Chapter 6: The Son Who Remembered Everything

For ten years, Sophia had dreamed about this moment.

She imagined finding her lost child in a crowded street.

She imagined recognizing him instantly.

She imagined running toward him without hesitation.

But she never imagined standing at the bottom of her staircase, unable to move, while two boys who looked almost identical stared back at her.

One beside her.

One above her.

Both carrying pieces of the truth she had spent a decade searching for.

The boy on the stairs looked smaller than Ethan somehow.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like he had learned too early that the world was not a safe place.

His clothes were clean but plain.

His hands were tucked into the sleeves of his jacket.

And his eyes…

Sophia knew those eyes.

Because she had seen them every morning in the mirror.

“Liam.””

The name escaped her lips before she could stop it.

The boy’s expression changed.

Not surprise.

Not happiness.

Pain.

“You remember.””

Sophia’s breath caught.

“I…”

She didn’t know what to say.

How could she explain to a child that she had remembered him every day without knowing his name?

How could she explain that she had mourned a person she believed no longer existed?

Liam slowly walked down the stairs.

Adrian stepped forward.

“Stop.””

Everyone looked at him.

The fear in his voice was impossible to ignore.

Sophia noticed.

Her brother wasn’t afraid of her.

He wasn’t afraid of the police.

He wasn’t afraid of losing control.

He was afraid of Liam speaking.

“What are you doing here?”” Adrian asked.

The boy looked at him.

“You told me never to come back.””

Sophia’s eyes narrowed.

“You know him.””

Liam looked at her.

“He’s the reason I couldn’t find you.””

Adrian’s face hardened.

“That’s not true.””

Liam ignored him.

“When I was little, I thought you were my father.””

Sophia felt sick.

Adrian.

Her own brother.

“Then why are you calling him by his name?””

The boy looked down.

“Because he stopped acting like family a long time ago.””

The room became silent.

Ethan looked between them.

“Are you my brother?””

Liam looked at him.

For a moment, neither child spoke.

Then Liam nodded.

“Yes.””

Ethan stared.

“How do you know?””

“Because I know things you don’t.””

Sophia immediately stepped forward.

“Enough.””

Both boys looked at her.

She lowered her voice.

“No more secrets.””

Her eyes moved to Adrian.

“Not tonight.””

Adrian laughed quietly.

“You think you can just demand answers?””

Sophia faced him.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She stepped closer.

“Because for ten years, everyone else decided what I was allowed to know.””

Her voice broke.

“My son died because people lied to me.””

She pointed toward Liam.

“Another son disappeared because people lied to me.””

Then toward Ethan.

“And he grew up believing I abandoned him because people lied to me.””

The room was silent.

“I’m done listening to lies.””

For the first time, Adrian had no immediate response.

Sophia turned to Marcus.

“Lock every door.””

Marcus nodded.

“And call no one.””

Sophia looked at him.

“No police.””

Marcus hesitated.

“Ms. Whitmore—”

“If the people behind this have influence, calling for help could put them in danger.””

She looked at both boys.

“I’m not risking that.””

Marcus understood.

He walked away.

Sophia turned back.

“Liam.””

The boy looked at her carefully.

“Tell me everything.””

Liam glanced at Adrian.

Then at Ethan.

“I can.””

Adrian interrupted.

“No, you can’t.””

Sophia’s eyes became cold.

“Try stopping him.””

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Liam walked into the living room.

He sat across from Sophia.

Ethan sat beside him.

Two brothers.

Two lives.

One stolen family.

“When I was born,” Liam began, “I stayed at the hospital.””

Sophia listened carefully.

“My first memory is a woman singing.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

His face tightened.

“She always wore gloves.””

Sophia frowned.

“Gloves?””

Liam nodded.

“She said it was because she worked with medicine.””

A chill moved through Sophia.

“Where did she take you?””

“I don’t know.””

He looked down.

“They moved me a lot.””

“How many places?””

“Six.””

Sophia’s heart hurt.

Six places before he was old enough to understand why.

“What did they tell you?””

“That my mother left.””

Sophia closed her eyes.

The same wound.

Different child.

“They said you chose your career over us.””

Her face changed.

“That’s not true.””

“I know.””

Liam looked at her.

“Because I found your old interviews.””

Sophia was confused.

“What?””

