Chapter 7: The Person Behind the Lies

Marcus ran.

He didn’t think.

He didn’t question.

He didn’t stop to demand answers from Sophia.

All he heard was Lily’s scream echoing through the mansion.

The basement door slammed behind him as he raced upstairs.

“Noah!””

“Lily!””

Emily followed close behind.

Sophia stayed back for only a second before running after them.

The mansion was dark again.

Only the emergency lights remained, casting long shadows across the walls.

Marcus reached the children’s bedroom.

The door was open.

The room was empty.

His heart stopped.

“Lily?””

Then he saw her.

She was hiding under the bed.

Noah was beside her, holding her hand.

Marcus dropped to his knees.

“Are you hurt?””

Lily shook her head.

But she was crying.

“Someone was here.””

Marcus looked around.

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

Her voice trembled.

“I heard Mom.””

Everyone froze.

Emily felt a chill.

“What did you hear?””

Lily looked at her.

“She called my name.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“Lily.””

“I know it sounds impossible.””

The little girl wiped her tears.

“But it was her voice.””

Noah nodded slowly.

“I heard it too.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You?””

Noah swallowed.

“It came from the hallway.””

Emily looked toward the open door.

The hallway was empty.

But then she noticed something.

A small white object on the floor.

She walked toward it.

A piece of paper.

Another message.

Marcus took it before she could.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then his face hardened.

“What does it say?”” Emily asked.

He didn’t answer.

Noah grabbed it.

Marcus didn’t stop him.

The boy read the words.

Then his expression changed.

“Dad…”

Emily stepped closer.

The message was simple.

YOUR CHILDREN HEARD THE TRUTH BEFORE YOU DID.

Nobody spoke.

Then Sophia entered the room.

Marcus immediately turned.

“What are you doing here?””

Sophia looked at the children.

“I came to help.””

Emily watched her carefully.

Only hours ago, Sophia had been the person who destroyed her life.

The woman who planted the watch.

The woman who tried to get Emily removed.

But now she looked genuinely terrified.

Marcus noticed Emily’s expression.

“You still think she’s lying?””

Emily looked at him.

“I think everyone here has lied.””

Nobody could argue.

Sophia lowered her eyes.

“I deserve that.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“You framed Emily.””

“Yes.””

The answer surprised everyone.

No excuses.

No denial.

Sophia admitted it.

“I did.””

Emily stared.

“Why?””

Sophia looked at Lily.

Then Noah.

“Because I was scared.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“You destroyed someone’s life because you were scared?””

Sophia looked at him.

“I thought removing Emily would protect them.””

Emily’s expression hardened.

“By making them lose the person who cared for them?””

Sophia looked away.

“I was wrong.””

The admission was quiet.

But it didn’t erase anything.

Marcus’s voice was cold.

“Start talking.””

Sophia hesitated.

Then she sat down.

“Four years ago, Claire discovered Daniel was stealing from Bennett Industries.””

Marcus froze.

“I knew about the fraud.””

Sophia nodded.

“But you didn’t know how far it went.””

She looked at the children.

“Daniel wasn’t working alone.””

Marcus’s jaw tightened.

“Who was helping him?””

Sophia looked at him.

“You.””

The room went silent.

Marcus stepped back.

“What?””

Sophia shook her head.

“Not intentionally.””

She took a breath.

“Daniel used your company accounts. Your signatures. Your authority.””

Emily looked at Marcus.

“He framed you.””

Sophia nodded.

“He planned to make it look like you were responsible.””

Marcus stared.

“Why?””

“Because if you went down, he controlled everything.””

Noah looked confused.

“But Mom found out?””

“Yes.””

Sophia’s voice softened.

“Claire found evidence.””

She looked toward Emily.

“And Rebecca helped her.””

Emily felt her chest tighten.

“My mother.””

Sophia nodded.

“They were close.””

Emily shook her head.

“Why didn’t I know?””

“Because Rebecca wanted you safe.””

Sophia looked at her.

“She believed children should never carry the weight of adults’ mistakes.””

Emily looked away.

A painful thought crossed her mind.

Maybe her mother hadn’t abandoned her.

Maybe she had been protecting her.

Marcus walked toward Sophia.

“You said Daniel wasn’t alone.””

Sophia nodded.

“He wasn’t.””

“Who else?””

Sophia hesitated.

Then:

“Someone in this house.””

The room became silent.

Emily looked around.

The mansion suddenly felt like it had eyes.

“Who?””

Sophia didn’t answer.

Marcus’s voice became sharper.

“Who?””

Before Sophia could speak, the security system activated.

A loud beep.

Then every camera screen in the room turned on.

The footage showed the mansion.

The hallways.

The basement.

The front entrance.

Then one camera view stopped.

The archive room.

Everyone stared.

Because someone was inside.

A man.

Standing among Claire’s files.

Marcus stepped closer to the screen.

“No.””

Emily looked at him.

“Who is that?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because he recognized him.

The man turned toward the camera.

And smiled.

Daniel Cross.

Alive.

The children moved closer to Emily.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“That’s impossible.””

Sophia whispered:

“No.””

Daniel’s voice suddenly came through the speakers.

“Hello, Marcus.””

The room froze.

The sound came from every speaker in the mansion.

Marcus grabbed the remote.

“Where are you?””

Daniel laughed.

“Still asking the wrong questions.””

“You broke into my home.””

“No.””

A pause.

“I came home.””

Marcus’s face turned pale.

Emily noticed.

“What does he mean?””

Daniel continued.

“You spent four years pretending Claire’s death was a tragedy.””

His voice became colder.

“But you never asked why she trusted Rebecca more than she trusted you.””

Marcus clenched his fists.

“Don’t talk about my wife.””

“Why?””

Daniel laughed.

“Because you still love the version of Claire who believed you were a good man?””

The words hit.

Emily looked at Marcus.

Daniel continued.

“Tell them, Marcus.””

Silence.

“Tell them what happened that night.””

Marcus looked at the screen.

“I don’t know what game you’re playing.””

“You do.””

Daniel’s voice became louder.

“You drove away from the accident scene.””

Emily froze.

Noah looked at Marcus.

“What?””

Marcus didn’t speak.

Daniel continued.

“You left Claire there.””

“That’s a lie.””

But Marcus’s voice lacked confidence.

Emily watched him.

She knew.

Something was missing.

Something huge.

Daniel laughed.

“Tell them why you ran.””

Marcus looked down.

“I didn’t run.””

“Then tell them what you saw.””

The screen changed.

A video file appeared.

A recording.

Marcus looked terrified.

“No.””

Emily felt a knot form in her stomach.

“What is that?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Daniel spoke.

“The truth.””

The video began.

A younger Marcus appeared.

Standing beside a crashed car.

Rain poured around him.

Claire was inside.

Alive.

Emily covered her mouth.

Noah stepped back.

“Dad…”

The younger Marcus looked around.

Then another person appeared.

A shadowed figure.

Someone Marcus clearly recognized.

Someone he feared.

The video paused.

Daniel’s voice returned.

“Before you watch the rest…”

The lights went out again.

A second later, the mansion doors locked automatically.

Everyone heard the same sound.

The security system engaging.

Daniel whispered through the speakers:

“Now nobody can leave until Marcus tells the truth.””

The emergency lights came back on.

But the television screen had changed.

A countdown appeared.

10:00.

Nine minutes and fifty-nine seconds.

Marcus stared at the timer.

Emily looked at him.

“What happened that night?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because the person in the paused video had finally become visible.

May you like

And everyone recognized him.

It was Marcus Bennett.
