Chapter 9: The Secret Marcus Never Knew
The name on the screen burned into everyone’s memory.
*MARCUS CROSS.*
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
The accusation was impossible.
After everything that had happened that night, after Vanessa’s betrayal, Adrian’s return, Evelyn’s disappearance, the fraud investigation, the hidden documents…
Now the message was pointing at Marcus.
My husband.
The man who had walked into the ballroom ready to expose the truth.
The man who had stood beside me when everyone else looked away.
The man who had promised me we were a team.
Marcus stared at the screen.
Then slowly looked around the room.
“Who sent that?””
No answer.
Security searched the area.
Daniel stood frozen near the table.
Vanessa looked at Marcus.
And for the first time all night, I saw something different in her eyes.
Not victory.
Confusion.
Because she didn’t expect this either.
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Marcus.””
He looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
That scared me.
Because Evelyn Cross was a woman who had carried a secret for ten years.
She knew how to control her expression.
She knew how to hide fear.
But now she looked afraid.
“Mother.””
Her eyes moved to the screen.
“Tell me.””
Evelyn took a slow breath.
“Your father left something behind.””
Marcus stared.
“What?””
“A message.””
“What kind of message?””
“One that was never supposed to be found.””
The room went quiet.
Daniel stepped forward.
“This is getting out of control.””
Marcus turned toward him.
“You don’t get to tell me that.””
Daniel stopped.
Marcus’s voice became colder.
“You were involved.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Daniel looked away.
And that was enough.
Marcus turned back to Evelyn.
“What did my father leave?””
Evelyn looked at me.
And my heart sank.
Because I knew that look.
She wasn’t just afraid.
She was apologizing.
“Nia knows.””
Marcus looked at me.
Again.
Always me.
Every secret seemed to return to me.
“I don’t.””
Evelyn shook her head.
“You do.””
“No.””
“Nia.””
Her voice softened.
“You found it.””
My mind raced.
Found what?
Then I remembered.
The night after Adrian disappeared.
The office.
The envelope.
The letter.
The one I never finished.
The one I hid because I was afraid of what it meant.
My breathing changed.
Marcus noticed.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“There was something else.””
His expression hardened.
“What else?””
I swallowed.
“After Adrian disappeared, I found a second envelope.””
Everyone became silent.
Vanessa stared.
“A second envelope?””
I nodded.
“It wasn’t from Adrian.””
Marcus stepped closer.
“Who was it from?””
I looked at Evelyn.
“Your father.””
The reaction was immediate.
Marcus looked like he had been hit.
“My father wrote to you?””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Not to me.””
I looked at the crowd.
“He left it for whoever found the truth.””
Marcus stared.
“And you had it?””
“Yes.””
“Where is it?””
I looked down.
“I don’t know.””
The answer shocked everyone.
Vanessa laughed.
“You’re serious?””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
“Convenient.””
I ignored her.
“After I read the first few lines, I panicked.””
Marcus’s voice softened.
“What did it say?””
I closed my eyes.
“I don’t remember everything.””
“But?””
I remembered enough.
“It said that the person who destroyed Cross Legacy was not an outsider.””
The room went silent.
Marcus looked at the screen.
“The person was inside.””
I nodded.
“Yes.””
Evelyn whispered:
“That was what your father discovered.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“Then why does the message say my name?””
Nobody answered.
Until Adrian did.
“Because your father was protecting you.””
Marcus looked at him.
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Adrian looked at the screen.
“It does if the person who betrayed your family wanted you to take the blame.””
Marcus stared.
“You’re saying someone framed me?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
Then back at Marcus.
“But why?””
Adrian looked at her.
“Because Marcus was the only person who could expose them.””
A silence followed.
Then Marcus asked:
“Who?””
Adrian looked at me.
I hated that.
Because I already knew.
The truth was getting closer.
And every step closer hurt someone.
I whispered:
“My father.””
Everyone looked at me.
Marcus frowned.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“Not your father.””
I shook my head.
“Mine.””
The room went still.
I continued.
“My father worked in finance.””
Marcus listened.
“He was one of the people who discovered the first signs of fraud.””
Evelyn nodded slowly.
“He was involved.””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked confused.
“But you never told me your father was connected.””
“Because he disappeared too.””
The words changed everything.
Vanessa stopped smiling.
Adrian looked down.
Marcus stared.
“Your father disappeared?””
I nodded.
“When I was twenty-four.””
“How?””
“I don’t know.””
The pain in my voice was obvious.
“I was told he left because he was ashamed.””
I laughed quietly.
“But now I think someone wanted me to believe that.””
Evelyn looked at Marcus.
“Do you understand now?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“Your family and Nia’s family were connected long before you met.””
Marcus looked at me.
“You knew?””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“I didn’t.””
“And Adrian?””
I looked at him.
He was silent.
Marcus’s face changed.
“You knew.””
Adrian looked away.
“I knew your families were connected.””
My heart dropped.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
Adrian looked at me.
“Because I was trying to find the person behind it.””
“And you used me?””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I was trying to keep you alive.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
He looked around.
“My whole life, everyone has been protecting me by lying to me.””
Nobody responded.
Because nobody could.
Marcus walked away from the table.
For the first time that night, he looked exhausted.
Not powerful.
Not wealthy.
Just a man realizing his entire history had missing pages.
Then the ballroom doors opened again.
A security officer rushed in.
“Mr. Cross.””
Marcus turned.
“What now?””
The officer held a small device.
“We found the source of the messages.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus walked over.
“Who?””
The officer looked uncomfortable.
“It wasn’t outside the building.””
“Then where?””
The officer looked directly at the stage.
“It came from the main control system.””
Daniel frowned.
“That’s impossible.””
The officer shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at Marcus.
“It was activated using your personal access code.””
Marcus went silent.
“My code?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Someone had access to you.””
Marcus looked around the room.
Then slowly looked at me.
My heart broke.
Because for a second…
I thought he suspected me.
But then his eyes moved past me.
To someone standing behind us.
Someone who had barely spoken all night.
Someone who had been watching.
Someone who had been present at every important moment.
Marcus’s expression changed.
Because he recognized something.
A detail nobody else noticed.
A ring.
A familiar ring.
The same ring his father used to wear.
The same ring seen in the old security photograph.
Marcus whispered:
“No.””
The person stepped backward.
Security moved.
Marcus stared.
“Where did you get that?””
The person said nothing.
“Answer me.””
Slowly…
The person removed the ring.
And everyone saw the engraving inside.
A family symbol.
The Cross family symbol.
Marcus looked at Evelyn.
Then at Vanessa.
Then at me.
Because the person holding the ring was someone who should never have been there.
Someone who had been erased from every record.
Someone who had been dead for years.
And then the person spoke.
“I think it’s time you learned the truth about who your father really was.””
Marcus froze.
Because the voice was familiar.
Too familiar.
The person stepped into the light.
May you like
And said:
“I’m your brother.””
