Chapter 4: The Secret My Mother Took To Her Grave
For a moment, nobody moved.
Not me.
Not my father.
Not Vanessa.
The words she had just spoken sat between us like a weapon.
*“The person who signed the test results was your first wife.””*
My mother.
The woman I barely remembered.
The woman whose photographs were still hanging upstairs.
The woman my father still talked about when he thought I wasn’t listening.
My mother had signed something saying I wasn’t his daughter?
I looked at Dad.
I expected anger.
I expected him to shout.
Instead, he looked broken.
“Where did you get that?”” he asked.
His voice was quiet.
Too quiet.
Vanessa slowly walked closer.
“I told you there were things you didn’t know.””
Dad stared at the envelope.
“Where did you get it?””
She sighed.
“Daniel, I didn’t want it to come to this.””
“No.””
His voice became sharper.
“Answer me.””
Vanessa stopped.
For the first time, she looked nervous.
“I found it among your old documents.””
“My old documents?””
“Yes.””
“That’s impossible.””
“Why?””
“Because my personal files are locked.””
Vanessa didn’t respond.
And that silence said everything.
Dad’s face changed.
“You went through my things.””
“I was trying to protect our family.””
“No.””
He shook his head.
“You were searching for something.””
Vanessa’s expression hardened.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked at me.
And that was when I knew.
She didn’t want to explain.
She wanted to control the story.
“Maya,” she said softly, “I never wanted you to hear this this way.””
I stepped back.
“Don’t.””
Her eyes narrowed slightly.
“Don’t what?””
“Don’t pretend you care.””
The room became silent.
I had never spoken to Vanessa like that before.
Maybe because I had always been afraid.
But fear changes when you realize someone has already hurt you.
Vanessa stared at me.
Then she looked at Daniel.
“She’s angry because she doesn’t understand.””
Dad stepped between us.
“Stop talking about her like she isn’t standing here.””
Vanessa looked hurt.
But I noticed something.
It disappeared quickly.
Like she turned it off.
“I’m trying to save you from a lie.””
Dad grabbed the envelope from the table.
“You expect me to believe this?””
“I expect you to read it.””
He looked down.
His hands were shaking.
But before he could open it, his phone rang.
Marcus.
Dad answered immediately.
“Marcus, Vanessa is here.””
A pause.
Then Dad’s face changed.
“What?””
I watched him listen.
His eyes moved toward the envelope.
“No. That doesn’t make sense.””
Another pause.
Then:
“Are you sure?””
My heart started racing.
“What did he say?”” I whispered.
Dad held up a finger.
“Okay. Send it now.””
He ended the call.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You see?””
Dad looked at her.
“See what?””
“That even your lawyer knows there’s a problem.””
Dad ignored her.
He looked at me.
“Maya, go upstairs.””
I froze.
“What?””
“Please.””
“But—”
“Go upstairs.””
I knew that voice.
It was the voice he used when something serious was happening.
I didn’t argue.
But I didn’t leave immediately either.
Because I wanted to know the truth.
And because deep down, I was terrified the truth would change everything.
I sat on my bedroom floor for almost twenty minutes.
The house felt strange.
Like it belonged to someone else.
The walls were covered with memories.
Pictures of me as a baby.
Pictures of Dad holding me.
Pictures of my mother smiling beside us.
I picked up one framed photo from my nightstand.
It was the three of us.
A family before everything changed.
My mother looked happy.
Dad looked younger.
And I looked tiny.
Too small to understand anything.
I touched the glass.
“Mom…”
My voice cracked.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
I knew she couldn’t answer.
She had been gone for years.
But suddenly, every memory felt like a question.
A knock came at the door.
I quickly wiped my face.
“Come in.””
Dad stepped inside.
He looked exhausted.
Not angry.
Not confused.
Just tired.
He sat beside me on the floor.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
Then he said:
“Marcus found something.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
Dad looked down.
“The DNA report Vanessa has…”
He paused.
“It’s real.””
The room spun.
I stared at him.
“What?””
