Chapter 5: The Family That Sold Its Own Blood
Sophia had spent ten years believing her greatest enemy was grief.
She was wrong.
Grief was honest.
It came every night when the house became silent.
It came in the form of an empty bedroom she never allowed anyone to enter.
It came when she saw mothers holding their children in grocery stores, airports, and parks.
Grief had never lied to her.
But Adrian Whitmore had.
Her own brother stood in front of her like the past had never happened.
Like he had not watched her fall apart.
Like he had not held her hand while she cried after losing her baby.
Like he had not helped bury the truth.
Sophia stared at him.
“You’re dead.””
Adrian’s expression didn’t change.
“That’s a strange way to greet family.””
Ethan moved closer to Sophia.
He didn’t understand everything happening around him.
But he understood one thing.
The adults in this room were afraid.
Sophia stepped in front of him.
“You don’t come into my house after ten years and pretend nothing happened.””
Adrian looked around.
“The house hasn’t changed much.””
“Get out.””
He smiled slightly.
“There she is.””
Sophia’s eyes hardened.
“The woman who asks questions.””
“No.””
Adrian tilted his head.
“The woman who asks questions too late.””
The words cut deeper because part of her feared they were true.
For years, she had accepted the answers people gave her.
Doctors.
Officials.
Family.
Everyone told her the same story.
Your baby died.
Move on.
But now every piece of that story was collapsing.
Sophia held up the photograph.
“Explain this.””
Adrian looked at it.
For the first time, something changed in his face.
Not guilt.
Recognition.
“You weren’t supposed to see that.””
Sophia’s stomach twisted.
“You knew.””
Adrian walked farther into the room.
“I knew many things.””
“Where is Liam?””
He ignored the question.
“You found Ethan.””
The way he said the name bothered her.
Not like he was talking about a child.
Like he was talking about a problem.
Sophia stepped closer.
“He has a name.””
Adrian looked at Ethan.
“Yes.””
Then he looked back at her.
“He does.””
The silence that followed was heavy.
Sophia understood.
Adrian didn’t see Ethan as her son.
He saw him as evidence.
“You’re disgusting.””
Adrian sighed.
“Still emotional.””
“Still heartless.””
“That’s why you were never prepared to lead this family.””
Sophia laughed once.
A cold, humorless sound.
“Is that what this is about?””
She pointed toward Ethan.
“Power?””
“Not power.””
“Then what?””
“Survival.””
Sophia stared at him.
“Explain.””
Adrian walked to the fireplace.
Their family crest hung above it.
A symbol of wealth.
Tradition.
Legacy.
A symbol Sophia once respected.
Now it looked like a warning.
“Our father built everything on one belief.””
Sophia said nothing.
“That the Whitmore name could never disappear.””
She crossed her arms.
“And?””
“And he became obsessed with protecting it.””
Adrian touched the family crest.
“When he learned you were pregnant, he started making plans.””
Sophia’s voice became quiet.
“What plans?””
Adrian turned.
“You were young.””
“I was twenty-five.””
“You were in love.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
Adrian studied her.
“You don’t remember the night before you gave birth, do you?””
Sophia froze.
“What?””
“The private meeting.””
A memory surfaced.
A dinner.
Her father.
Adrian.
Her father’s lawyers.
She had thought it was about business.
They congratulated her.
They talked about the future.
Then her father asked:
“What will happen to the company if something happens to you?””
At the time, she thought it was a strange question.
Now it felt terrifying.
Adrian continued.
“Father believed a child could secure the future of Whitmore International.””
“My child was not a business plan.””
“To him, everything was.””
Sophia’s hands curled into fists.
“What happened after I gave birth?””
Adrian looked away.
For a brief second, he seemed tired.
Almost human.
Then it disappeared.
“Things changed.””
“You mean you stole my son.””
“I mean the situation became complicated.””
“Complicated?””
Her voice rose.
“You took a newborn baby.””
Adrian looked at Ethan.
