Chapter 6: The Return of Adrian Cole
The ballroom doors opened slowly.
Too slowly.
Every person inside turned toward the entrance.
The security guard stepped aside.
And for a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
Because standing there was the man who had haunted every nightmare I had tried to forget.
Adrian Cole.
Alive.
Older.
Different.
But unmistakably him.
The room erupted.
Guests stepped backward.
Phones lifted.
Whispers spread like fire.
“That’s him.””
“Isn’t he dead?””
“Wasn’t he wanted?””
I couldn’t move.
My body remembered him before my mind could accept him.
The way he stood.
The way he looked around a room.
The way his eyes always searched for danger before anything else.
Six years disappeared in a single second.
I was twenty-eight again.
Standing in that abandoned office.
Watching the man I loved look at me like he had already said goodbye.
But this time, he wasn’t leaving.
This time, he was walking toward me.
Marcus moved immediately.
Two security officers stepped in front of me.
Adrian stopped several feet away.
His eyes moved from Marcus to me.
Then to the torn blue dress.
His expression changed.
“Nia.””
Hearing my name from his mouth felt wrong.
Like someone had opened a locked door inside my memory.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Do not come any closer.””
Adrian looked at him.
“You’re Marcus Cross.””
The fact that he knew his name made everyone tense.
Marcus’s voice hardened.
“How do you know me?””
Adrian looked at me.
“Because I’ve been watching.””
The room went silent.
My stomach dropped.
Watching.
The word felt heavier than an accusation.
Marcus heard it too.
“You’ve been watching my wife?””
Adrian didn’t answer immediately.
That silence was enough.
Marcus’s anger rose.
“Answer me.””
Adrian finally looked at him.
“Yes.””
A wave of shock moved through the ballroom.
I looked at Adrian.
“Why?””
He looked back at me.
And for the first time, I saw something I never expected.
Regret.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“Protect me?””
My voice shook.
“You disappeared.””
Adrian lowered his eyes.
“I know.””
“You let everyone think I was responsible.””
“I know.””
“You let me lose everything.””
His jaw tightened.
“I know.””
I stepped forward.
“Do you know what that felt like?””
The room disappeared again.
All I saw was him.
“The police questioned me. Investors sued me. People called me a criminal.””
My voice cracked.
“And you were alive.””
Adrian looked away.
“I didn’t have a choice.””
Those words.
Those four words.
They made something inside me break.
Everyone who hurts you always says the same thing.
I had no choice.
I had to.
I needed to.
I was protecting you.
But they never think about what happens to the person they leave behind.
Marcus looked between us.
“What exactly happened six years ago?””
Adrian looked at him.
“It’s bigger than Nia.””
Marcus didn’t blink.
“Everything tonight has involved my family, my company, and my wife. Start explaining.””
Adrian nodded slowly.
“You deserve the truth.””
Vanessa suddenly laughed.
Everyone turned.
“Interesting.””
Her voice was sharp.
“You show up after six years and suddenly you’re the hero?””
Adrian looked at her.
“No.””
His expression changed.
“I’m the person who knows what you did.””
Vanessa froze.
Only for a second.
But it happened.
Marcus noticed.
“So you two know each other.””
Adrian looked at Vanessa.
“She knows exactly who I am.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I met him once.””
“Three times.””
Her expression tightened.
“You’re lying.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“You met me before I disappeared.””
Nobody spoke.
He continued.
“You offered me a deal.””
My eyes moved to Vanessa.
“What deal?””
Vanessa looked at Adrian.
“You have no proof.””
Adrian smiled sadly.
“I knew you would say that.””
He reached inside his jacket.
Security immediately tensed.
Adrian slowly pulled out a small device.
“A recording.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Marcus looked at him.
“What recording?””
“The one I made the night before I disappeared.””
He handed it to Daniel.
The attorney connected it to a nearby screen.
The ballroom lights dimmed slightly.
A recording began.
At first, there was only static.
Then a voice.
Vanessa’s voice.
