Chapter 9: The Man Who Wanted To Own My Future

The voice came from the darkness.

“I think it’s time I met my daughter.””

Every person in the room froze.

My heart pounded so loudly I could barely hear anything else.

The power was still out.

The only light came from the street outside, spilling through the windows in thin gray lines.

Dad stepped in front of me.

Immediately.

Like his body moved before his mind could even think.

That was my father.

Even after everything.

Even after every secret.

Every document.

Every person who tried to tell me who I belonged to.

Dad still moved first to protect me.

“Stay behind me,” he whispered.

I grabbed his arm.

“Dad…”

“I’m here.””

Two words.

Simple.

But they meant everything.

The front door opened wider.

A man stepped inside.

Older than Marcus.

Older than Dad.

His hair was gray at the sides.

His suit was expensive.

His face looked calm.

Too calm.

He looked around the room like he owned it.

Then his eyes landed on me.

And he smiled.

Not a kind smile.

A satisfied one.

“So much like Lucy.””

My skin crawled.

Dad’s voice was cold.

“Adrian Carter.””

The man smiled.

“Daniel.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus moved forward.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

Adrian looked at him.

“You always were dramatic, Marcus.””

The way he said the name told me everything.

They knew each other.

Not casually.

Personally.

“You lied to her,” Marcus said.

Adrian laughed.

“I protected what was mine.””

My stomach dropped.

Mine.

That word.

Like I was an object.

Dad noticed too.

“You don’t get to say that.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Actually, Daniel, I do.””

“No.””

Dad stepped closer.

“You walked into my home.””

Adrian smiled.

“Your home?””

He looked around.

“Interesting choice of words.””

Dad’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian reached into his coat.

Vanessa immediately stepped back.

“No.””

Everyone looked at her.

Because that was the first time she sounded genuinely terrified.

Adrian noticed.

“Still afraid, Vanessa?””

She said nothing.

Dad looked between them.

“What is going on?””

Adrian pulled out a folder.

“I think everyone deserves the truth.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Not your version.””

Adrian ignored him.

He placed the folder on the table.

Inside were old documents.

Birth records.

Legal papers.

Photographs.

More pieces of my life.

More things other people had collected while I was just trying to be a normal kid.

Adrian looked at me.

“Maya, I know this is confusing.””

I almost laughed.

Confusing?

My entire identity had become a mystery.

But I didn’t laugh.

I just stared.

“You don’t know anything about me.””

His smile faded slightly.

“That’s because people kept me away from you.””

“People?””

He looked at Marcus.

“Your father.””

Marcus’s face hardened.

“You don’t get to use that word.””

Adrian ignored him.

“Lucy made a mistake.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Careful.””

Adrian looked at him.

“She chose lies over family.””

My father’s expression changed.

“No.””

His voice was low.

“She chose her daughter.””

For a moment, Adrian had no answer.

And I noticed it.

A small crack.

Because Dad had said the one thing nobody could argue with.

My mother chose me.

Adrian opened the folder.

“Lucy believed she could hide Maya forever.””

He pulled out a document.

“She was wrong.””

Dad looked at it.

“What is that?””

“A custody agreement.””

My heart stopped.

“No.””

Adrian looked at me.

“You see, Maya, your mother knew I had rights.””

Dad grabbed the paper.

“This is fake.””

Adrian smiled.

“Is it?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“I know what you did.””

Adrian looked at him.

“Do you?””

“You manipulated records.””

“I corrected records.””

“You threatened Lucy.””

“I warned her.””

Dad’s hands tightened.

“You threatened my wife?””

Adrian’s face remained calm.

“She was keeping my daughter from me.””

The word hit the room.

My daughter.

Again.

Like a claim.

Like ownership.

I finally spoke.

“Why?””

Everyone looked at me.

Adrian turned.

“Why what?””

“Why do you want me?””

The question surprised him.

He stared.

Then answered:

“Because you are my blood.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

His expression changed.

“What?””

“Blood doesn’t make someone a father.””

Silence.

Even Dad looked surprised.

I continued.

“My father was there.””

I pointed at Daniel.

“He raised me.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“That man lied to you.””

“No.””

My voice became stronger.

