Chapter 7: The Truth Beneath the Lie

The message remained on the screen.

Bright.

Impossible to ignore.

*THEY ARE BOTH LYING.*

And beneath it:

*NIA KNOWS WHY.*

The darkness around us felt heavier than before.

The ballroom had become a room full of shadows and questions.

Security moved instantly.

Phone flashlights appeared throughout the crowd.

Guests whispered.

Reporters pushed forward.

Everyone wanted the same thing.

An explanation.

But I couldn’t give one.

Because I didn’t understand the message.

Not completely.

Marcus turned toward me.

Slowly.

Carefully.

“Nia.””

I looked at him.

And I saw it.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Fear.

He was afraid because he didn’t know which version of reality was real anymore.

Neither did I.

“I don’t know what that means,” I whispered.

Vanessa laughed from somewhere in the darkness.

A bitter, quiet laugh.

“Of course you don’t.””

The lights came back on.

Everyone turned.

Vanessa stood near the stage, her black gown still perfect, but her confidence gone.

For the first time, she looked like someone who had lost control of the story.

Marcus looked at her.

“Did you send that?””

“No.””

Adrian looked around.

“Someone else is here.””

Security immediately checked the entrances.

Daniel closed the laptop connected to the screen.

“We need to move everyone away from this room.””

Marcus shook his head.

“No.””

The attorney looked surprised.

“Marcus.””

“No more hiding.””

His eyes moved across the guests.

“My family has spent years protecting secrets.””

Then he looked at me.

“I’m done letting secrets decide what happens next.””

The words hurt.

Because they included me.

Even if he didn’t say it.

I knew he still wondered what I had hidden.

Adrian stepped forward.

“You need to understand something.””

Marcus looked at him.

“You’re not in a position to give me advice.””

Adrian accepted that.

“You’re right.””

His voice was calm.

“But if we don’t figure out who sent that message, Vanessa isn’t the only person in danger.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Are you threatening me?””

“No.””

Adrian looked around the room.

“I’m warning you.””

A security officer approached Marcus.

“Mr. Cross, we found the source.””

Everyone turned.

Marcus asked:

“Where?””

The officer looked uncomfortable.

“Inside the building.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

The officer hesitated.

“We don’t know.””

Marcus frowned.

“What do you mean you don’t know?””

“The device was placed remotely.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“A burner?””

The officer nodded.

“Most likely.””

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“That’s convenient.””

Everyone looked at her.

She pointed at Adrian.

“He appears after six years, suddenly knows everything, and now some mysterious person exposes all of us?””

Adrian looked at her.

“You think I did this?””

“I think you’re capable of anything.””

His face changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

Because despite everything between them, he understood.

Vanessa was trying to make him the villain again.

The same way she had done six years ago.

I looked at Adrian.

“Did you send it?””

He stared at me.

“No.””

I believed him.

And that scared me.

Because I had spent years trying to forget him.

Trying to convince myself he was the reason my life fell apart.

But standing there, watching him, I realized something terrifying.

Maybe he wasn’t the monster I remembered.

Maybe he was another person trapped in someone else’s game.

Marcus noticed my expression.

“You believe him?””

The question cut.

I looked at my husband.

“I don’t know what I believe.””

That answer hurt both of us.

But it was the truth.

Daniel walked toward the table and gathered the documents.

“There’s something we need to examine.””

Marcus looked at him.

“What?””

“These files.””

He held up the fraud audit.

“They were created to look like evidence against Nia and Vanessa.””

“What does that mean?””

“It means someone wanted both of them destroyed.””

Everyone went quiet.

Vanessa frowned.

“Both of us?””

Daniel nodded.

“Yes.””

He opened the folder.

“The documents accusing Vanessa were real.””

Her expression changed.

“But the documents connecting Nia to the fraud were manipulated.””

My heart stopped.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“You’re sure?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at me.

“The signatures were copied. The timestamps were altered.””

Vanessa stared.

“So someone framed both of us?””

“Exactly.””

Adrian looked toward the entrance.

“That was the plan.””

Marcus turned.

“What plan?””

“To make the Cross family collapse from the inside.””

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus asked the question everyone was thinking.

“Who?””

Adrian looked at me.

And I knew before he said it.

He didn’t want to.

“Someone who knew all of us.””

My chest tightened.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Marcus looked around the room.

His eyes moved over employees.

Executives.

Family friends.

People who had been standing near him for years.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“You said my father’s attorney was involved.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at Adrian.

“And you said my father was investigating someone.””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

Adrian hesitated.

That hesitation told me the answer was dangerous.

“Nia knows.””

Every person in the room turned toward me.

I felt my heart drop.

“What?””

Adrian looked at me.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“No, don’t do that.””

Marcus looked between us.

“What does he mean?””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know.””

Adrian’s voice softened.

“You do.””

“No.””

“Nia.””

“Stop saying my name like that.””

The room went silent.

Because my voice broke.

I hated that.

I hated showing weakness in front of them.

But I was tired.

Tired of being the person everyone expected to have answers.

Adrian lowered his voice.

“You remember the envelope.””

My breathing stopped.

The envelope.

Six years ago.

The one I found in my office after Adrian disappeared.

The one I never showed anyone.

Not the police.

Not my lawyer.

Not Marcus.

Because I was afraid of what it contained.

Marcus noticed.

“Nia.””

I looked at him.

And I knew.

The secret I had protected was finally coming out.

“I found something after Adrian disappeared.””

Vanessa immediately smiled.

“There it is.””

I ignored her.

“I found an envelope.””

Marcus’s face changed.

“You found evidence?””

“No.””

I swallowed.

“It wasn’t evidence.””

“Then what was it?””

I looked at Adrian.

He looked away.

That hurt.

Because I realized he had been waiting for me to say it.

“I found a letter.””

“From who?””

I closed my eyes.

“Adrian.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at him.

“You wrote her a letter?””

“Yes.””

Adrian’s voice was quiet.

“What did it say?””

I looked down.

“I never finished reading it.””

Everyone stared.

“What?””

I took a breath.

“Because the first line scared me.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“What was the first line?””

I remembered the paper.

The handwriting.

The words.

The reason I buried it.

I whispered:

“It said…”

My voice trembled.

“‘Nia, if you’re reading this, it means I failed to stop them.’”

Adrian closed his eyes.

Because he knew what came next.

Marcus looked at him.

“Stop who?””

I looked at Adrian.

And finally asked the question I had been too afraid to ask six years ago.

“Who were you trying to stop?””

Adrian looked at Marcus.

Then Vanessa.

Then me.

And answered:

“Your mother.””

The entire room froze.

Marcus stared.

“My mother died ten years ago.””

Adrian nodded.

“I know.””

“Then why did you say her name?””

Adrian’s face turned pale.

“Because she wasn’t dead when I wrote that letter.””

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Marcus took a step back.

“That’s impossible.””

Adrian shook his head.

“I wish it was.””

Vanessa whispered:

“You’re insane.””

Adrian looked at her.

“No.””

His voice became cold.

“I saw her.””

Marcus looked like the world had shifted beneath him.

“My mother…”

He couldn’t finish.

Then the ballroom doors opened again.

Everyone turned.

A woman stood there.

Older.

Elegant.

Calm.

Security immediately reached for their radios.

But Marcus froze.

Because he knew her.

Everyone saw it on his face.

The impossible recognition.

The woman looked directly at him.

And smiled.

“Hello, Marcus.””

His lips parted.

“No…”

The woman stepped into the light.

And said:

“I think it’s time you learned what your family really did.””

May you like

Marcus whispered the only word he could say.

“Mom?””
