Chapter 7: The Secret Marked on His Skin
The alarm screamed through the house.
A sound designed to warn people of danger.
But to Sophia, it sounded like something else.
A reminder.
For ten years, danger had been closer than she ever realized.
It had been in hospital rooms.
Family meetings.
Business decisions.
Even inside the people she trusted most.
She stood in the center of the living room, holding Ethan’s hand with one hand and Liam’s with the other.
Two sons.
Two lives.
Two targets.
“Everyone stay calm,” Marcus said.
But his voice gave him away.
He wasn’t calm.
Sophia noticed.
She noticed everything now.
The fear in Marcus’s eyes.
The silence from Adrian.
The way Liam’s face had changed when Daniel mentioned the birthmark.
She turned slowly.
“Which one of you has it?””
Neither boy answered.
Sophia’s heart sank.
“Liam?””
The boy looked away.
“Ethan?””
The younger boy looked confused.
“I don’t know what he means.””
Sophia looked at Liam.
“You do.””
A long silence followed.
Then Liam whispered:
“Yes.””
Ethan looked at him.
“You have a birthmark?””
Liam nodded.
“On my shoulder.””
Sophia felt a wave of relief.
Then confusion.
“Why would they want you?””
Liam looked toward the hallway.
“Because they think I have something.””
“What?””
“I don’t know.””
Daniel’s voice came again through the speakers.
“Time is running out, Sophia.””
Everyone looked upward.
The house security system had been hacked.
That alone was impossible.
Sophia’s mansion had one of the most advanced private security networks in the city.
Someone powerful was behind this.
Someone prepared.
Daniel continued.
“You always believed your children were victims.””
A pause.
“They weren’t.””
Sophia’s expression changed.
“Don’t listen to him.””
Adrian spoke quietly.
She turned.
“You know something.””
Adrian didn’t deny it.
That was worse.
“What does the birthmark mean?””
He looked at Liam.
Then at Ethan.
Then back at Sophia.
“It means your father chose.””
Sophia felt cold.
“Chose what?””
“Which child would carry the legacy.””
The words made her sick.
“They were babies.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Her voice became sharp.
“You don’t get to say that like you understand.””
Adrian looked away.
“I know because I hated myself for it.””
Sophia stared at him.
For the first time, she heard something real in his voice.
Not excuses.
Not arrogance.
Regret.
But regret did not give her ten years back.
“What did he do?””
Adrian swallowed.
“Our father ordered genetic testing.””
Sophia frowned.
“What?””
“Before the twins were born, he wanted to know everything.””
She stepped back.
“He tested my babies?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Adrian looked at Liam.
“Because one child had a rare genetic marker.””
Sophia felt her stomach drop.
“And?””
“That marker was connected to an old family trust.””
She almost laughed.
A painful, disbelieving laugh.
“You’re telling me people kidnapped my children over paperwork?””
“No.””
Adrian’s face darkened.
“They kidnapped them because the trust wasn’t just money.””
“What was it?””
“A record.””
“Of what?””
Adrian looked toward the hidden speakers.
“Everything.””
The house became silent.
Sophia understood.
Not completely.
But enough.
Someone wasn’t protecting wealth.
Someone was protecting secrets.
Daniel spoke again.
“Adrian.””
Everyone froze.
Daniel knew he was listening.
“You always were the weakest link.””
Adrian’s expression changed.
“Shut up.””
Sophia looked between them.
“You worked together.””
“No.””
Adrian’s answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
Daniel laughed.
“Still pretending?””
The speakers crackled.
“Tell her what happened the night her sons disappeared.””
Adrian said nothing.
Sophia stepped closer.
“Tell me.””
Adrian closed his eyes.
For a moment, he looked like the brother she remembered.
The one who taught her how to ride a bicycle.
The one who stayed awake when she had nightmares.
Then he opened his eyes.
And she saw the weight of ten years.
“I was there.””
Sophia stopped.
“At the hospital?””
He nodded.
Her chest tightened.
“You watched.””
“I tried to stop them.””
“You watched.””
Her voice broke.
“You watched them take my babies.””
“I was trying to find a way.””
“A way?””
She stared at him.
“My sons were gone.””
Adrian looked down.
“I made a mistake.””
Sophia shook her head.
“No.””
The word was quiet.
But final.
“You made a choice.””
Before Adrian could respond, the sound of glass breaking came from the west side of the house.
Marcus immediately moved.
“They’re in.””
Sophia grabbed both boys.
“Where do we go?””
Marcus looked toward the basement.
“There’s an old safe room.””
Adrian shook his head.
“They know about it.””
Everyone looked at him.
Sophia’s eyes narrowed.