“You all lied to me.””

I looked around the room.

“But he loved me.””

Dad’s eyes filled with emotion.

Adrian looked annoyed.

Not hurt.

Annoyed.

That told me everything.

He didn’t want a daughter.

He wanted something.

A connection.

A claim.

A victory.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“I need to tell the truth.””

Everyone turned.

Adrian looked at her.

“No.””

She ignored him.

For the first time, Vanessa looked tired.

Not elegant.

Not controlled.

Just tired.

“I met Adrian before I met Daniel.””

Dad closed his eyes.

Like he already knew.

Vanessa continued.

“He approached me because he knew I could get close to Daniel.””

My heart sank.

“You used him.””

She looked at Dad.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than a lie.

Dad looked away.

“I didn’t start out wanting to hurt you.””

“But you did.””

She nodded.

“I know.””

Adrian interrupted.

“She’s emotional. Don’t listen to her.””

Vanessa looked at him.

And something changed.

Fear disappeared.

“You ruined everything.””

Adrian’s expression darkened.

“Be careful.””

“No.””

She stepped forward.

“You promised me I would be protected.””

Everyone went silent.

Dad looked at her.

“Protected from what?””

Vanessa looked at him.

“From him.””

She pointed at Adrian.

The room changed.

Because suddenly the person who had hurt us was also someone who had been controlled.

Adrian laughed.

“You think they’ll forgive you?””

“No.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I don’t deserve forgiveness.””

That surprised me.

She looked back at Dad.

“But they deserve the truth.””

She took a deep breath.

“I helped Adrian because he threatened me.””

Dad stared.

“What did he threaten?””

Vanessa looked down.

“He knew about my past.””

Nobody spoke.

“He knew things I didn’t want exposed.””

Adrian smiled.

“Still making excuses.””

Vanessa ignored him.

“But then I found out the real plan.””

“What plan?”” Dad asked.

Her eyes moved to me.

“He never wanted custody.””

A chill went through me.

“Then what did he want?””

Vanessa whispered:

“He wanted Maya’s inheritance.””

Nobody moved.

My confusion grew.

“What inheritance?””

Adrian’s face changed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

Dad saw it.

“What inheritance?””

Vanessa continued.

“Lucy left something behind.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

“I knew it.””

Dad looked at him.

“You knew?””

“Not everything.””

Vanessa said:

“Lucy discovered Adrian had been stealing from the Carter family trust.””

Dad froze.

“My family trust?””

“Yes.””

Adrian stepped forward.

“Enough.””

But nobody listened.

Vanessa continued.

“She hid the evidence.””

My heart raced.

“Where?””

She looked at me.

“In the one place Adrian would never look.””

Dad stared.

“Where?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“She put it with Maya.””

Everyone went silent.

I looked down at myself.

“With me?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your mother left something for you.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“What?””

Vanessa took a step closer.

“A necklace.””

My hand immediately moved to my neck.

The necklace.

The one my mother left me.

The one I had worn since I was little.

My fingers touched the small pendant.

Adrian’s expression changed.

And for the first time…

He looked afraid.

Dad noticed.

“Maya.””

He looked at the necklace.

“Take it off.””

I slowly removed it.

My hands trembled.

The small pendant looked ordinary.

But Adrian stared at it like it was a weapon.

Marcus whispered:

“Lucy hid the evidence inside.””

Adrian suddenly moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

He reached toward me.

Dad grabbed my shoulder and pulled me back.

“Don’t touch her.””

Adrian stopped.

And then he smiled.

A cold, terrifying smile.

“Too late.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Adrian looked at the necklace.

Then at me.

“Because Maya…”

He paused.

“The evidence was never the only thing your mother hid.””

The room went silent.

Then he said:

“She hid the truth about who you really are.””

The pendant suddenly cracked in my hand.

Something tiny fell onto the floor.

A hidden compartment.

Inside was a small memory card.

And a handwritten note.

Dad picked it up.

The handwriting was my mother’s.

Only three words were written.

*“Watch this alone.””*

And beneath it…

A name.

Not Adrian.

Not Marcus.

Not Daniel.

May you like

A name nobody expected.

*Vanessa.*