He quickly grabbed my hand.
“But listen to me.””
I couldn’t speak.
“The report is real,” he repeated.
My eyes filled with tears.
“Then…”
I couldn’t finish.
Dad’s expression broke.
“Maya.””
“Then I’m not your daughter?””
He immediately pulled me into his arms.
“No.””
His voice was firm.
“No. That is not what this means.””
“But Vanessa said—”
“Vanessa said a lot of things.””
He held me tighter.
“Maya, the report is real. But the story behind it isn’t.””
I looked up.
“What does that mean?””
Dad took a deep breath.
“Marcus discovered something about the test.””
“What?””
“It wasn’t a normal DNA test.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He checked the laboratory information.””
Dad swallowed.
“The sample was submitted under your mother’s name.””
I didn’t understand.
“So?””
“So your mother did take a DNA test.””
“Why?””
Dad looked away.
And that scared me.
“Dad?””
He rubbed his hands together.
“Because someone told her she needed to prove something.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“Vanessa?””
Dad nodded slowly.
“But Vanessa wasn’t part of our lives then.””
“Exactly.””
The silence was heavy.
“How could she know?””
That was the question.
The question nobody had an answer for.
Downstairs, Vanessa was waiting.
When Dad returned, she stood immediately.
“So?””
Dad looked at her.
“You knew about the DNA test before today.””
She blinked.
“What?””
“You heard me.””
“That’s ridiculous.””
“No.””
His voice was cold.
“You knew.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I found the report.””
“Where?””
“In your files.””
“Why were you looking through my files?””
“I told you.””
“No.””
Dad stepped closer.
“You said you were protecting our family.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“You’re accusing me?””
“I’m asking questions.””
“No, Daniel. You’re blaming me because you don’t want to accept the truth.””
Dad looked at the envelope.
“Who told you about the test?””
Vanessa stayed silent.
That silence was louder than anything.
Then Dad asked:
“Was it Greg?””
Her expression changed.
Only slightly.
But enough.
Dad noticed.
“Vanessa.””
She looked away.
“You don’t understand what happened.””
“What happened?””
“You weren’t supposed to find out this way.””
The words shocked him.
“Find out what way?””
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
Toward my room.
Then back at him.
“The truth.””
Dad’s voice dropped.
“What truth?””
She walked to the table and placed another document beside the DNA report.
“This.””
Dad picked it up.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
“What is this?””
Vanessa smiled sadly.
Not the fake smile from before.
Something colder.
“This is the reason I did everything.””
Dad looked at the paper.
“What is it?””
“A confession.””
My heart pounded from upstairs.
I couldn’t see them.
But I could hear every word.
Dad’s voice became confused.
“Whose confession?””
Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.
Then she said:
“Your wife’s.””
I stepped closer to my bedroom door.
My breath caught.
“My mother?””
“Yes.””
Dad looked stunned.
“What does it say?””
Vanessa leaned back.
“She admitted she had a secret before she died.””
The room went quiet.
Then Dad asked:
“What secret?””
Vanessa looked toward the stairs.
Like she knew I was listening.
And then she said:
“She wrote that Maya’s real father is still alive.””
My hand covered my mouth.
I couldn’t breathe.
Dad whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
Vanessa pushed the document toward him.
“Read it.””
He unfolded the paper.
A few seconds passed.
Then I heard something fall.
The sound of paper hitting the floor.
Dad’s voice broke.
“No…”
I slowly opened my bedroom door.
Just enough to see.
My father was standing there holding a handwritten letter.
His face was completely pale.
Vanessa was watching him.
Waiting.
And then my father looked up.
His eyes found mine.
The pain in his face scared me more than anything.
Because I knew.
Whatever was written in that letter…
Was about me.
And then Dad whispered:
“Maya…”
He looked at the page again.
“Your mother knew who your biological father was.””
A cold silence filled the house.
Then he read the final line aloud.
May you like
The line that changed everything.
*“Daniel, if you are reading this, it means the man who fathered Maya has finally come back.””*