“When I got older, I searched for you.””

Her throat tightened.

“You searched for me?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you contact me?””

Liam looked toward Adrian.

“Because every time I got close, someone stopped me.””

Sophia followed his gaze.

“Who?””

Liam didn’t answer.

He didn’t need to.

The answer was standing in the room.

Adrian looked away.

Sophia felt something inside her break.

“Adrian.””

Her brother remained silent.

“Did you know where he was?””

A long pause.

Then:

“Yes.””

The word was quiet.

But it destroyed everything.

Sophia stared at him.

“You knew.””

“Yes.””

“And you did nothing.””

Adrian’s expression changed.

“You think it was that simple?””

“Yes.””

“No.””

He stepped forward.

“You have no idea what I was dealing with.””

Sophia laughed bitterly.

“I was dealing with losing my child.””

“And I was dealing with keeping you alive.””

The room went still.

Sophia frowned.

“What?””

Adrian looked exhausted.

“The people who took Liam weren’t interested in hurting you.””

“Then what?””

“They were interested in controlling the company.””

Sophia shook her head.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

Adrian looked at Ethan and Liam.

“It does when you understand what your father built.””

Sophia’s patience disappeared.

“Stop talking like everything is some family business meeting.””

Adrian’s eyes hardened.

“Our father created a private network.””

“What network?””

“People with money.””

“That’s vague.””

“People who believed powerful families should stay powerful.””

Sophia stared.

“And my children?””

Adrian said nothing.

That was the answer.

Sophia stepped back.

“You let them use my children.””

Adrian’s voice dropped.

“I tried to stop it.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“You watched.””

“I was twenty-eight.””

“You were my brother.””

“I was trapped.””

Sophia looked at him.

“Everyone says that after they hurt someone.””

The words landed.

Adrian looked away.

Then Liam spoke.

“He’s telling part of the truth.””

Everyone turned.

Liam continued.

“He did try to help me.””

Sophia looked surprised.

“What?””

Liam nodded.

“When I was five, they moved me again.””

“Who?””

“The people watching me.””

“And Adrian?””

“He came to get me.””

Sophia looked at her brother.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Adrian’s face was filled with regret.

“Because I failed.””

“No.””

Sophia’s voice was quiet.

“You chose.””

Adrian didn’t argue.

Because he knew she was right.

Liam looked at Sophia.

“There’s something else.””

“What?””

“My grandmother knew about him.””

Sophia froze.

“Your grandmother?””

“Clara.””

The boy looked at Ethan.

“She helped me escape.””

Ethan looked confused.

“But she raised me.””

Liam nodded.

“She helped both of us.””

Sophia felt dizzy.

Two children.

Two rescuers.

Two stories connected by a secret nobody wanted revealed.

“What secret?””

Liam reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a small envelope.

Sophia recognized it immediately.

Another one.

Her name was written across the front.

Her hands shook as she took it.

“Where did you get this?””

“Clara gave it to me.””

“When?””

“Before she died.””

Sophia opened it.

Inside was a single piece of paper.

Only one sentence.

But it changed everything.

*Sophia, if you are reading this, it means I failed to protect them both.*

Her heart pounded.

She continued reading.

*Your sons were not taken because of your father’s inheritance.*

A pause.

Then the final line.

*They were taken because one of them carries proof that could destroy the Whitmore empire forever.*

Sophia looked up slowly.

“Which one?””

Neither boy answered.

Then the lights flickered.

The security alarm began screaming.

Marcus rushed back into the room.

“Ms. Whitmore.””

His face was pale.

“They’re inside.””

Sophia stood.

“Who?””

Marcus looked toward the front door.

“The people who have been searching for the boys.””

A loud crash echoed from upstairs.

Then a voice came through the house speakers.

A voice Sophia recognized.

Daniel Cross.

“You spent ten years looking for the truth.””

The boys froze.

Daniel continued:

“Now you’re going to learn why we hid it.””

Sophia grabbed Ethan’s hand.

Liam grabbed hers.

And for the first time in ten years, she felt like a mother.

Not a woman who lost her children.

A mother protecting them.

Then Daniel spoke one final sentence.

“Bring me the boy with the birthmark.””

Sophia looked at both sons.

May you like

Because only one of them knew what Daniel was talking about.

And neither child had told her which one.
