Chapter 8: The Brother My Mother Tried To Hide
The message stayed on my father’s phone screen.
*Tell her the truth before I do.*
And underneath it:
*Lucy Carter’s brother.*
My mother’s brother.
Someone I had never heard of.
Someone who apparently knew secrets about me that my own father didn’t know.
Dad stared at the screen.
His face had gone completely still.
That scared me more than anger.
Because my father was never quiet when he was upset.
He fixed things.
He confronted things.
He fought.
But now he looked like a man realizing the fight had started years before he even knew there was a war.
“Who is it?”” Marcus asked.
Dad didn’t answer.
“Daniel.””
He slowly looked up.
“My brother-in-law.””
The words sounded strange.
Like he couldn’t believe them himself.
“Your wife’s brother?”” Marcus asked.
Dad nodded.
“Thomas.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
“You know him?””
Dad looked at her.
“Yes.””
That surprised me.
“You know him too?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I met him.””
My heart sank.
Of course she had.
Everyone seemed to know each other except me.
“How does everyone know things about my life except me?””
My voice cracked.
Nobody answered.
And that hurt more than anything.
Because I was tired of being the last person to learn the truth about myself.
Dad sat down.
He rubbed his hands over his face.
“I need to tell you what I know.””
I looked at him.
“Finally.””
The word came out harsher than I intended.
Dad looked hurt.
But he didn’t argue.
“You’re right.””
He took a breath.
“When your mother and I got married, she had already lost contact with her brother.””
“Why?””
“Because they fought.””
“About what?””
Dad looked toward the window.
“About Marcus.””
Everyone became silent.
My eyes moved to Marcus.
“What does he have to do with my mother and her brother?””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“I knew Thomas.””
“You knew him?””
He nodded.
“A long time ago.””
Dad looked at him.
“Why didn’t you tell me that?””
“Because I didn’t know how deep this went.””
That answer didn’t satisfy anyone.
Dad stood.
“No more secrets.””
His voice was firm.
“No more half-truths.””
He looked at every person in the room.
“Everyone talks about protecting Maya.””
He pointed toward me.
“But nobody asks what she needs.””
I swallowed.
Because he was right.
I didn’t need another person deciding what truth I could handle.
I needed the truth.
All of it.
Dad called Thomas.
Nobody spoke while the phone rang.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Then someone answered.
A man’s voice.
“Daniel.””
Dad closed his eyes.
“You knew I’d call.””
“Yes.””
“You sent the message.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because Maya deserves to know before they turn her against the truth.””
My heart tightened.
“Who is ‘they’?””
The voice became quieter.
“Everyone who benefited from keeping her confused.””
Dad gripped the phone.
“Thomas, you have five minutes.””
Another pause.
Then:
“Put me on speaker.””
Dad did.
A man’s voice filled the room.
Older.
Tired.
But calm.
“Maya?””
I froze.
He knew my name.
“Who are you?””
A long silence followed.
“I’m your uncle.””
I didn’t know what I expected.
Maybe anger.
Maybe accusations.
But hearing someone claim to be family made my chest ache.
“Why have I never met you?””
Thomas sighed.
“Because your mother didn’t want you to.””
“Why?””
“Because she was afraid.””
“Of what?””
The line went quiet.
Then:
“Of me.””
Everyone looked surprised.
Even Dad.
“What?””
Thomas continued.
“Lucy believed I was dangerous.””
My heart sank.
“Were you?””
Another pause.
“Yes.””
The honesty shocked me.
“I made mistakes.””
Dad stepped closer.
“What mistakes?””
Thomas’s voice became heavier.
“Maya, your mother found out something about your birth.””
Marcus looked down.
Dad looked at him.
“About Marcus?””
“Yes.””
“And?””
Thomas continued.
“Lucy discovered that Marcus wasn’t the only person who knew about Maya.””
My stomach tightened.
“Who else?””
Thomas answered:
“Your biological father.””
Silence.
Dad looked confused.
“Marcus said he was Maya’s father.””
Thomas didn’t answer.
And that silence was terrifying.
“Thomas.””
The voice on the phone softened.
“Daniel, you need to understand something.””
“What?””
“Lucy never told you because she was trying to protect you.””
“Protect me from what?””
“From the truth about Maya’s father.””
