Chapter 9: The Daughter of the Secret

The words destroyed the room.

You are not my daughter.

Emily heard them again and again.

Not from the recording.

From somewhere deeper.

Somewhere inside herself.

Her entire life had been built on one truth.

Rebecca Carter was her mother.

Her father was Thomas Carter.

She had grown up with their memories.

Their voices.

Their love.

And now a video from the past was telling her that everything was a lie.

“No.””

The word came out softly.

Then again.

“No.””

Emily stepped away from the screen.

“That’s not true.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody knew what to say.

Marcus looked at the video like he had seen a ghost.

Sophia looked down.

Noah stared at Emily with confusion and sadness.

Lily only looked scared.

“Emily…”

She reached for her hand.

But Emily pulled away.

Not because she didn’t want comfort.

Because she didn’t know who she was anymore.

The video continued.

Rebecca’s face filled the screen.

“I know this will hurt you.””

Emily froze.

Because her mother’s voice was exactly how she remembered it.

Warm.

Gentle.

A voice that used to sing to her when storms frightened her.

“But I need you to understand something.””

Rebecca looked away.

“I was never trying to replace your real family.””

Emily’s breathing became uneven.

“Your real family?””

Marcus whispered.

“Claire.””

Everyone looked at him.

He looked like he already knew.

Sophia nodded slowly.

Emily turned toward him.

“You knew?””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not everything.””

“But you knew something.””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt more than another lie.

Emily stared at him.

“How long?””

“Since tonight.””

“No.””

Her voice hardened.

“You recognized my mother’s name. You knew the key. You knew there was something connecting our families.””

Marcus looked broken.

“I suspected.””

“Suspected what?””

“That Claire was protecting someone.””

Emily looked back at the screen.

Rebecca continued.

“Emily, the truth is complicated.””

She took a breath.

“The woman you called your mother loved you more than anyone in the world.””

Emily felt tears forming.

“But she wasn’t the woman who gave birth to you.””

The room became silent.

A strange calm settled over her.

The kind that came before breaking.

“Who was?””

Rebecca looked directly into the camera.

“Claire Bennett.””

Lily gasped.

Noah stepped back.

Marcus closed his eyes.

Emily couldn’t move.

Claire.

The woman whose children she raised.

The woman whose secrets had followed her for years.

The woman who had trusted her before they even met.

“She’s my…”

Emily couldn’t finish.

Sophia answered quietly.

“Your biological mother.””

The truth landed.

Hard.

Emily looked at Marcus.

“Did Claire know?””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Before she died.””

Emily shook her head.

“But why?””

Marcus looked toward the video.

“Because someone was trying to kill her.””

Rebecca’s recording continued.

“Claire found out someone inside the Bennett family wanted control of everything.””

The screen showed old documents.

“After the accident, Claire knew staying alive publicly would put Emily in danger.””

Emily covered her mouth.

“So she gave me away?””

“No.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“She protected you.””

Emily looked at him.

“You don’t get to say that.””

He stopped.

Because she was right.

He didn’t get to.

Not after hiding everything.

Not after accusing her.

Not after almost sending her away.

Rebecca continued.

“Claire asked me to raise Emily as my own because she knew they would never look for her with me.””

A photograph appeared.

Claire holding a baby.

Rebecca standing beside her.

Emily stared.

She had seen that photo before.

A long time ago.

She just never understood it.

Rebecca’s voice became softer.

“I loved you from the moment Claire placed you in my arms.””

Emily closed her eyes.

The pain changed.

It wasn’t the pain of betrayal.

It was the pain of realizing someone had carried a secret alone for years.

“My mother knew.””

The words barely came out.

Sophia nodded.

“Rebecca knew everything.””

“Then why did she leave?””

Sophia looked at Marcus.

Nobody answered.

Emily understood.

There was another secret.

Another wound.

Marcus slowly spoke.

“Because she was being hunted.””

Emily looked at him.

“By who?””

Before he could answer, the mansion shook.

A loud crash came from downstairs.

Everyone turned.

The screens went black.

Then Daniel’s voice returned.

“You’re running out of time.””

Marcus immediately moved toward the door.

But it wouldn’t open.

Locked.

Daniel laughed.

“You always were good at protecting people after the damage was done.””

Marcus slammed his hand against the door.

“Daniel!””

“Tell Emily the rest.””

Marcus went still.

Emily noticed.

“There’s more.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

“Marcus.””

His eyes met hers.

“There is.””

“What?””

The countdown restarted.

02:00.

Daniel spoke.

“The truth is not just who Emily is.””

The speakers crackled.

“It’s what happened the night Claire disappeared.””

The screen turned on again.

A new video.

This time, it showed Claire.

Not Rebecca.

Not Marcus.

Claire.

She was sitting in a dark room.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Emily stepped closer.

“Mom…”

The word escaped before she could stop it.

Claire looked directly at the camera.

“If you are watching this, then I’m sorry.””

Her voice shook.

“I wanted to come back.””

Emily started crying.

“But I couldn’t.””

Claire looked down.

“Because the person who tried to destroy me was someone I loved.””

Marcus looked away.

Emily noticed.

“You.””

Marcus looked at her.

“No.””

Claire continued.

“Marcus wasn’t the person who betrayed me.””

Everyone froze.

Marcus looked up.

The relief on his face lasted only a second.

Because Claire’s next words destroyed it.

“But Marcus helped him.””

Emily stared.

“What?””

Marcus whispered:

“Claire…”

The video continued.

“Marcus thought he was protecting me.””

Claire looked sad.

“But he was protecting the wrong person.””

The screen showed a document.

A signature.

Marcus Bennett.

Emily looked at him.

“What did you do?””

Marcus couldn’t answer.

Noah stepped back.

“Dad.””

Marcus looked at his son.

“I made a deal.””

“What kind of deal?””

“To save Claire.””

“And?””

Marcus looked at the ground.

“I gave someone access to information.””

Emily felt sick.

“Who?””

Marcus whispered:

“My father.””

The room went silent.

Claire’s video continued.

“Richard Bennett used Marcus’s mistake against him.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“He threatened my children.””

Sophia looked at him.

“You never told them.””

“No.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked at Emily.

“Because I thought if I carried the blame, they would stay safe.””

Emily shook her head.

“And did it work?””

Marcus had no answer.

Because it didn’t.

Daniel’s voice interrupted.

“You’re almost there.””

The door suddenly unlocked.

Everyone froze.

Then a figure appeared at the end of the hallway.

Not Daniel.

Not Sophia.

Someone older.

Someone Emily had only seen in photographs.

Marcus looked at him in horror.

“No.””

The man smiled.

“Hello, son.””

Emily felt the room disappear.

Because the man standing there was impossible.

A man who had been dead for years.

Richard Bennett.

Marcus’s father.

The person who was supposed to be buried.

Richard looked directly at Emily.

Then smiled.

“Finally.””

May you like

He took one step forward.

“I get to meet my granddaughter.””
