Chapter 12: The Truth Hidden Before Birth
Nobody touched the envelope.
Not me.
Not Claire.
Not anyone.
Because suddenly the envelope wasn’t just paper.
It was a doorway.
And everyone in that room knew once it opened, there was no going back.
I looked at Maya.
She was watching my face.
Trying to understand the conversation adults had built around her.
I hated that.
I hated that she had spent her whole life surrounded by things she wasn’t allowed to know.
I picked up the envelope.
“Before I open this, I need answers.””
Claire leaned back.
“Ask.””
“Who was looking for Maya?””
Angela stepped forward.
“I want to know too.””
Claire looked at her.
“You should.””
Angela’s expression hardened.
“Don’t talk like you care.””
Claire ignored her.
“The people searching for Maya were not looking for a child.””
“Then what were they looking for?””
Claire looked at the envelope.
“Information.””
I frowned.
“What information?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
And that bothered me.
“Claire.””
She sighed.
“Before Maya was born, Danielle discovered that the adoption agency had a mistake in their records.””
I looked at the documents.
“What mistake?””
“Maya’s birth file was connected to another case.””
Angela shook her head.
“No.””
Claire looked at her.
“Yes.””
The room went silent.
Angela stepped back.
“What case?””
Claire looked at Maya.
“A case involving her biological father.””
My chest tightened.
I looked at Angela.
“You never mentioned him.””
Her eyes filled.
“Because I was told he didn’t want anything to do with us.””
I looked at Claire.
“You knew?””
“Yes.””
“Who was he?””
Claire didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Who?””
She finally said:
“Someone powerful.””
That word meant nothing.
Everyone powerful had secrets.
Everyone powerful had excuses.
I wanted a name.
“Who?””
Claire looked at me.
Then at Evelyn.
My mother looked terrified.
And that was when I knew.
The answer was close.
Too close.
“He was someone in your life.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
Claire continued.
“Someone you trusted.””
I looked around the room.
Daniel.
Evelyn.
Angela.
The family members still standing there.
Every face became suspicious.
“No.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“You’re lying.””
“Am I?””
She pointed toward the envelope.
“Danielle wrote the truth inside.””
I looked down.
My fingers trembled.
I opened it.
The first page was covered in Danielle’s handwriting.
My heart broke seeing it.
Her letters.
Her words.
Her.
*Marcus,*
*If you are reading this, then I failed to protect you the way I promised I would.*
I swallowed.
I kept reading.
*The day Maya came into our lives was the happiest day of mine. But it was also the day I realized someone had been watching us.*
My hands shook.
I turned the page.
*I found evidence that Maya’s adoption was connected to a person who wanted control over her future.*
I looked up.
Claire was watching me.
I continued.
*I tried to tell you, but I was afraid. Not because I didn’t trust you. Because I knew what you would do.*
A tear fell from my eye.
That was Danielle.
She always knew me.
I turned another page.
Then I saw the sentence.
The one that made my entire body freeze.
*Marcus, Maya is not only your daughter. She is the reason someone tried to destroy our family.*
I stopped.
My heart raced.
Below it was a name.
The name Danielle had been trying to reveal.
I whispered it.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
I looked at Claire.
Then Evelyn.
Then Daniel.
Because the name on the page belonged to someone I had defended my entire life.
Someone I never questioned.
Someone who had been sitting at my family table.
The name was:
*Marcus Hill.*
My own.
I looked up, confused.
“What?””
The room was silent.
Then Claire spoke.
“Danielle discovered the truth.””
I stared at the letter.
“My name is on this.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
My breathing stopped.
“What does that mean?””
Nobody answered.
Then Evelyn whispered:
“Marcus…”
Her voice broke.
“You need to know something.””
I looked at her.
May you like
She cried.
“You were never told the truth about your own birth.””
