Chapter 4: The Woman in the Video

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The image on the television screen flickered between static and the face of a woman who was supposed to be gone forever.

Claire Bennett.

Marcus stood in the center of the room like the world had stopped turning around him.

“Mom…” Noah whispered.

Lily covered her mouth with both hands.

“Is that really her?””

No one answered.

Because everyone was afraid of the answer.

Emily looked at Marcus.

The billionaire who had never shown fear in front of investors, enemies, or reporters looked completely broken.

His eyes never left the screen.

“Claire…”

Her name came out like a prayer.

The video continued.

Claire looked different from the photographs around the mansion.

Those pictures showed a woman with perfect hair, elegant dresses, and a confident smile.

This Claire was scared.

Her face was pale.

Her hands were shaking.

But her voice was steady.

“If you are seeing this, it means I failed to protect my family.””

Marcus stepped closer to the television.

“Claire, where are you?””

Of course, she didn’t answer.

It was only a recording.

A message left behind.

“I don’t know who will find this. I don’t know who will still be standing when the truth comes out.””

Claire looked down for a moment.

Then back at the camera.

“But Marcus, if you are watching this, you need to listen carefully.””

The room became completely silent.

“Do not trust the person who tells you Emily is the problem.””

Emily froze.

Marcus turned slightly toward her.

Neither of them spoke.

Claire continued.

“Emily has protected our children more than anyone realizes.””

Emily felt something tighten in her chest.

She looked away.

She didn’t know Claire had recorded this.

She didn’t know Claire had trusted her.

And she certainly didn’t know Marcus’s wife had seen something worth protecting her from.

Marcus whispered:

“How…”

Noah looked at him.

“You knew Mom trusted Emily.””

Marcus didn’t answer.

The truth was becoming impossible to avoid.

Claire’s voice continued.

“The person trying to remove Emily is the same person who has been watching our family for years.””

A shadow moved across the screen.

Then Claire said something that made everyone tense.

“They know about the account.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“What account?”” Emily asked.

He didn’t respond.

“Marcus.””

Her voice cut through his silence.

“What account?””

Before he could answer, Noah spoke.

“Dad has been hiding something.””

Marcus looked at his son.

“Noah.””

“No.””

The boy stepped forward.

“Every time something happens, you say it’s complicated. You say we’re too young. You say you’re protecting us.””

His voice shook.

“But you’re just keeping secrets.””

Marcus looked hurt.

But he didn’t argue.

Because Noah was right.

Claire’s recording continued.

“The account contains evidence of what happened the night I died.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

Emily noticed.

He already knew.

“Where is it?”” Claire asked through the screen.

The question sounded strange because she was speaking to someone who wasn’t there.

“Marcus, if you still have the key, you need to find the account before they do.””

The video suddenly distorted.

For a moment, the screen became black.

Then Claire appeared again.

But this time, her expression was different.

Not scared.

Determined.

“One more thing.””

She leaned closer to the camera.

“Do not let Sophia get close to the children.””

Marcus went completely still.

Emily looked at him.

“You knew.””

“No.””

But this time, his answer sounded weaker.

Claire’s final words came through the speakers.

“She knows what happened to me.””

The video ended.

The television went dark.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Lily started crying.

“Mom was alive?””

Emily immediately went to her.

“Oh, Lily.””

She hugged the child.

“Sweetheart…”

“But she left us.””

The pain in Lily’s voice broke something inside the room.

“She knew we were here.””

Emily held her tighter.

“We don’t know everything yet.””

“But she was scared.””

Emily had no answer.

Because Lily was right.

Claire Bennett had been alive when she recorded that message.

She had been afraid.

And somehow, Marcus had allowed everyone to believe she was dead.

Marcus walked toward the desk.

His movements were slow.

Like every step carried years of guilt.

“There’s something I need to tell you.””

Emily stood.

“We’re listening.””

Marcus looked at Noah and Lily.

“I found evidence four years ago.””

Noah stared at him.

“What kind of evidence?””

“Evidence that Claire’s accident wasn’t an accident.””

Emily crossed her arms.

“Then why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“Because the person connected to it was someone close to me.””

“Who?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then:

“My business partner.””

Emily frowned.

“Someone you trusted?””

Marcus nodded.

“Daniel Cross.””

The name meant nothing to Emily.

But Noah reacted.

“He used to come here.””

Marcus looked surprised.

“You remember him?””

“I remember Mom hated when he visited.””

Marcus looked at him sharply.

“Why?””

Noah shrugged.

“She said he smiled too much.””

For the first time that night, Emily almost smiled.

A child’s simple observation.

But sometimes children noticed what adults ignored.

Marcus walked to the window.

“Daniel was my closest friend.””

“Was?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

The silence said enough.

Emily looked around the mansion.

“How does Sophia fit into this?””

Marcus’s expression darkened.

“I don’t know.””

“You loved her.””

“Yes.””

“And she had access to this house.””

Marcus looked at the empty hallway.

“Yes.””

“Then you need to consider that she might know more than she admitted.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I know.””

Those two words surprised Emily.

Because they carried regret.

Suddenly, Noah’s phone buzzed again.

Everyone turned.

Another message.

Noah looked at the screen.

His face changed.

“What?””

He handed it to Marcus.

The message was simple.

YOUR FATHER STILL HASN’T TOLD YOU WHY YOUR MOTHER REALLY DIED.

Below it was an attachment.

A photo.

Emily leaned closer.

It was taken inside the Bennett mansion.

Tonight.

A few minutes ago.

Everyone in the room was visible.

Marcus.

Emily.

The children.

The person who took the picture had been standing somewhere nearby.

Inside the house.

Marcus immediately looked around.

“Everyone stay here.””

He grabbed the security phone.

“Lock every entrance.””

No response.

He tried again.

Nothing.

“The system is down.””

Noah looked toward the cameras.

“Someone disabled it.””

Emily felt a cold sensation.

The person watching them wasn’t outside.

They were still inside.

A floorboard creaked above them.

Everyone looked up.

The sound came from the second floor.

From the children’s hallway.

Marcus moved first.

“No.””

Emily grabbed his arm.

He looked at her.

“Don’t go alone.””

For a moment, he seemed surprised.

After everything he had done, after everything he had accused her of, she was still protecting him.

Then another sound echoed.

A door closing.

Marcus took the flashlight from the table.

“Stay with the children.””

Emily shook her head.

“No.””

“Emily—”

“If someone is inside this house because they want me gone, then I need to know why.””

Marcus stared at her.

Then he nodded.

Together, they walked upstairs.

Every step felt louder than the last.

The hallway was dark.

The children’s bedroom door was open.

Marcus entered first.

The room looked empty.

Then Emily saw something on Lily’s bed.

A small envelope.

Her name was written on it.

Emily Carter.

Her fingers went cold.

Marcus looked at her.

“Don’t open it.””

But she already knew.

Whoever left it there wanted her to read it.

Slowly, Emily opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

Her own photograph.

But not the one from the threatening message.

This one was older.

Much older.

On the back, someone had written a sentence.

Emily read it aloud.

“I finally found the woman Claire trusted with her biggest secret.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What secret?””

Emily turned the photo over.

Her breath stopped.

Because the picture wasn’t just of her.

It was of her mother.

And standing beside her mother was Claire Bennett.

A woman Emily had never met before that night.

A woman who had apparently known her family for years.

Then a second line appeared beneath the first.
