Chapter 8: The Woman Behind the Empire
Nobody moved.
Not even Marcus.
For a man who had spent his entire life controlling rooms filled with powerful people, he looked completely powerless.
His mother stood twenty feet away from him.
Alive.
Calm.
Unbothered.
Like she had simply walked into a family dinner instead of a ballroom filled with people who believed she had been dead for a decade.
I watched Marcus stare at her.
The same man who had faced billion-dollar negotiations.
The same man who had looked Vanessa in the eyes while exposing her crimes.
Now looked like a child seeing a ghost.
“How?”” he whispered.
The woman smiled sadly.
“Hello, Marcus.””
He shook his head.
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“No, this isn’t possible.””
She took another step forward.
“I know this is difficult.””
“Difficult?””
The word came out louder than anything he had said all night.
“My mother died.””
The woman looked down.
“I know what you were told.””
Marcus stared at her.
“Who are you?””
The question sounded impossible.
Because he knew exactly who she was.
But his mind refused to accept it.
She looked at him with tired eyes.
“I’m your mother.””
The ballroom erupted.
Guests whispered.
Phones came out again.
Security moved closer.
But Marcus didn’t notice any of it.
His entire world had narrowed to one person.
A person who should not exist.
Vanessa looked terrified.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Terrified.
I noticed.
And so did Marcus.
He turned toward his sister.
“You knew.””
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
That was the answer.
Marcus’s expression changed.
“You knew my mother was alive.””
“Marcus—”
“No.””
His voice became cold.
“Don’t explain.””
Vanessa looked away.
“You don’t understand.””
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“I understand perfectly.””
His eyes moved between Vanessa and the woman.
“My sister knew my dead mother was alive.””
The woman spoke softly.
“Vanessa wasn’t the only one who knew.””
Everyone turned.
The woman looked at me.
My heart stopped.
“What?””
She walked toward the center of the ballroom.
Her eyes stayed on mine.
“Nia.””
I felt a chill.
“How do you know my name?””
She smiled faintly.
“Because I know everything that happened.””
Marcus immediately stepped between us.
“Stay away from her.””
The woman looked at him.
“You still protect people the same way your father did.””
The mention of his father changed his expression.
“My father.””
She nodded.
“He knew.””
Marcus froze.
“He knew you were alive?””
“Yes.””
The room went silent again.
“How long?””
“Years.””
The answer landed like a punch.
Marcus looked devastated.
“My entire life was a lie?””
The woman’s face softened.
“No.””
“Then what was it?””
She looked around the room.
“A carefully built story.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
She looked at him.
“My name is Evelyn Cross.””
A wave of shock moved through the guests.
Because the name carried weight.
Marcus’s mother.
The woman who built the foundation of the Cross family’s wealth.
The woman whose death had been considered the beginning of Marcus’s rise.
Evelyn looked at the documents on the table.
“The empire my husband built was never as clean as everyone believed.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Stop.””
She looked at him.
“You deserve the truth.””
“No.””
His voice was quieter.
“I deserve to know why my mother let me mourn her for ten years.””
Evelyn looked away.
For the first time, she looked human.
Not powerful.
Not mysterious.
Just hurt.
“Because I was trying to keep you alive.””
Nobody spoke.
Marcus laughed once.
A painful sound.
“Alive?””
“Yes.””
“From who?””
Evelyn looked at Vanessa.
Then at the people around her.
Then finally at me.
“From the people who are still in this room.””
Everyone became tense.
Security immediately scanned the crowd.
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“You?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
But her voice lacked confidence.
Evelyn continued.
“Vanessa was involved.””
Vanessa’s face turned pale.
“Don’t.””
The word came out almost like a warning.
Evelyn ignored her.
“She was young. Angry. She wanted power.””
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
“I made mistakes.””
Marcus stared.
“Mistakes?””
His voice shook.
“You helped destroy my wife.””
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“She destroyed us first!””
The entire ballroom went silent.
Marcus stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked at Evelyn.
Then at me.
“You want the truth?””
Nobody answered.
But everyone listened.
“Fine.””
She stepped forward.
“Nia wasn’t just connected to Adrian.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“Vanessa.””
“No.””
Her voice broke.
“No more secrets.””
She pointed toward me.
“Before she met you, she was already investigating Cross Legacy.””
Marcus looked at me.
I didn’t speak.
Because that part was true.
But not the way Vanessa wanted it to sound.
