Chapter 8: The Night Everything Changed
The countdown continued.
09:41.
09:40.
09:39.
The numbers on the screen burned through the darkness.
Nobody looked away.
Because everyone was looking at Marcus.
The man in the frozen video was him.
Four years younger.
Standing in the rain.
Standing beside the car accident that had supposedly taken Claire Bennett’s life.
Emily watched his face carefully.
She expected anger.
Denial.
A powerful man trying to control the situation.
Instead, she saw something else.
Shame.
Marcus slowly sat down.
“I didn’t kill her.””
The words came out quietly.
Noah stared at him.
“Then why didn’t you tell us you were there?””
Marcus looked at his son.
“Because I was afraid.””
Noah shook his head.
“You’re always afraid after something happens.””
The words hurt.
But Marcus accepted them.
“I know.””
Emily looked at the screen.
“Then tell us.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“Four years ago, Claire called me.””
The countdown continued.
09:05.
“She said she found something about Daniel.””
Sophia stood near the wall.
She looked like she already knew what came next.
Marcus continued.
“She told me to meet her at the old highway road outside the city.””
“Why there?”” Emily asked.
“Because she didn’t trust phones anymore.””
Marcus looked at the video.
“When I arrived, the car had already crashed.””
Lily held Emily’s hand.
“What happened to Mom?””
Marcus swallowed.
“She was alive.””
The room went silent.
Emily felt her chest tighten.
“Alive?””
Marcus nodded.
“She was hurt, but she was awake.””
Noah looked horrified.
“Then why did everyone say she died instantly?””
Marcus looked down.
“Because I lied.””
The words were heavy.
No excuses.
No defense.
“I called emergency services.””
“Then?””
Marcus’s voice became quieter.
“Then Daniel arrived.””
Emily froze.
“Daniel was there?””
“Yes.””
The timer continued.
08:21.
Marcus stared at the screen.
“He told me Claire’s accident wasn’t the only problem.””
“What did he mean?””
Marcus looked at Sophia.
Then Emily.
“He said if Claire survived, everyone connected to her would be targeted.””
Sophia nodded.
“He was right.””
Emily frowned.
“Then why hide her?””
Marcus looked devastated.
“I didn’t.””
The answer surprised everyone.
“What?””
Marcus stood.
“I didn’t hide Claire.””
He pointed at the screen.
“That video cuts off before the rest.””
The television suddenly flickered.
The paused image moved slightly.
Daniel’s voice came through the speakers.
“Careful, Marcus.””
Everyone looked up.
“You’re finally telling the truth.””
Marcus stepped toward the screen.
“You edited the footage.””
Daniel laughed.
“Of course.””
The countdown continued.
07:50.
Daniel’s voice became colder.
“But you still made one mistake.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
“You trusted me.””
The screen changed.
Another video appeared.
This one showed the crash scene from a different angle.
Emily watched carefully.
There was Marcus.
There was Claire’s car.
And there was another vehicle.
A black SUV.
Daniel’s voice continued.
“The person who caused the accident was not me.””
Marcus looked confused.
The video zoomed in.
The SUV door opened.
A person stepped out.
The image was blurry.
But the shape was familiar.
Emily looked at Marcus.
“Who is that?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Because he knew.
Sophia stepped forward.
“Marcus.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
Sophia looked at the screen.
“You knew.””
“No.””
“You suspected.””
Marcus looked away.
That was enough.
Emily’s voice hardened.
“Who was it?””
Marcus didn’t respond.
The countdown reached:
07:00.
Noah stepped forward.
“Dad.””
Marcus looked at him.
“If you don’t tell us, Daniel will.””
The billionaire closed his eyes.
Then whispered:
“My father.””
The room went silent.
Emily blinked.
“Your father?””
Marcus nodded.
“Richard Bennett.””
Noah looked confused.
“But Grandpa died before I was born.””
“Yes.””
“Then how could he…”
Marcus looked at the screen.
“He wasn’t supposed to be there.””
Emily felt a cold sensation.