“You found one.””
Sophia felt a chill.
“One?””
Adrian walked toward the table.
“There were two children.””
“I know.””
“No.””
He looked at her.
“You know there were two babies.””
He paused.
“You don’t know what happened after.””
Sophia said nothing.
Adrian lowered his voice.
“One child stayed close.””
Her eyes moved to Ethan.
“And the other?””
Adrian looked at the photograph.
“Was sent away.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
His answer surprised her.
“I expect you to understand something.””
He stepped closer.
“The people who took Liam weren’t working for our father.””
Sophia frowned.
“What?””
“Our father wanted control.””
Adrian’s face became darker.
“But others wanted something else.””
“Who?””
He didn’t answer.
Sophia already knew.
“The organization.””
Adrian nodded.
“The same people who are looking for Ethan now.””
A terrible silence filled the room.
Ethan finally spoke.
“Why?””
Everyone looked at him.
The boy’s eyes were fixed on Adrian.
“Why did they take us?””
Adrian stared at him.
For a moment, Sophia saw something strange.
Pain.
A brief flash of regret.
Then it vanished.
“Because some people believe children can be used.””
Ethan’s voice became smaller.
“Used for what?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Sophia did.
“Money.””
The word tasted bitter.
Ethan looked down.
Sophia immediately regretted saying it.
She knelt beside him.
“Ethan…”
“I thought she left me because she didn’t want me.””
His voice cracked.
Sophia’s heart broke.
“What?””
“My grandma said my mom had a reason.””
He wiped his eyes.
“But I thought maybe she was wrong.””
Sophia reached for his hand.
“I didn’t leave you.””
He looked at her.
“I know.””
The answer surprised her.
“You do?””
He nodded.
“Because if you did, you wouldn’t look this scared.””
Sophia couldn’t speak.
Seven years old.
And he understood more than many adults.
Before she could respond, Marcus rushed into the room.
“Ms. Whitmore.””
She stood.
“What happened?””
Marcus looked at Adrian.
His expression immediately changed.
“You.””
Adrian smiled.
“Hello, Marcus.””
Sophia looked between them.
“You know him?””
Marcus hesitated.
“I worked for your father.””
The room went quiet.
Sophia turned.
“What?””
Marcus looked ashamed.
“Before I worked for you.””
She stared at him.
“How much do you know?””
“Not enough.””
“Try again.””
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“I knew there were problems with the hospital records.””
Sophia felt betrayed.
“You knew?””
“I suspected.””
“And you said nothing?””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
Her voice shook.
“You were protecting a secret.””
Marcus had no answer.
Adrian watched the scene silently.
Then he said:
“This is why you never understood our family.””
Sophia looked at him.
“Because everyone lies?””
Adrian smiled sadly.
“Because everyone chooses who to hurt.””
Suddenly, the lights went out.
The entire house fell into darkness.
Ethan grabbed Sophia’s hand.
A second later, a sound came from upstairs.
A door opening.
Marcus immediately moved.
“Someone is inside.””
Sophia’s heart raced.
She looked toward the hallway.
The house was supposed to be secure.
Only a few people had access.
Then a voice echoed from above.
A child’s voice.
Soft.
Afraid.
“Mom?””
Sophia froze.
Because the voice sounded exactly like Ethan.
But Ethan was standing beside her.
The voice came again.
“Mom, please.””
Everyone looked upstairs.
Adrian’s face changed.
For the first time that night, he looked truly afraid.
Sophia whispered:
“Who is that?””
Nobody answered.
Then the figure appeared at the top of the staircase.
A boy.
Same age.
Same dark hair.
Same eyes.
Ethan looked at him.
The other boy looked back.
And Sophia realized the impossible truth.
The child standing upstairs wasn’t a stranger.
He was the son she had been told never existed.
“Liam…” Adrian whispered.
The boy’s face turned toward Sophia.
May you like
And he said:
“I’ve been waiting ten years for you to find me.””
