Chapter 4: The Brother Nobody Knew Existed

Sophia stared at the photograph until her eyes burned.

Two babies.

Two tiny faces.

Two lives that had been separated before they had even taken their first breaths.

Her hands trembled as she turned the picture over again, hoping somehow the words would change.

They didn’t.

*One was yours. One was theirs.*

And beneath it:

*Liam Whitmore.*

A name that should have belonged to a child she raised.

A name that should have been written on birthday cards.

A name that should have been spoken across her dinner table.

Instead, it existed only on a piece of paper hidden for ten years.

“Mom?””

Ethan’s voice pulled her back.

Sophia looked at him.

The boy who had walked through a storm searching for her.

The boy who had spent his whole life believing she abandoned him.

The boy who might only be half of a story she never knew existed.

She lowered herself to his height.

“Ethan…”

He looked nervous.

“Is something wrong?””

Sophia struggled to find the words.

How could she explain something she didn’t understand herself?

How could she tell a child that the world he knew might have been built on lies?

“I need to ask you something.””

Ethan nodded.

“Okay.””

“Did your grandmother ever tell you about another child?””

His eyebrows pulled together.

“No.””

“Never?””

He shook his head.

“She only talked about you.””

Sophia looked back at the photograph.

“Did she ever mention the name Liam?””

The boy thought carefully.

Then his face changed.

“Wait.””

Sophia looked at him.

“What?””

“My grandma had a box.””

“What kind of box?””

“A wooden one.””

“Where was it?””

“Under her bed.””

Sophia’s heart started racing.

“What was inside?””

“I don’t know.””

Ethan looked down.

“She told me never to open it.””

“Why?””

He whispered:

“She said it wasn’t my secret to know.””

Sophia stood.

A secret.

That was all her life had become.

Secrets.

Lies.

Missing pieces.

She walked to the fireplace where she kept old photographs.

For years, she had avoided looking at them.

The day Ethan was born.

The hospital bracelet she kept after she was told he died.

The last picture she took before everything changed.

She opened a locked drawer.

Inside was a small blue notebook.

The cover was worn.

The pages were filled with handwriting from a younger version of herself.

A woman who believed she was about to become a mother.

Sophia opened to the first page.

*Baby Whitmore.*

She smiled sadly.

She had written lists.

Names.

Dreams.

Things she wanted to teach her child.

Then she found something she had completely forgotten.

A page written the night before delivery.

*If it’s a boy, I think I’ll name him Ethan.*

Her fingers froze.

Because underneath that sentence was another line.

One she didn’t remember writing.

*And if there are two heartbeats…*

Sophia stopped.

Her breathing changed.

She read the sentence again.

*And if there are two heartbeats, I’ll love them both.*

She dropped the notebook.

“No…”

Ethan looked frightened.

“What happened?””

Sophia picked up the notebook slowly.

“I thought there was only one baby.””

A memory flashed.

The doctor during her final ultrasound.

His worried expression.

The way he avoided eye contact.

She had been told the pregnancy was complicated.

She had been told not to panic.

She had been told everything was fine.

But what if it wasn’t?

What if someone had already decided what would happen before she even gave birth?

Sophia grabbed her phone.

She called the one person who might have answers.

Dr. Emily Carter.

Her former obstetrician.

The woman who delivered her baby.

The woman who disappeared from her life immediately afterward.

The phone rang.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Then:

“Hello?””

Sophia closed her eyes.

The voice was older.

But familiar.

“Emily.””

Silence.

A long, uncomfortable silence.

“Sophia?””

“Yes.””

Another pause.

Then Emily’s voice became tense.

“Why are you calling me?””

Sophia looked at Ethan.

“Because I found my son.””

The silence that followed felt different.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“Oh God.””

Sophia’s grip tightened.

“You knew.””

“No.””

“You knew something.””

“Sophia, listen to me—”

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“You listen.””

She walked toward the window.

“You looked me in the eyes ten years ago and told me my baby died.””

Emily said nothing.

“And now I have a seven-year-old boy standing in my house holding a picture of me in a hospital bed.””

“Sophia…”

“Tell me the truth.””

A shaky breath came through the phone.

“I tried.””

Sophia froze.

“Tried what?””

“I tried to stop them.””

“Who?””

Emily’s voice lowered.

“The Whitmore family.””

The name hit harder than she expected.

Her family.

Her father’s company.

Her own blood.

Sophia stepped back.

“What are you saying?””

“Your father knew.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“My father died six years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then why are you telling me this now?””

“Because he wasn’t the only one involved.””

Sophia looked at the photograph again.

Two babies.

Two bracelets.

Two missing truths.

“Who else?””

Emily hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Your brother.””

Sophia went completely still.

Her older brother, Adrian.

The man who had taken over parts of the family business after their father’s death.

The man who had comforted her when she lost her baby.

The man who told her:

“You have to accept this, Sophia. Life is cruel.””

Her stomach turned.

“No.””

Emily’s voice was barely audible.

“I’m sorry.””

Sophia’s anger replaced the shock.

“Where is Liam?””

Emily didn’t answer.

“Emily.””

“I don’t know.””

“You delivered him.””

“Yes.””

“Then how can you not know?””

“Because they took him.””

Sophia closed her eyes.

“Who?””

Emily’s breathing became uneven.

“The same people who took Ethan.””

A horrible realization formed.

The organization.

The men in the black SUV.

Daniel Cross.

Her brother.

Everyone connected.

Everyone who had stolen years from her.

“Why?”” Sophia asked.

“Because of your father’s inheritance.””

Sophia frowned.

“What?””

Emily swallowed.

“Your father had a private trust. A condition.””

Sophia knew every detail of the family finances.

Or she thought she did.

“What condition?””

“The Whitmore bloodline had to continue.””

“That makes no sense.””

“It does if you understand what your father believed.””

Sophia felt disgust rising.

“He wanted an heir.””

“Yes.””

“And?””

Emily hesitated.

“And he believed your child could be controlled.””

Sophia looked at Ethan.

A child.

Her child.

Not a person to them.

An asset.

A piece on a board.

“What happened to Liam?””

“I don’t know.””

Emily’s voice broke.

“But I know someone does.””

“Who?””

Before Emily could answer, the line went dead.

Sophia stared at the phone.

Then she heard something.

A sound from outside.

A car door closing.

She moved toward the window.

The black SUV was parked at the gate.

Again.

Watching.

But this time, someone stepped out.

Not Daniel.

Not one of his men.

A tall man wearing a dark coat.

A man Sophia recognized instantly.

Her heart stopped.

Because he was supposed to be dead.

Her brother’s voice echoed in her memory.

“Sophia, some things are better left buried.””

The man looked up toward the window.

Their eyes met.

And he smiled.

Adrian Whitmore.

The brother who had buried her son’s truth.

The brother who had attended her funeral for the child she lost.

The brother who now stood outside her home alive.

Sophia stepped away from the window.

Impossible.

Unless…

Unless there was another lie.

The front door suddenly opened.

Ethan grabbed her hand.

“Mom?””

Sophia couldn’t speak.

Because Adrian walked inside as if he still belonged there.

He removed his coat.

Looked at Ethan.

Then looked at Sophia.

And said the one sentence she never expected to hear:

“Congratulations, little sister.””

His eyes moved to the photograph in her hand.

“You finally found one of them.””

Sophia’s blood ran cold.

“One of them?””

Adrian smiled.

“Yes.””

May you like

He stepped closer.

“Because Liam was never the only child they took.””
