Chapter 5: The Name Written In Her Handwriting

I stared at the name.

My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

It was only four letters.

But those four letters changed the entire room.

Daniel.

My brother.

The person who had stood beside me when Danielle died.

The person who helped me carry furniture into my first apartment.

The person who called Maya “his little princess.””

The person who had just told me he thought Mom was “handling it.””

My hands went numb.

“Daniel.””

Everyone turned.

My brother froze.

“What?””

I lifted the letter.

“Why is your name in Danielle’s handwriting?””

The color disappeared from his face.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then Daniel looked at Evelyn.

Not me.

Her.

And that told me everything.

“You knew.””

His voice was barely a whisper.

Evelyn looked away.

“You promised.””

My eyes moved between them.

“Promised what?””

Daniel stepped back.

“Marcus, it’s not what you think.””

I almost smiled.

People always said that when it was exactly what you thought.

“Then tell me what it is.””

Daniel opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

I walked closer.

“You were there when Danielle died.””

His face tightened.

“Yes.””

“You were helping me.””

“Yes.””

“You knew about the letter.””

He looked down.

“Yes.””

The room exploded with silence.

I felt something inside me crack.

Not anger.

Betrayal.

Because anger was easy.

Betrayal was heavier.

“You knew?””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Mom told me.””

I turned toward Evelyn.

“And you still let me believe nobody knew?””

She looked ashamed.

“I was trying to handle it.””

I slammed my hand on the table.

“Stop saying that!””

The dishes shook.

Maya jumped.

I immediately lowered my voice.

I hated that she saw me angry.

I hated that my family had dragged her into this.

I took a breath.

Then I looked at Daniel.

“What did Danielle find?””

He rubbed his face.

“Marcus…”

“What did she find?””

He closed his eyes.

“She found paperwork.””

“About Maya?””

“Yes.””

My heart pounded.

“What paperwork?””

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

She nodded slightly.

Like she was giving him permission.

That made me even angrier.

“She found adoption records.””

The room went still.

I stared at him.

“What?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She thought something was wrong with Maya’s birth records.””

I shook my head.

“That’s impossible.””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“It’s not.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“My daughter is my daughter.””

Nobody said anything.

Because that wasn’t the question.

I knew Maya was mine.

I had been there for every doctor appointment.

Every night feeding.

Every first step.

Every birthday.

Blood didn’t create that.

Love did.

But my family wasn’t talking about love.

They were talking about something hidden.

“What did Danielle discover?””

Daniel whispered:

“Maya’s original records were changed.””

I felt the room spin.

“Changed by who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Maya spoke.

“Dad?””

I turned.

She was standing at the hallway entrance.

Her face was pale.

“How come everyone keeps talking like I’m not here?””

That sentence destroyed me.

Because she was right.

Everyone had spent years discussing her.

Protecting her.

Hiding things from her.

But nobody had asked her what she felt.

I walked to her immediately.

“You’re right.””

I held her hand.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked up.

“Is something wrong with me?””

My heart broke.

“No.””

I touched her cheek.

“Nothing is wrong with you.””

“Then why does Grandma act like I did something bad?””

I looked at Evelyn.

My mother looked away.

That was her answer.

I turned back to Maya.

“You are the best thing that ever happened to me.””

She hugged me.

And for a moment, the entire mystery disappeared.

Until I noticed something.

On the floor near the kitchen counter.

A small folder.

It had fallen when everyone moved around.

I picked it up.

My name was written on the front.

Not Danielle’s.

Not Evelyn’s.

Mine.

Inside were copies of documents.

Birth records.

Medical forms.

And one page with a handwritten note attached.

The handwriting wasn’t Danielle’s.

It wasn’t Evelyn’s.

It wasn’t mine.

I read the sentence.

And my blood turned cold.

*If Marcus ever finds out the truth, make sure he knows Maya was never supposed to survive.*

I looked up slowly.

Everyone was staring at me.

May you like

And Daniel whispered:

“Marcus… you need to know what happened the night Maya was born.””
