Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Room
Marcus Bennett reached the children’s bedroom before anyone else.
The alarm screamed so loudly that the walls seemed to shake.
The red emergency lights painted the hallway in a strange, terrifying glow. Behind him, Emily followed with Noah and Lily close behind.
“Stay back,” Marcus ordered.
But Lily tightened her grip on Emily’s hand.
“Emily, don’t leave me.””
Emily looked down at the little girl.
“I’m not going anywhere.””
The words came out before she could think.
For the first time since Marcus accused her, she realized she still meant them.
She still wanted to protect these children.
Marcus pushed open the bedroom door.
The room was chaos.
The curtains were moving even though the windows were locked. A lamp had fallen beside the bed. Lily’s stuffed animals were scattered across the floor.
But nobody was there.
Marcus stepped inside slowly.
“Search the room,” he said.
Noah followed him.
“Dad, the alarm only activates if someone enters.””
Marcus looked at him.
“I know how my own security system works.””
“No,” Noah replied quietly.
“You know how it works when everything is normal.””
The billionaire looked at his son.
The confidence in Noah’s voice unsettled him.
Emily stood near the doorway, studying the room.
Something felt wrong.
Not because someone had broken in.
Because someone had been here before.
She walked toward Lily’s bookshelf.
“What are you doing?”” Marcus asked.
Emily touched the edge of a small wooden frame.
“When I cleaned this room yesterday, this picture was straight.””
Marcus frowned.
“You remember that?””
Emily looked at him.
“I remember everything about this house.””
The words carried a quiet sadness.
She pressed the frame.
A soft click sounded.
Everyone froze.
The bookshelf shifted slightly.
Behind it was a hidden compartment.
Marcus stared.
“What is that?””
Emily stepped back.
“I don’t know.””
Noah moved closer.
“Dad…”
Marcus carefully opened the hidden door.
Inside was a small black box.
Nothing else.
No jewelry.
No money.
No documents.
Just the box.
Marcus picked it up.
The alarm suddenly stopped.
The silence afterward felt heavier than the noise.
Lily whispered.
“Why would someone hide that?””
Nobody answered.
Marcus carried the box downstairs to his office.
The entire family followed.
Emily almost stayed behind.
Almost.
She knew she had every reason to leave.
Marcus had accused her.
Humiliated her.
Destroyed her reputation in one sentence.
But when she looked at Lily’s frightened face, she couldn’t walk away.
Marcus placed the box on his desk.
“It has a lock.””
Noah leaned closer.
“Try the code.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You think I don’t know my own children’s room?””
“No.””
Noah crossed his arms.
“I think whoever hid this wanted us to find it.””
The statement made everyone quiet.
Marcus examined the box.
There were no markings.
No brand.
No obvious keyhole.
Then Emily noticed something.
“Wait.””
Everyone looked at her.
She pointed at the bottom.
“There’s writing.””
Marcus turned the box around.
Carved into the wood were four words.
FOR THE CHILDREN.
A cold feeling moved through Emily.
Marcus’s expression changed.
He knew those words.
“Open it,” Noah said.
Marcus didn’t move.
“Dad.””
For a moment, he looked less like a billionaire and more like a scared man.
Then he entered a number combination.
The lock opened.
Inside was a small envelope.
Marcus picked it up.
His name was written on the front.
Not printed.
Written by hand.
Emily watched his face as he recognized the handwriting.
“Who wrote that?”” she asked.
Marcus didn’t answer.
“Mr. Bennett?””
His fingers tightened around the envelope.
“My wife.””
The room went completely still.
Lily looked confused.
“Mom?””
Marcus closed his eyes for a second.
His wife, Claire, had died four years earlier.
Everyone in the world knew the story.
A tragic accident.
A wealthy family destroyed by grief.
At least, that was what the newspapers said.
Marcus slowly opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then his face changed.
“What does it say?”” Noah asked.
Marcus didn’t respond.
“Dad?””
The billionaire looked at his children.
Then at Emily.
“She knew.””
Emily frowned.
“Knew what?””
Marcus lowered the letter.
“That someone would try to hurt this family.””
A chill ran through Emily.
“Your wife knew?””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“She wrote this before she died.””
Noah stepped forward.
“Read it.””
Marcus hesitated.
Then he began.
“Marcus…”
His voice cracked slightly.
“If you are reading this, something has happened that I was afraid of.””
Lily moved closer to Emily.
The room felt colder with every word.
“Someone close to us is not who they appear to be. They will try to separate you from the people who truly care about our children.””
Marcus stopped.
Emily looked at him.
“Keep going.””
He swallowed.
“She wrote…”
His eyes moved down the page.
“Do not trust anyone who benefits from Emily leaving.””
Emily froze.
The letter slipped slightly in his hand.
Everyone looked at her.
Marcus looked away.
Because the truth was obvious.
The only person who had benefited from Emily being removed was Sophia.
Noah spoke first.
“Sophia.””
Marcus said nothing.
“Dad, she framed Emily.””
Marcus walked to the window.
The city lights reflected against the glass.
“I need to hear her explanation.””
Emily couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
“After what you just saw?””
Marcus turned.
His expression was complicated.
“I’m not defending her.””
“It sounds like you are.””
“I’m trying to understand why.””
Emily laughed softly.
Not because anything was funny.
Because she was exhausted.
“Why?””
Marcus looked at her.
“Because I don’t understand how someone I trusted could do this.””
The honesty surprised her.
For the first time that night, she saw something beneath the billionaire.
Pain.
Not anger.
Pain.
But before Emily could respond, Noah’s phone buzzed.
He looked down.
His face immediately changed.
“What is it?”” Lily asked.
Noah didn’t answer.
Marcus walked toward him.
“Show me.””
Noah handed over the phone.
A message had appeared from an unknown number.
One sentence.
STOP LOOKING FOR ANSWERS.
Marcus’s jaw tightened.
Then another message arrived.
This one had a picture attached.
Emily looked over his shoulder.
It was a photo of her.
Standing outside the Bennett mansion earlier that day.
Someone had taken it from a distance.
The final message appeared.
SHE WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO STAY THIS LONG.
Emily felt the blood drain from her face.
“She’s watching us.””
Marcus immediately grabbed his phone.
“I’ll call security.””
“No,” Noah said.
Marcus stopped.
“What?””
Noah pointed at the screen.
“The security cameras.””
Everyone looked at him.
“The person who planted the watch knew where the cameras were. They knew the blind spots.””
His voice lowered.
“They might have access to the entire system.””
Marcus turned toward the office cameras.
Then the lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
The mansion went dark.
Lily screamed.
Emily pulled her close.
“Everyone stay together.””
A few seconds later, emergency lights turned on.
But something was different.
The black box from Claire’s hidden compartment was gone.
Marcus stared at the empty desk.
Impossible.
Nobody had entered the office.
Nobody had left.
Then Noah noticed something on the floor.
A small white card.
He picked it up.
His hands began to shake.
“What does it say?”” Emily asked.
Noah turned the card around.
Three words were written in red ink.
SHE KNOWS EVERYTHING.
Marcus took the card.
And on the back was a name.
May you like
A name none of them expected to see.
The name of the person who had supposedly died four years ago.
