Chapter 14: The Truth Danielle Left Behind

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because those words changed everything.

Danielle didn’t die because of an illness.

She died because someone wanted silence.

I looked at Claire.

“You’re saying my wife was murdered?””

Claire didn’t answer immediately.

And that was the answer.

I felt something inside me go cold.

“Who?””

Her eyes moved around the room.

“I don’t know.””

I stepped forward.

“Don’t lie.””

“I’m not.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“But I know someone was watching her.””

Angela stepped closer.

“Danielle told me she was scared.””

I looked at her.

“When?””

“Before she died.””

My chest tightened.

“You talked to Danielle?””

Angela nodded.

“She found me.””

The room went silent.

“She found you?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two weeks before she passed.””

I closed my eyes.

My wife had been fighting a battle alone.

A battle she didn’t tell me about.

“Why didn’t she tell me?””

Angela looked heartbroken.

“Because she thought you would try to fix everything.””

I almost smiled.

Because she knew me.

“She was right.””

Angela nodded.

“She loved you.””

I looked down.

“Then why leave me in the dark?””

She answered softly.

“Because she wanted you alive.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Maya.

Alive.

That word felt different now.

Like survival had always been the goal.

I opened Danielle’s letter again.

There was another page.

One I hadn’t noticed.

The handwriting was messier.

Like she wrote it quickly.

*Marcus,*

*If you found this, then you know the truth about your family. But there is one more thing you need to understand.*

I continued.

*The person who threatened Maya did not start with her. They started with you.*

My heart raced.

I turned the page.

*Your biological father discovered something before you were born. Something powerful people wanted hidden.*

I looked at Claire.

“Who were these people?””

She shook her head.

“I don’t know.””

But Daniel suddenly spoke.

“Yes, you do.””

Everyone looked at him.

He stepped forward.

“You know exactly who they are.””

Claire’s expression changed.

Daniel continued.

“You just don’t want Marcus to know.””

I looked at my brother.

“What are you talking about?””

Daniel looked at me.

“I found the original files.””

My heart jumped.

“When?””

“After Danielle died.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because Mom begged me not to.””

I looked at Evelyn.

Again.

Another secret.

“What was in those files?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Your biological father wasn’t just some random man.””

I waited.

“He was involved with the company Claire worked for.””

Claire’s face changed.

That was the first time I saw real fear from her.

“What company?””

Daniel looked at her.

“The company that disappeared after the scandal.””

My stomach tightened.

“What scandal?””

Daniel looked at me.

“The scandal your father tried to expose.””

Silence.

Then Maya whispered:

“Dad?””

I turned.

She was looking at the photograph on the table.

The hospital photo.

The baby.

Danielle.

And behind them…

A man.

I picked it up.

I had never noticed him before.

“Who is that?””

Nobody answered.

Then Angela whispered:

“That’s Maya’s biological father.””

I stared.

My hands trembled.

Because I recognized him.

Not from memory.

From somewhere else.

I looked at Daniel.

“Why does he look familiar?””

Daniel’s face went pale.

“Because you’ve seen him before.””

I frowned.

“Where?””

Daniel looked at me.

“In the mirror.””

My entire body froze.

“What?””

He shook his head.

“No.””

He corrected himself.

“Not exactly.””

He pointed at the photograph.

“He was your father’s twin brother.””

The room went silent.

My father had a twin.

A twin nobody told me about.

A twin connected to Maya.

A twin connected to the secrets.

Then Daniel whispered:

“And Marcus…”

I looked at him.

“The man in the photo wasn’t just Maya’s biological grandfather.””

May you like

I waited.

“He was also the person who saved your life before you were born.””