“How?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
“Adrian.””
He looked at her.
“They built this house.””
The realization hit her.
Her father’s company.
Her family’s money.
Her home.
None of it had ever truly belonged to her.
The walls around her had been built by the same people who destroyed her life.
Another crash.
Closer.
Marcus pulled a weapon from his jacket.
Sophia noticed.
“You carry that?””
“I’ve been expecting this day.””
She stared.
“You knew they would come?””
“Yes.””
“And you still stayed?””
Marcus looked at her.
“I owed your mother a promise.””
Sophia frowned.
“My mother?””
Marcus looked away.
Before she could ask, footsteps echoed from the hallway.
Slow.
Calm.
Confident.
Someone wasn’t rushing.
Someone knew they had already won.
Daniel appeared at the entrance.
No mask.
No disguise.
Just the same cold expression.
Behind him stood four men.
Sophia moved the boys behind her.
Daniel looked almost disappointed.
“Still protecting them.””
“Yes.””
“You don’t understand what they are.””
Sophia’s eyes narrowed.
“They’re children.””
Daniel smiled.
“That’s what makes them valuable.””
The anger inside her became something sharper.
“You stole children.””
“We preserved something important.””
“You destroyed lives.””
Daniel tilted his head.
“History always looks different depending on who writes it.””
Sophia stepped forward.
“You’re done.””
Daniel smiled.
“Are you sure?””
He looked at Liam.
Then Ethan.
“Ask them.””
The boys looked confused.
“Ask them what?””
Daniel pointed toward Sophia.
“Ask your mother why she never remembered giving birth to twins.””
Sophia froze.
Because that was the question she had been avoiding.
The one she was afraid to ask.
“How?””
Daniel smiled.
“Because she didn’t.””
Everyone went silent.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel looked at Adrian.
“Tell her.””
Adrian’s face turned pale.
Sophia looked at him.
“Tell me.””
He didn’t speak.
“Adrian.””
Finally, he whispered:
“The doctors didn’t tell you about the second baby because…”
He stopped.
Sophia’s heart pounded.
“Because what?””
Adrian looked at Liam.
Then at Ethan.
“Because you were awake when they took the first child.””
Sophia felt the room spin.
“No.””
Adrian continued.
“You saw him.””
Her breathing stopped.
“You held Liam.””
The words broke something inside her.
“No.””
“You held him for three minutes.””
Sophia shook her head.
“No.””
“You named him.””
The photograph slipped from her hand.
“No…”
Adrian’s voice cracked.
“You named him Liam.””
A memory exploded in her mind.
A baby crying.
A nurse whispering.
Two tiny hands.
A face she could never remember clearly.
Then darkness.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Your mind buried that night.””
Sophia looked at him.
“Why?””
Daniel’s answer was quiet.
“Because someone made sure you would.””
She stared.
“Who?””
Nobody spoke.
Then Ethan looked up at Sophia.
“Mom?””
She turned.
His face was filled with fear.
“Are you okay?””
Sophia wanted to answer.
She wanted to tell him everything would be okay.
But she couldn’t.
Because for the first time, she understood the true horror.
She had not simply lost her sons.
Someone had stolen the memory of losing them.
Daniel smiled.
“Now you understand.””
Sophia looked at him.
“What do you want?””
Daniel stepped forward.
“The truth.””
She laughed bitterly.
“You’re the one hiding it.””
“No.””
He looked at Liam.
“He is.””
Everyone turned.
Liam went pale.
Sophia’s heart dropped.
“Liam?””
The boy stepped backward.
“I didn’t want to.””
Daniel smiled.
“Tell her.””
Sophia looked at her son.
“What is he talking about?””
Liam’s eyes filled with tears.
Then he slowly reached behind his collar.
He pulled the fabric aside.
A small mark was visible on his shoulder.
A birthmark.
But beneath it was something else.
A thin scar.
Sophia stared.
Because she recognized the shape.
It wasn’t a random mark.
It was a symbol.
A symbol from the family documents she had seen as a child.
The Whitmore crest.
Liam whispered:
“They didn’t just mark me.””
Sophia’s voice trembled.
“What did they do?””
The boy looked at her.
“They put the evidence inside me.””
And before anyone could react, Daniel said:
“Now you know why we came.””
He raised his hand.
The men behind him moved.
“Take Liam.””
Sophia tightened her grip on both boys.
“No.””
Daniel looked at her.
“You can’t protect a secret forever.””
Sophia stared back.
For ten years, she had been powerless.
Not anymore.
She pulled Ethan and Liam behind her.
May you like
And said the words that changed everything:
“Then you’ll have to go through me first.””
