Chapter 8: The Truth Danielle Took With Her

Nobody spoke after Angela said those words.

Not even Evelyn.

The woman who always had an answer.

The woman who could control any room.

Now she looked like someone who had finally run out of places to hide.

I stepped between Maya and the adults.

“Angela.””

She looked at me.

“What do you mean?””

Her eyes moved toward Evelyn.

“She knows.””

My jaw tightened.

“Knows what?””

Angela looked at Maya.

Then lowered her voice.

“The reason Danielle started investigating.””

I felt my chest tighten.

“My wife was investigating you?””

“No.””

Angela shook her head.

“She was investigating what happened to Maya.””

I looked at Evelyn.

“What happened?””

My mother sat down.

Slowly.

Like her legs couldn’t hold her anymore.

“I never wanted anyone hurt.””

I stared at her.

“That’s not an answer.””

She covered her face.

“I made mistakes.””

Daniel spoke quietly.

“Mom.””

She looked at him.

And for once, there was disappointment in her eyes.

“You knew too.””

Daniel looked down.

I felt another piece of my family break apart.

“How long?””

Daniel swallowed.

“A few years.””

I laughed quietly.

“How many people knew my daughter’s life was built on lies?””

Nobody answered.

Angela stepped closer.

“Marcus, I know this is a lot.””

I looked at her.

“A lot?””

My voice cracked.

“My daughter was told she wasn’t important enough to sit at a table.””

Angela looked at Maya.

Pain crossed her face.

“She never deserved that.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“She didn’t.””

Maya stood quietly.

Watching.

Listening.

I hated every second of it.

Because she was supposed to be worrying about homework.

Friends.

Cartoons.

Not adults explaining why they stole pieces of her identity.

I walked over and wrapped my arm around her.

“Do you want to go upstairs?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

I looked surprised.

She looked scared.

But determined.

“I want to know.””

The words were quiet.

But powerful.

Everyone heard them.

Maya looked at Evelyn.

“I want to know why Grandma didn’t want me.””

Evelyn broke.

“I did want you.””

Maya shook her head.

“Then why did you hide my mom?””

My mother had no answer.

That was the moment I realized.

Maya was stronger than all of us.

She had been carrying this pain silently.

And now she was asking the question none of the adults had the courage to ask.

Angela wiped her eyes.

“Your grandmother believed she was protecting the family.””

Maya looked confused.

“From me?””

“No.””

Angela shook her head.

“Never from you.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“From the truth.””

I turned toward my mother.

“Tell me.””

Evelyn stayed silent.

So I asked again.

“Tell me what happened.””

Finally, she spoke.

“When Danielle discovered the truth about Maya’s adoption, she confronted me.””

My heart raced.

“What truth?””

Evelyn looked at Angela.

“She found out Angela had been lied to.””

Angela nodded.

“Yes.””

My mother continued.

“She also found out the agency records had been changed.””

“By you?””

Evelyn looked down.

“I asked someone to correct them.””

I stared.

“Correct them?””

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

Her voice cracked.

“I believed Maya deserved stability.””

I felt anger rise.

“So you erased her mother?””

“No.””

Angela interrupted.

“You erased me.””

The room went silent.

Evelyn looked at her.

“I thought you would come back and take her.””

Angela nodded.

“And you decided you had the right to make that choice.””

Evelyn had no response.

I looked at the documents.

The blue envelope.

The letter.

Everything.

“Where does Danielle fit into this?””

Angela’s expression changed.

“She found proof.””

“Proof of what?””

Angela reached into her purse.

She pulled out a small photograph.

She placed it on the table.

It was old.

A hospital photo.

A newborn baby.

And beside the baby…

Danielle.

Holding her.

On the back was a handwritten message.

I picked it up.

The words were written by Danielle.

*I know who tried to change Maya’s records.*

My heart raced.

Below that was another sentence.

*It wasn’t Evelyn alone.*

I looked up.

“What does that mean?””

Angela’s face turned pale.

“Because someone else helped her.””

I looked around the room.

Everyone became uncomfortable.

Then Maya spoke.

“Dad?””

I turned.

She was staring at Daniel.

“Why is Uncle Daniel scared?””

Everyone looked at him.

Daniel froze.

Because he knew.

He had been exposed.

“Daniel.””

He slowly stepped backward.

“Marcus…”

“Tell me.””

His eyes filled.

“I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.””

My heart sank.

“What did you do?””

Daniel looked at Maya.

Then at me.

May you like

And whispered:

“I was the one who found Angela.””