“Explain.””
Marcus walked slowly across the room.
“My father built the company before me. But after years of illegal deals, he lost control.””
Sophia added:
“Richard Bennett was involved with people who had power.””
Marcus nodded.
“When Claire discovered the truth, she threatened to expose everything.””
Emily looked at the screen.
“And your father tried to stop her.””
Marcus said nothing.
He didn’t need to.
The silence confirmed it.
Noah stared at him.
“You knew your own father hurt Mom?””
Marcus looked at his son.
“I knew he was involved.””
The boy’s face fell.
“And you still protected him?””
Marcus looked destroyed.
“I thought I could fix it.””
Emily felt anger rise.
“You covered it up.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Yes.””
No excuses.
“I was trying to protect my family.””
Emily shook her head.
“But you were protecting the wrong people.””
Marcus accepted that.
Because she was right.
The countdown reached:
05:48.
Daniel’s voice returned.
“Now we’re getting somewhere.””
Marcus looked toward the speakers.
“Where is Claire?””
Silence.
Then Daniel answered.
“You really want to know?””
Marcus froze.
“Yes.””
Daniel laughed softly.
“Then open the final file.””
A folder appeared on the screen.
The label:
CLAIRE BENNETT.
Marcus moved toward it.
“No.””
Sophia grabbed his arm.
“Wait.””
He looked at her.
“What?””
Sophia’s face was pale.
“There’s something you don’t understand.””
“What?””
She looked at Emily.
“The reason Claire trusted Rebecca…”
Emily stared.
“Why?””
Sophia swallowed.
“Because Rebecca didn’t just help Claire.””
A pause.
“She saved Claire.””
Emily felt dizzy.
“What are you talking about?””
Sophia looked at Marcus.
“Your wife survived because Emily’s mother took her away.””
The room froze.
Marcus whispered:
“No.””
Sophia nodded.
“Rebecca hid Claire for three months.””
Emily looked shocked.
“My mother knew Claire was alive?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t she tell me?””
Sophia looked heartbroken.
“Because she was trying to protect you.””
Emily shook her head.
“No.””
A memory flashed.
Her mother.
A hospital.
A woman crying.
A promise.
Don’t trust anyone who says I left you.
Emily grabbed the edge of the table.
“My mother…”
Sophia stepped closer.
“Rebecca discovered Daniel wasn’t the only threat.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Who else?””
Sophia looked toward the screen.
The final file opened.
Inside was a document.
A list of names.
At the top:
RICHARD BENNETT.
Below it:
MARCUS BENNETT.
Emily stared.
Marcus stepped back.
“No.””
The document continued.
CLAIRE BENNETT — PROTECTED.
REBECCA CARTER — PROTECTED.
EMILY CARTER — PROTECTED.
Noah looked confused.
“Why is Emily on the list?””
Nobody answered.
Because the final line appeared.
TARGET IDENTIFIED:
EMILY CARTER.
The countdown reached:
03:00.
Daniel’s voice returned.
“Now you understand.””
Marcus looked around.
“Understand what?””
Daniel laughed.
“That Emily was never hired as a housekeeper.””
Emily froze.
The room went silent.
Daniel continued.
“She was placed there because Claire knew the truth would eventually return.””
Marcus looked at Emily.
“What is he talking about?””
Emily shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
But deep inside, she knew.
Something was coming back.
Something her mother had buried.
The screen changed one last time.
A video appeared.
Rebecca Carter was sitting in front of the camera.
Older.
Tired.
But alive.
Emily stopped breathing.
Her mother looked directly into the camera.
“If you are watching this, Emily…”
A tear rolled down Rebecca’s face.
“I’m sorry.””
Emily covered her mouth.
Because the woman she had spent years believing was gone…
was looking right at her.
Rebecca whispered:
“You need to know the truth about who you are.””
The countdown stopped.
02:59.
And then the video revealed the sentence that changed everything.
“Emily Carter…”
May you like
Rebecca looked terrified.
“You are not my daughter.””
