Chapter 7: The Woman Behind The Secret

The phone kept vibrating on the kitchen counter.

Nobody moved.

The name on the screen seemed impossible.

A stranger’s name.

A name my daughter recognized.

A name my mother had spent years making sure we never heard.

Maya’s fingers tightened around mine.

“Dad…”

I looked down at her.

“Yeah?””

“Is she mad at me?””

The question almost broke me.

Not “Who is she?””

Not “Why is she calling?””

My daughter’s first thought was whether someone was angry with her.

I crouched beside her.

“No, sweetheart.””

I held her shoulders gently.

“No one gets to be mad at you for existing.””

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“But Grandma said…”

I looked toward Evelyn.

My mother looked away.

“What did Grandma say?””

Maya hesitated.

“She said my real family would only hurt me.””

The room went silent.

I stood slowly.

“Your real family?””

My voice shook.

Evelyn immediately stepped forward.

“Marcus, I can explain.””

“No.””

I pointed toward the phone.

“Not until she explains.””

The phone stopped ringing.

For a moment, everyone breathed again.

Then it started.

Again.

Evelyn stared at it like it was a bomb.

Daniel looked at her.

“You have to answer.””

She shook her head.

“I can’t.””

“You have to.””

I reached for the phone.

Evelyn grabbed my wrist.

“Marcus.””

The fear in her voice stopped me.

Not because I was afraid.

Because I realized something.

My mother wasn’t afraid of the woman calling.

She was afraid of what I would learn.

I pulled my hand away.

“Answer it.””

Evelyn looked at the screen.

Then slowly pressed the button.

“Hello?””

Her voice was barely audible.

Nobody spoke.

I watched every expression on her face.

The anger.

The fear.

The guilt.

Then she handed the phone to me.

“She wants to talk to you.””

My heart pounded.

I took it.

“Hello?””

For a few seconds, there was only silence.

Then a woman’s voice.

A voice full of years of pain.

“Is this Marcus?””

I looked at Maya.

“Yes.””

“My name is Angela.””

I waited.

“I’ve been trying to find you for ten years.””

The words hit me.

Ten years.

My daughter was ten.

I walked away from the others.

“Why?””

The woman on the phone took a shaky breath.

“Because your mother lied to you.””

My eyes moved toward Evelyn.

She lowered her head.

“What did she lie about?””

Angela was quiet.

Then she said:

“She told you Maya was abandoned.””

My grip tightened.

“What?””

“She told you there was no one looking for your daughter.””

I looked at Maya.

The little girl who had spent years believing she was a burden.

“Are you saying that’s not true?””

“No.””

Angela’s voice cracked.

“I never abandoned her.””

The room disappeared.

I heard nothing except those words.

“I never abandoned her.””

I closed my eyes.

“Then why wasn’t she with you?””

Silence.

A painful one.

Finally, Angela answered.

“Because I was told she had died.””

My entire body went cold.

“What?””

“I was told my baby didn’t survive.””

I looked at Evelyn.

She looked terrified.

“Who told you that?””

Angela whispered:

“Your mother.””

The phone almost slipped from my hand.

“No.””

“I spent years grieving a child who was alive.””

I turned away.

“Why would she do that?””

Angela’s voice became softer.

“Because she didn’t think I was good enough to raise her.””

I looked at Evelyn.

The woman who always talked about family.

The woman who always said blood mattered.

The woman who made my daughter sit beside a dog.

“You lied to her.””

Evelyn started crying.

“Marcus…”

I covered the phone.

“Not now.””

Then I returned it to my ear.

“Angela, where are you?””

“I’m outside.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“I didn’t know if you would believe me.””

I walked toward the front windows.

Slowly.

Carefully.

And there she was.

Standing outside the mansion gates.

A woman around my age.

Holding an old photograph.

Watching the house.

Watching us.

“Maya,” she whispered.

I looked back.

My daughter was standing behind me.

The same expression.

The same eyes.

I understood immediately.

There was a reason Angela knew her.

Because she wasn’t just searching for a child.

She was searching for her daughter.

I walked to the door.

Evelyn rushed forward.

“Marcus, don’t.””

I turned.

“Why?””

Her face collapsed.

“Because you don’t know what she wants.””

I opened the door.

“No.””

I looked at my mother.

“I don’t know what you wanted.””

Outside, Angela stepped closer.

Her eyes filled when she saw Maya.

And Maya looked back at her.

A stranger.

But somehow familiar.

Then Angela whispered:

“I’m sorry it took me this long.””

Maya looked at me.

“Dad?””

I held her hand.

And for the first time in ten years, I allowed another person to stand between my daughter and the secrets surrounding her.

But as Angela walked inside, she looked at Evelyn.

May you like

And said one sentence that made my blood run cold.

“You know the truth about why Danielle died.””