“I wasn’t investigating your family,” I said.
Vanessa laughed.
“You were.””
I looked at Marcus.
“I was investigating financial fraud.””
“And who did that fraud involve?””
Nobody answered.
Evelyn did.
“Your father.””
Marcus turned.
“What?””
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“Your father discovered money was being moved through fake companies.””
Daniel looked at the files.
“The same companies from the audit.””
“Yes.””
Marcus looked confused.
“But why would Nia be involved?””
I stepped forward.
“Because Adrian asked me to help.””
The words surprised everyone.
Marcus stared.
“You helped Adrian investigate my family?””
I swallowed.
“Not your family.””
“But my company.””
“Yes.””
The silence afterward was unbearable.
Marcus looked hurt.
Not because I had investigated.
Because I had hidden it.
“I trusted you.””
“I know.””
“And you knew something was wrong with my company?””
“I knew something was wrong with certain people inside it.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Because the answer was complicated.
Because I didn’t know who to trust.
Because every person connected to the truth had disappeared.
Because I had spent years afraid that telling Marcus would put him in danger.
“I tried.””
The words surprised him.
“What?””
“I tried to tell you.””
“When?””
“Six months after we met.””
Marcus frowned.
“I don’t remember.””
“Because someone interrupted.””
“Who?””
I looked toward Evelyn.
Everyone noticed.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Marcus stepped back.
“What?””
The room became painfully quiet.
“Your mother stopped me.””
Marcus stared at Evelyn.
“You knew?””
Evelyn nodded.
“I did.””
“Why?””
“Because if you knew the truth, they would have killed you.””
Marcus looked broken.
“You let me marry her without telling me?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“I watched Nia protect you.””
My eyes widened.
“What?””
She continued.
“She had proof that could have destroyed Cross Legacy.””
Marcus looked at me.
“And she didn’t use it.””
“No.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“She buried it.””
Vanessa looked furious.
“That’s impossible.””
Evelyn turned toward her.
“No.””
Her voice became cold.
“That is the difference between Nia and you.””
Vanessa looked away.
Marcus looked at me.
“What proof?””
I felt my heart race.
Because I knew exactly what she meant.
The one thing I had hidden.
The reason Adrian’s letter terrified me.
“I had a file.””
Marcus waited.
“Where is it?””
I hesitated.
That hesitation answered.
“Nia.””
I looked down.
“I destroyed it.””
The room reacted.
Marcus stared.
“You destroyed evidence?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because it wasn’t only about your family.””
I looked at Evelyn.
“It was about people who would have been hurt if it became public.””
Adrian finally spoke.
“She was protecting everyone.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You don’t get to defend her.””
Adrian accepted that.
“I know.””
Then Evelyn reached into her coat.
She pulled out a small black folder.
“I kept a copy.””
Marcus stared.
“What is that?””
“The original evidence.””
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
“Where did you get that?””
Evelyn looked at him.
“From the person who started all of this.””
Marcus took the folder.
His hands shook.
Before he opened it, Evelyn spoke.
“Inside is the truth about your father’s death.””
Marcus froze.
The room went silent.
He opened the folder.
The first page was a photograph.
A security image.
A date.
Ten years earlier.
And a person standing beside Marcus’s father the night he died.
Marcus looked at it.
Then his face changed.
Because the person in the photograph was someone he had trusted his entire life.
Someone still standing in the ballroom.
Someone who had been helping him uncover the truth.
Daniel noticed too.
His face went pale.
Marcus slowly raised his eyes.
And whispered:
“Daniel…”
The attorney froze.
Because the evidence wasn’t accusing him.
It was showing something much worse.
A second photograph was attached.
A photograph of Daniel meeting Vanessa.
Three days before my dress was torn apart.
Three days before the gala.
Three days before the truth came out.
Marcus looked around the room.
And everyone understood the same thing.
The person who had been exposing the secrets…
Had been hiding one of the biggest.
Daniel stepped backward.
“I can explain.””
Marcus stared at him.
“Then explain why you were helping her.””
Daniel said nothing.
And that silence revealed everything.
Then the lights flickered again.
A new message appeared on the giant screen.
This time there was no anonymous warning.
Only a single sentence:
*THE REAL BETRAYAL HAS ALWAYS BEEN INSIDE THE FAMILY.*
And below it appeared another name.
May you like
A name nobody expected.
*MARCUS CROSS.*