I looked at Marcus.
His face was unreadable.
“Marcus,” I said.
He looked at me.
“Are you my father?””
The room froze.
Everyone waited.
Marcus took a breath.
Then he said:
“Yes.””
The answer came quickly.
Too quickly.
My heart sank.
“Then why does my uncle say there’s someone else?””
Marcus looked away.
And that was when I knew.
There was more.
“There is another person involved,” Marcus said.
Dad’s face hardened.
“What person?””
Thomas answered through the phone.
“The man who caused all of this.””
A few minutes later, we were sitting around the living room table.
The same table where we had eaten birthday cake.
The same table where I had opened presents.
Now it was covered with documents.
Old photographs.
Names.
Dates.
My entire life reduced to pieces of paper.
Thomas spoke through the phone.
“Lucy became pregnant during a difficult time.””
Dad looked at me.
“I knew she was pregnant before we married.””
Thomas continued.
“But she never told Daniel everything.””
“Why?””
“Because she believed the truth would put Maya in danger.””
My fingers tightened.
“Why would knowing my father put me in danger?””
Nobody answered.
Then Thomas said:
“Because your father was not a good man.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked down.
Dad looked at him.
“You mean Marcus?””
Thomas sighed.
“No.””
Everyone froze.
“Then who?””
Thomas answered:
“Adrian Carter.””
My breath stopped.
The name sounded familiar.
Dad looked shocked.
“Carter?””
Thomas continued.
“He was your father’s cousin.””
Dad’s eyes widened.
“What?””
I looked between them.
“I don’t understand.””
Thomas explained.
“Adrian was obsessed with power. Money. Control.””
Dad slowly sat down.
“He was involved with the company?””
“Yes.””
“Years ago?””
“Yes.””
Marcus spoke quietly.
“Before I disappeared, Adrian tried to use me.””
Dad looked at him.
“How?””
Marcus hesitated.
“He knew Lucy and I were together.””
“And?””
“He threatened her.””
My heart hurt.
“My mother?””
Marcus nodded.
“He told her if she didn’t leave me, he would expose certain things.””
“What things?””
Nobody answered.
Then Thomas said:
“The Carter family had secrets.””
Dad looked angry.
“I’m a Carter.””
“I know.””
“And you’re telling me my own family tried to hurt my daughter?””
Thomas’s voice was quiet.
“Yes.””
The next hour changed everything.
Thomas explained that after my mother died, Adrian believed the secret died with her.
But years later, when Daniel’s company grew, old connections resurfaced.
Adrian wanted control.
Greg helped him.
Vanessa became the doorway into our family.
And Maya…
I was the final piece.
“Why me?”” I asked.
Thomas answered carefully.
“Because you are the one person who connects everyone.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“Your existence threatens Adrian.””
Marcus looked at me.
“You’re proof.””
“Proof of what?””
That was when Thomas said something I would never forget.
“Proof that Adrian Carter’s biggest lie was never about money.””
Dad looked confused.
“What lie?””
Thomas took a breath.
“He told everyone that Lucy’s baby died.””
The room went silent.
I couldn’t move.
“What?””
Thomas continued.
“He told the family there was no child.””
Dad looked at me.
“But Lucy was alive.””
“Yes.””
“And Maya…”
“Yes.””
Thomas’s voice cracked.
“Maya was the secret Lucy protected until her last breath.””
I felt tears fall.
My mother hadn’t hidden me because she didn’t love me.
She had hidden me because she did.
Then Dad’s phone buzzed again.
Another message.
This time from Adrian.
A photograph appeared.
It showed my mother.
Holding me.
Standing beside a man.
Not Marcus.
Not Daniel.
A stranger.
On the back of the photo was a handwritten sentence.
*“Lucy, you can hide the child from me, but you cannot erase what belongs to me.””*
Dad stared at the image.
Then whispered:
“Adrian found her.””
Marcus stood immediately.
“What?””
Dad looked up.
“He knows.””
The lights suddenly went out.
The entire house went dark.
Then came a sound from the front door.
A key turning.
Everyone froze.
Because someone was opening the door.
Someone who had a key.
Someone who should not have been able to enter.
A man’s voice echoed through the darkness.
“Daniel.””
A pause.
May you like
Then:
“I think it’s time I met my daughter.””