Everyone recognized it.
Because she was standing right there.
The recording played.
“You’re smarter than most people, Adrian.””
The younger Vanessa’s voice sounded colder.
More confident.
“You know what happens if Marcus finds out?””
A younger Adrian responded.
“What happens?””
“You go to prison.””
My heart tightened.
The recording continued.
“You can either take the blame and disappear, or we make sure Nia takes it with you.””
I felt the blood leave my face.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
The room was completely silent.
The recording continued.
“She’s innocent,” Adrian said.
Vanessa laughed.
“Does that matter?””
Nobody moved.
“She’s just someone Marcus married. People like us don’t lose sleep over people like her.””
The audio stopped.
No one spoke.
Not even Vanessa.
Marcus slowly turned toward his sister.
“What was that?””
Vanessa looked stunned.
“I don’t know.””
Nobody believed her.
Adrian looked at Marcus.
“She was moving money through fake companies connected to Cross Legacy.””
Daniel immediately looked at the audit folder.
“The fraud records.””
Adrian nodded.
“She needed someone to blame.””
His eyes moved to me.
“And I was the easiest target.””
I stared at him.
“Why didn’t you come back?””
His face changed.
Because that question mattered more than everything else.
“I tried.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
“I did.””
“Then why didn’t I know?””
He looked down.
“Because every time I got close, someone stopped me.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who?””
Adrian looked at him.
“Your father.””
The room went silent.
Again.
But this time, Marcus reacted differently.
Anger.
Pure anger.
“My father died.””
“I know.””
“Then explain.””
Adrian looked at the screen.
“The man in that video wasn’t just your father’s attorney.””
He paused.
“He was working for him.””
Marcus stared.
“That’s impossible.””
“No.””
Adrian shook his head.
“That’s exactly why it worked.””
He took a breath.
“Your father built an empire. But before he died, he discovered someone inside the company was stealing from him.””
Marcus looked at the floor.
“Who?””
Adrian’s eyes moved toward Vanessa.
Nobody needed the answer.
Because everyone understood.
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“You’re lying.””
Adrian ignored her.
“Your father planned to expose her.””
Marcus whispered:
“My father knew?””
“Yes.””
“And he did nothing?””
Adrian’s expression darkened.
“He tried.””
A silence followed.
Then Adrian said something that changed everything.
“He was killed before he could.””
Marcus froze.
The ballroom erupted.
“Killed?””
“Are you saying his death wasn’t an accident?””
Adrian looked at Marcus.
“No.””
My heart raced.
Because this was no longer about a ruined marriage.
Or a family betrayal.
Or a stolen fortune.
This was about a secret that had been buried for years.
Marcus looked at his sister.
“Vanessa.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“You knew.””
“No.””
“You knew my father was investigating you.””
Her eyes filled with anger.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
She looked around the room.
At the guests.
The cameras.
The attorneys.
And finally at me.
Then she smiled.
But it wasn’t confidence.
It was desperation.
“You really want the truth?””
Marcus didn’t answer.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Fine.””
She pointed at Adrian.
“He’s telling you half the story.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“What?””
Vanessa looked directly at me.
“He didn’t disappear because he was protecting Nia.””
My heart stopped.
She continued.
“He disappeared because he was protecting himself.””
Adrian went silent.
Marcus looked at him.
“Is that true?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
And that scared me.
Because for the first time all night…
Adrian looked afraid.
Vanessa smiled.
“Ask him where he was the night your father died.””
The room went cold.
Marcus turned toward Adrian.
“Where were you?””
Adrian stared at him.
Then at me.
And quietly said:
“I was there.””
Before anyone could react, the lights suddenly went out.
The ballroom fell into darkness.
A scream came from the crowd.
Then a single phone screen lit up near the stage.
A new message appeared on the giant display.
Not from Vanessa.
Not from Adrian.
From an unknown sender.
The message read:
*THEY ARE BOTH LYING.*
May you like
And underneath it was a second line.
*NIA KNOWS WHY.*
