not completely. She knows she was adopted, but we haven't told her the identity of her birth mother.””
Before I could respond, small footsteps sounded in the hallway.
Lily appeared wearing her school uniform.
She smiled when she saw me.
“Mr. Marcus!””
I forced a smile.
“Hey, sweetheart.””
She ran over and showed me a drawing.
It was a picture of three people holding hands.
Susan.
Robert.
Lily.
Above them, she had written:
*MY FOREVER FAMILY.*
I swallowed hard.
Then Lily looked at me.
“Mr. Marcus?””
“Yes?””
“Is Maya coming over today?””
“Not today, sweetheart.””
She nodded.

Then she asked something that made Susan drop her coffee cup.
“Did my real daddy finally find me?””
