Chapter 7: The Man Who Claimed To Be My Father
The man standing in our doorway looked nothing like the monster I had imagined.
That was the most frightening part.
Marcus Reed wasn’t wearing a threatening expression.
He wasn’t angry.
He wasn’t shouting.
He looked calm.
Controlled.
The kind of calm that made me feel more afraid.
He wore a dark jacket and expensive shoes, the kind of person who looked like he belonged anywhere he walked into.
His eyes moved across the room.
First to Vanessa.
Then to me.
And finally toward the staircase.
“Where is Daniel?””
Nobody answered.
Vanessa’s hand was still holding my arm.
Not tightly.
Just enough to remind me she was there.
Marcus noticed.
His eyes narrowed.
“Maya.””
Hearing my name from his mouth made my stomach twist.
“How do you know my name?””
He smiled slightly.
Not warmly.
Almost proudly.
“Because I’ve known about you for a long time.””
I stepped back.
Vanessa moved in front of me.
“No.””
Marcus looked at her.
“No?””
“You need to leave.””
He laughed softly.
“That’s interesting.””
“What?””
“You’re finally protecting her.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Like those words hit somewhere painful.
I looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus ignored me.
“Vanessa, you were supposed to keep everything under control.””
“I tried.””
“You failed.””
Her expression hardened.
“I didn’t know Daniel would find the documents.””
“You should have planned better.””
The way he spoke to her made my skin crawl.
Not like a partner.
Like an employee.
Or someone he owned.
I understood something then.
Vanessa might have hurt us.
But she was also afraid of him.
“Who are you?”” I asked.
Marcus looked at me.
The room went silent.
Then he said:
“I’m the person who should have been in your life from the beginning.””
My heart dropped.
“No.””
His eyes softened.
“I’m your biological father.””
The words didn’t feel real.
They floated in the air.
Waiting for someone to explain them.
I looked toward Vanessa.
She looked away.
That was all the answer I needed.
“You knew?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Maya…”
“You knew?””
Her silence broke something inside me.
“How long?””
She whispered:
“Since before I married Daniel.””
I felt like the room moved.
“You knew who he was?””
“Yes.””
“And you still married my dad?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“I didn’t understand what was happening.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You understood enough.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Don’t blame her for everything.””
I looked at him.
“You’re defending her?””
“I’m telling you the truth.””
“The truth?””
I laughed once.
A painful sound.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
Marcus studied me.
“You deserve answers.””
I wanted to believe that.
I hated that I wanted to.
Because there was something about him.
Something familiar.
Maybe it was the way he looked at me.
Maybe it was because he was connected to my mother.
Maybe it was because I had spent years wondering about the person I came from.
But another part of me remembered something important.
My father’s voice.
Blood doesn’t erase years.
The front door opened behind Marcus.
Dad walked in.
He stopped immediately.
His eyes moved from Marcus.
To Vanessa.
To me.
Then back to Marcus.
The silence was terrifying.
Finally, Dad spoke.
“Who are you?””
Marcus turned.
“Daniel Carter.””
Dad’s jaw tightened.
“You know my name.””
“I know much more than that.””
Dad stepped closer.
“Get out of my house.””
Marcus didn’t move.
“You should hear what I have to say.””
“I don’t need anything from you.””
“Yes, you do.””
Dad looked at me.
Then back at him.
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“My daughter doesn’t need a stranger showing up and confusing her.””
Marcus smiled slightly.
“Your daughter?””
Dad’s expression changed.
“Careful.””
“I’m just saying what everyone knows.””
Dad walked closer.
“You don’t get to walk into this house and claim a child you never raised.””
Marcus looked at me.
“Is that what he told you?””
I froze.
“What?””
Marcus reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
My heart started racing.
Not again.
Not another secret.
“I didn’t come here to fight.””
Dad laughed.
“You brought paperwork.””
“No.””
Marcus held up the envelope.
“I brought proof.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Marcus, don’t.””
He looked at her.
“You don’t get to decide anymore.””
That sentence made her go pale.
Dad noticed.
“What did you do, Vanessa?””
She didn’t answer.
Marcus handed the envelope to me.
I didn’t take it.
Dad stepped in.
“She doesn’t need to see anything.””
Marcus looked at him.
“She deserves to know.””
Dad stared at the envelope.
Then took it.
He opened it carefully.
Inside was a photograph.
His face changed immediately.
“What is this?””
I couldn’t see.
“What?””
Dad looked at Marcus.
“Where did you get this?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Dad turned the picture around.
And I saw it.
My mother.
Young.
Smiling.
Holding a baby.
Me.
But beside her…
Was Marcus.
My breath caught.
The picture looked real.
Too real.
On the back was handwriting.
My mother’s handwriting.
*“Marcus, if you ever come back, remember that Maya was never the mistake. She was the reason I survived.””*
My eyes filled with tears.
My mother knew him.
She loved him.
Maybe.
I didn’t know what to believe anymore.
Dad stared at the photo.
“You had contact with Lucy after she married me?””
Marcus looked away.
“Not the way you think.””
“Then explain.””
Marcus sighed.
“Lucy reached out.””
“Why?””
“Because she was scared.””
“Of what?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Nobody spoke.
Then Marcus said:
“Of the people around you.””
Dad’s eyes moved to Vanessa.
“You mean her?””
Vanessa looked devastated.
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Not just her.””
That surprised everyone.
“What does that mean?”” Dad asked.
Marcus looked at me.
“Your mother discovered something.””
“What?””
“She discovered that someone was using your family.””
Dad’s face hardened.
“Who?””
Marcus looked toward Vanessa.
Then said:
“Greg.””
Nobody moved.
Dad stared.
“Greg?””
“Yes.””
“But Greg and Vanessa—”
“They were never the whole story.””
Marcus took a breath.
“Greg was helping someone else.””
“Who?””
Marcus looked at me.
And I knew.
The answer was going to hurt.
“Someone who wanted access to Daniel’s company.””
Dad’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?””
Marcus’s voice became quiet.
“Someone who knew that if Maya was removed from your life…”
He paused.
“…you would have nothing left to fight for.””
The room fell silent.
Then Dad asked the question everyone was thinking.
“Why?””
Marcus looked down.
“Because your company wasn’t the only thing they wanted.””
“What else?””
Marcus slowly looked at me.
“They wanted Maya.””
My blood went cold.
“Why?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Instead, he pulled out another document.
A birth record.
He placed it on the table.
Dad looked at it.
Then his face changed.
Because the name listed under my biological father…
Was not Marcus Reed.
I stared at the paper.
Confused.
“What does that mean?””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You never told her.””
Vanessa whispered:
“I was trying to protect her.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
He pointed at the document.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Dad grabbed the paper.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“Explain.””
Marcus took a slow breath.
“Because I’m not Maya’s only secret.””
The room became completely silent.
Then Marcus said:
“Lucy had another reason for hiding Maya’s real identity.””
He looked directly at me.
“She wasn’t protecting herself.””
A pause.
“She was protecting you from the man who was trying to find you.””
My fingers went cold.
“Who?””
Marcus looked at the front door.
Then back at me.
And whispered:
“The man who signed your original birth certificate.””
Before anyone could speak, Dad’s phone buzzed.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
*I know Marcus Reed is there. I know Maya knows the truth.*
Dad’s face went pale.
Then another message arrived.
*Tell her the truth before I do.*
And beneath it was a name.
May you like
A name none of us expected.
*Lucy Carter’s brother.*
