Chapter 3: The Name Hidden In The Paperwork
“Who helped Vanessa prepare this?””
Marcus Hill’s question stayed in the room like a warning.
Nobody moved.
Not my father.
Not me.
Not even Marcus.
The only sound was the soft popping of a balloon near the kitchen ceiling.
A leftover decoration from my birthday.
A reminder that just one day earlier, this house had been full of music, laughter, and people telling me how lucky I was.
Now I was sitting on the same couch, staring at a document that said someone had been secretly planning to take my life apart.
My father looked down at the paper again.
His fingers tightened around the edges.
“Who?”” he asked.
Marcus didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he reached into his folder and pulled out several pages.
“I need you to understand something,” he said.
“I’m showing you this because I believe you were not given the full story.””
Dad’s eyes narrowed.
“By Vanessa?””
Marcus nodded.
“She presented herself as someone trying to protect a child.””
My stomach twisted.
“But she was trying to remove one.””
Marcus looked at me.
His expression softened.
“Yes.””
Dad leaned forward.
“Who helped her?””
Marcus placed a document on the table.
A name was highlighted near the bottom.
My father picked it up.
And then he froze.
I watched every emotion cross his face.
Confusion.
Disbelief.
Anger.
“No.””
The word came out quietly.
Almost like he was trying to convince himself.
“Dad?””
He didn’t respond.
Marcus watched him carefully.
“Do you recognize the name?””
My father slowly nodded.
“Yes.””
His voice sounded different.
“Who is it?””
Dad looked at me.
Then at the paper.
Then back at me.
“It’s someone I trusted.””
The room felt colder.
“Who?””
My father closed his eyes for a second.
Then he said the name.
“Greg Reynolds.””
I didn’t know who that was.
But Dad did.
And that was enough to scare me.
“Who is Greg?”” I asked.
Dad didn’t answer right away.
Marcus did.
“He’s your father’s business partner.””
My eyes moved back to Dad.
“You work with him?””
Dad nodded slowly.
“Used to.””
The way he said it made me understand.
Something had already changed.
“What does he have to do with this?””
Marcus opened another file.
“Greg provided Vanessa with financial records, personal information, and statements about your family situation.””
Dad stood up.
“Statements?””
Marcus looked up.
“Yes.””
“What kind of statements?””
The attorney hesitated.
Then handed him another page.
“According to Greg, you’ve been struggling financially.””
Dad laughed once.
A sharp, bitter sound.
“Because I had a difficult year?””
“He also claimed your work schedule caused you to be absent.””
“That’s ridiculous.””
“And he claimed Vanessa was the only person providing stability for Maya.””
I looked down.
Because that part hurt.
Not because it was true.
Because someone had written it.
Someone had looked at my family and decided they knew what happened inside our home.
Dad walked toward the window.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
Then:
“Greg was at this birthday party.””
I looked up.
“What?””
Dad turned around.
“He was here yesterday.””
My heart dropped.
“He was?””
“Yes.””
I remembered the people in the room.
The smiling faces.
The hugs.
The pictures.
Someone who was helping Vanessa destroy my family had stood ten feet away from my birthday cake.
Marcus nodded.
“That’s why I believe this was planned carefully.””
Dad turned back.
“How long?””
Marcus looked at the papers.
“Vanessa contacted him about six months ago.””
Six months.
That was before the birthday.
Before the picture.
Before I knew anything was wrong.
Dad slowly sat down.
“Maya…”
I looked at him.
“There’s something else you need to know.””
His face was serious.
“What?””
He looked uncomfortable.
Like whatever he was about to say hurt him.
“Before I met Vanessa, Greg and I were already having problems.””
“Why?””
Dad rubbed his forehead.
“Money.””
Marcus nodded.
“Your father discovered irregularities in the company accounts.””
I didn’t understand.
“What does that mean?””
Dad looked at me.
“It means someone was taking money.””
My eyes widened.
“Greg?””
Dad didn’t answer.
But he didn’t need to.
Marcus continued.
“Daniel confronted him.””
“And then?””
“And then Vanessa entered the situation.””
The room became silent again.
Dad looked at the floor.
“I thought she was helping.””
That sentence sounded painful.
“What do you mean?””
Dad looked at me.
“She told me Greg was jealous. She said he was trying to ruin my life because I was moving on.””
“With Mom?””
Dad nodded.
After my mother died, my father had spent years alone.
Then Vanessa came along.
She seemed like the person who saved him.
Now everything looked different.
Marcus closed the folder.
“I think Vanessa and Greg had a shared interest.””
Dad’s eyes lifted.
“What interest?””
“Control.””
The word hung there.
Marcus continued.
“If they could convince authorities that Vanessa was the stable parent figure, and if they could create doubt about your relationship with Maya…”
He stopped.
Dad finished the sentence.
“They could take my daughter.””
Nobody spoke.
Because now we understood.
This was never about a picture.
The picture was just the first step.
That evening, after Marcus left, the house felt unfamiliar.
My father moved around like he was searching for something.
Answers.
Proof.
A way to undo everything.
I sat at the kitchen table watching him.
“Dad?””
He looked over.
“Yeah?””
“Do you believe me?””
The question surprised him.
“What?””
“Do you believe I’m your daughter?””
His face immediately changed.
He walked over and sat beside me.
“Maya.””
His voice broke slightly.
“Look at me.””
I did.
“You are my daughter.””
“But Vanessa said—”
“I don’t care what Vanessa said.””
“But what if the paper is real?””
He reached for my hand.
“Maya, being your father was never about paperwork.””
I looked at him.
“It wasn’t about a test. It wasn’t about a name. It wasn’t about anything written on a page.””
His eyes filled with tears.
“I was there when you took your first steps.””
He smiled sadly.
“I was there when you lost your first tooth and cried because you thought you would never smile again.””
A small laugh escaped me.
“I was there when you got your first school award.””
He squeezed my hand.
“I was there.””
His voice became softer.
“And I will always be here.””
For the first time all day, I felt like I could breathe.
But then Dad’s phone buzzed.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What is it?””
He didn’t answer.
“Dad?””
He turned the phone toward me.
It was a message.
From Vanessa.
Only six words.
*You need to see the DNA results.*
My heart stopped.
“What DNA results?””
Dad stood up.
His face was pale.
“I don’t know.””
Another message appeared.
A photo attachment.
Dad opened it.
The picture showed a laboratory report.
At the top was his name.
Daniel Carter.
Below it:
Maya Carter.
I watched my father read the page.
His hand started shaking.
Then he whispered something I had never heard him say before.
“No…”
“What?””
He looked at me.
And I knew.
Whatever he had seen on that paper had changed something.
“Dad?””
He slowly lowered the phone.
“Maya…”
“What does it say?””
He didn’t answer.
Because at that exact moment, the front door opened.
Vanessa walked inside.
She wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t angry.
She looked calm.
Almost relieved.
She placed her purse on the table and stared directly at my father.
“I told you not to force me to show you.””
Dad stepped forward.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa looked at me.
Then back at him.
“I found the truth.””
She reached into her bag.
And pulled out an envelope.
A real laboratory envelope.
Sealed.
“Daniel,” she said quietly.
“You need to know…”
She placed it on the table.
“…that Maya was never your biological daughter.””
The words crushed the room.
And then she added something even worse.
“The person who signed the test results…”
May you like
She looked directly at my father.
“…was your first wife.””
