Chapter 4: The Man Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Nobody breathed.

That was the only way I could describe it.

The ballroom wasn’t silent anymore.

It was frozen.

Marcus stood beneath the chandelier lights holding a photograph that had turned our entire world upside down.

Adrian Cole.

Alive.

Standing outside Cross Legacy Holdings.

Watching.

My knees felt weak.

Because six years ago, I watched police officers search the building where Adrian had disappeared.

I watched investigators carry boxes out of our office.

I watched news reports call him a fugitive.

And then I watched my own life collapse around a lie.

But now he was standing in front of me again.

Not in memory.

Not in a nightmare.

Alive.

Marcus looked at the photograph again.

Then at me.

“Nia.””

His voice was different.

Lower.

More careful.

“Tell me what I’m looking at.””

I opened my mouth.

Nothing came out.

Because there were too many answers.

And none of them were simple.

“I don’t know.””

The moment I said it, I saw Vanessa smile.

A tiny movement.

Almost invisible.

But I saw it.

She wanted Marcus to hear those words.

She wanted them to sound like guilt.

Not confusion.

“You don’t know?”” Vanessa repeated.

I turned toward her.

“Don’t do this.””

“Do what?””

“Pretend you’re shocked.””

She laughed softly.

“I’m not pretending anything.””

Marcus stepped between us.

“Enough.””

The authority in his voice silenced everyone.

He looked at Vanessa.

“You knew Adrian was alive.””

It wasn’t a question.

Vanessa’s expression shifted.

Only slightly.

But everyone noticed.

“I suspected.””

Marcus stared at her.

“You suspected?””

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Vanessa looked away.

That was the first time all night she didn’t have an immediate answer.

And that scared me more than her accusations.

Because Vanessa Cross always had an answer.

She always had a story.

She always had a way to make herself the smartest person in the room.

But now?

She looked cornered.

“I was trying to protect this family,” she finally said.

Marcus’s face hardened.

“By humiliating my wife?””

“By exposing the truth.””

“No.””

His voice became colder.

“By creating a public disaster.””

The guests watched silently.

The same people who had seen Vanessa tear my dress apart were now watching her lose control.

She pointed at me.

“She lied to you.””

Marcus didn’t respond.

“She built an entire identity around hiding who she was.””

Still nothing.

“She was engaged to a criminal.””

Marcus looked at me.

The words hurt.

Not because they were completely true.

Because they were incomplete.

“I was engaged to someone who betrayed me,” I said.

Vanessa shook her head.

“That’s what he made you believe.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

She looked at the sealed envelope again.

Then at Marcus.

“Maybe you should let her hear the rest.””

Marcus turned.

“What rest?””

Vanessa smiled.

“Ask her what happened the night Adrian disappeared.””

The room changed again.

Everyone felt it.

Because that was the first time Vanessa had mentioned something specific.

Not rumors.

Not accusations.

A night.

A moment.

A memory.

Marcus looked at me.

“Nia?””

I looked down.

I hated that I was back there.

Six years earlier.

A rainy night.

A phone call.

A door closing.

A man promising he would fix everything.

And then vanishing.

“I told you Adrian disappeared,” I said.

Marcus nodded.

“You did.””

“He called me that night.””

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“What did he say?””

I ignored her.

“He said he had found proof that someone was stealing money from our organization.””

Marcus listened carefully.

“And?””

“He told me not to trust anyone.””

The ballroom remained quiet.

“He said he would meet me the next morning.””

I swallowed.

“But he never came.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Because you went to meet him that night.””

My heart stopped.

Marcus looked at me.

“Did you?””

I closed my eyes.

“Yes.””

A whisper moved through the crowd.

I continued before anyone could interrupt.

“I went to his apartment.””

“Why didn’t you tell me that?”” Marcus asked.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“Again?””

The word wasn’t angry.

It was wounded.

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

He looked away.

That hurt.

“I thought I could fix it myself.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You always think you can save everyone.””

I turned toward her.

“And you always think destroying people makes you powerful.””

Her smile faded.

For the first time, she had no response.

Marcus looked at me.

“What happened at the apartment?””

I remembered the rain hitting the windows.

The broken glass on the floor.

The open drawers.

The missing laptop.

Adrian standing in the middle of the room with a look I had never seen before.

Fear.

“He wasn’t alone.””

Marcus’s eyes narrowed.

“Who was with him?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

Vanessa suddenly looked nervous.

A small detail.

But I caught it.

“You know something,” I said.

She looked at me.

“No.””

“Yes.””

My voice grew stronger.

“You know something about that night.””

Marcus noticed too.

“Vanessa.””

She looked at her brother.

“I was trying to find answers.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She looked uncomfortable.

And that was the first crack.

The first real crack.

“I followed Adrian.””

Everyone reacted.

Marcus stared.

“You followed him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because I knew he was hiding something.””

I almost laughed.

“You knew?””

“Yes.””

She stepped closer.

“Because Adrian came to me before he disappeared.””

The words hit me.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

“What?””

Marcus turned.

“What did you just say?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“He came to me.””

“When?””

“The week before he vanished.””

My hands went cold.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

She didn’t answer.

And that silence was enough.

Marcus’s voice dropped.

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

Vanessa looked angry now.

Defensive.

“Because he gave me information.””

“What information?””

She looked at the guests.

Then at the cameras.

Like she suddenly remembered she had an audience.

“He told me Nia wasn’t innocent.””

My heart stopped.

Marcus looked at me.

Vanessa continued.

“He told me she was involved.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“He said she knew where the money went.””

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

Her question cut deeper than the accusation.

Because Adrian had betrayed me before.

He had lied.

He had disappeared.

And somewhere deep inside, a small part of me had always wondered why.

Marcus looked between us.

“I need the truth.””

I stared at him.

“You have it.””

“Do I?””

The question broke something inside me.

Because I realized what Vanessa had accomplished.

She didn’t need to prove I was guilty.

She only needed to make Marcus doubt.

And doubt was more dangerous than any lie.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Marcus, we need to leave. We need to review all these documents privately.””

Marcus nodded slowly.

But before he could move, Vanessa spoke.

“One more thing.””

Nobody wanted to hear it.

But everyone did.

She walked toward the table.

She picked up the original fraud file.

Then she opened it to the last page.

“I didn’t create this.””

Marcus looked at her.

“What?””

Vanessa turned the page around.

There was a signature at the bottom.

A signature Marcus recognized.

Because it belonged to someone he trusted.

Someone who had access to everything.

The signature belonged to his company’s chief financial officer.

Marcus stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa smiled.

“No.””

She looked at me.

“That’s the part nobody wants to admit.””

Marcus grabbed the document.

His face changed as he read.

Because the signature wasn’t the only thing there.

There was a handwritten note attached.

Three words.

Three words that made the entire room go silent.

Marcus read them aloud.

“Ask your wife.””

My heart stopped.

Because beneath the message was a date.

The date of my wedding.

And below that date was another name.

A name I had not seen in six years.

Adrian Cole.

Marcus looked at me.

And this time, he didn’t ask a question.

May you like

He whispered:

“Why was Adrian at our wedding?””
