Chapter 8: The Truth Hidden Beneath the Scar

Sophia had spent ten years believing she was powerless.

She had believed the hospital had taken her son.

She had believed fate had taken her son.

She had believed there was nothing she could do except build a life around the empty space he left behind.

But standing in front of Daniel Cross, with Ethan and Liam behind her, she finally understood something.

The people who stole her children had counted on one thing.

They counted on her staying broken.

They were wrong.

Daniel watched her carefully.

“Move aside, Sophia.””

She didn’t.

“You came into my house.””

Her voice was calm.

“You threatened my children.””

The men behind Daniel shifted.

“You don’t walk out with anyone.””

Daniel almost smiled.

“You still think this is about strength.””

“No.””

Sophia looked at Liam.

Then Ethan.

“It’s about what you underestimated.””

Daniel tilted his head.

“And what is that?””

“My reason to fight.””

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Marcus stepped beside her.

“Ms. Whitmore.””

Sophia looked at him.

“Get the boys somewhere safe.””

Marcus nodded.

Adrian immediately stepped forward.

“I know another way out.””

Sophia turned sharply.

“You expect me to trust you?””

Adrian accepted the anger in her eyes.

“No.””

A pause.

“But you should trust that I know this house better than they do.””

Daniel laughed quietly.

“Still trying to be the hero, Adrian?””

Adrian looked at him.

“No.””

His voice was different.

“I’m trying to fix what I broke.””

Sophia wanted to hate him.

She did.

But she also saw the truth.

The guilt.

The exhaustion.

The man who had spent ten years carrying a secret that destroyed everyone around him.

“Why now?”” she asked.

Adrian looked at Liam.

“Because I saw him again.””

His voice became softer.

“And I remembered what I was supposed to protect.””

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You’re making a mistake.””

Adrian looked back.

“No.””

He stepped toward Sophia.

“I made that mistake ten years ago.””

A sudden noise came from the hallway.

One of Daniel’s men moved.

Marcus reacted immediately.

He pushed Sophia and the boys aside as the man rushed forward.

The room exploded into chaos.

Sophia grabbed Ethan and Liam.

“Run.””

They moved toward the hidden passage Adrian had mentioned.

Behind them, voices echoed.

Footsteps.

Commands.

But Sophia didn’t look back.

Not this time.

She had spent years looking backward.

At the hospital.

At the empty crib.

At the life she lost.

Now she looked forward.

The passage was narrow and dark.

The walls were old stone.

Sophia held Liam’s hand.

Ethan held her coat.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Ethan whispered:

“Is he really my brother?””

Sophia looked at him.

“Yes.””

The boy looked at Liam.

“You knew?””

Liam shook his head.

“I knew I had a brother.””

Ethan’s eyes widened.

“But not me.””

“No.””

Liam looked guilty.

“I didn’t know who.””

Ethan looked down.

“That’s weird.””

“What is?””

“I spent my whole life thinking I had no family.””

He looked at Liam.

“And you spent yours knowing you had one.””

Liam didn’t answer.

Sophia felt the sadness between them.

Two children who should have grown up together.

Two brothers who should have shared birthdays.

Two lives stolen.

She stopped walking.

Both boys looked at her.

“I need you to hear something.””

They waited.

“None of this was your fault.””

Liam looked away.

“They told me you didn’t want me.””

Sophia’s heart broke.

“I wanted you every day.””

His eyes lifted.

“Every day?””

“Yes.””

She swallowed.

“I had a room for you.””

Liam looked surprised.

“What?””

“I never changed it.””

She smiled sadly.

“I thought maybe one day…”

Her voice broke.

“Maybe one day I would bring you home.””

Liam’s expression changed.

Not completely.

Ten years of pain could not disappear in one conversation.

But something softened.

A door opened.

A little.

Then Ethan reached over.

He grabbed Liam’s hand.

The older boy looked surprised.

“We can share a room.””

Sophia almost cried.

Liam gave a small smile.

“Okay.””

For a moment, they were just two brothers.

Not evidence.

Not secrets.

Not targets.

Just children.

Then they reached the end of the passage.

Adrian was waiting.

Sophia stopped.

“You’re alone.””

“Yes.””

“Where is Marcus?””

“Keeping them busy.””

Sophia looked past him.

“Can we trust this exit?””

Adrian nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He looked at her.

“Because I built it.””

She almost laughed.

“Of course you did.””

The old Adrian would have responded with arrogance.

This Adrian didn’t.

He simply opened the door.

They stepped into an underground room.

It was filled with old boxes.

Documents.

Photographs.

Records.

Sophia looked around.

“What is this?””

Adrian closed the door.

“This is where our father kept everything.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“You knew?””

“I found it after he died.””

“And you hid it.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Adrian looked at Liam.

“Because I was afraid.””

Sophia waited.

“Of what?””

“The truth.””

He walked toward a table.

There was a large file sitting there.

The Whitmore family crest was stamped on it.

Sophia picked it up.

Inside were medical records.

Legal documents.

Photographs.

Everything.

Her hands shook.

“Where did this come from?””

“Your father.””

She opened the first page.

Then stopped.

Because she saw her own name.

*Sophia Whitmore — Twin Pregnancy Evaluation.*

Below it were notes.

Medical observations.

Private instructions.

Her face turned pale.

“They monitored me.””

“Yes.””

“Before I gave birth.””

“Yes.””

She turned another page.

Then another.

Every page felt like a knife.

Someone had tracked her pregnancy.

Her health.

Her children.

Everything.

Then she found the document.

The one that made her stop breathing.

*Transfer Authorization.*

Two newborn children.

Two signatures.

One was her father’s.

The other was Adrian’s.

Sophia looked up.

“You signed this.””

Adrian didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

The anger came back instantly.

“You signed away my children.””

“I thought I was saving them.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You chose.””

Adrian closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more.

Sophia looked at the documents again.

Then she noticed something.

A name.

A name she didn’t recognize.

“What is this?””

Adrian looked.

His face changed.

“That shouldn’t be here.””

Sophia read it aloud.

“Evelyn Black.””

Liam went still.

Sophia noticed.

“You know that name.””

The boy’s face became pale.

“She was the woman with gloves.””

Everyone looked at him.

Sophia stepped closer.

“Who is she?””

Liam whispered:

“She told me she was protecting me.””

Adrian looked terrified.

“No.””

“What?””

Adrian stared at the name.

“She was the one person our father feared.””

Sophia frowned.

“Why?””

Adrian’s voice lowered.

“Because she knew everything.””

The lights in the underground room flickered.

Everyone froze.

Then a small sound came from the speaker above them.

A woman’s voice.

Calm.

Almost gentle.

“Adrian.””

He looked up.

His face went white.

“No.””

Sophia recognized the fear immediately.

“Who is that?””

Adrian whispered:

“Evelyn.””

The woman continued.

“I knew you would eventually open the archive.””

Sophia looked around.

“How is she here?””

Adrian didn’t answer.

The speaker crackled.

Then Evelyn spoke again.

“Sophia.””

Hearing her own name from a stranger made her skin crawl.

“You have spent ten years believing I stole your children.””

Sophia stared at the speaker.

“What do you want?””

A pause.

Then:

“I want you to understand that I was the only person trying to save them.””

Sophia laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

“I know.””

The voice became quieter.

“That’s why you won’t believe me.””

The screen on the wall suddenly turned on.

A video appeared.

A hospital room.

Ten years ago.

Sophia’s heart stopped.

Because she saw herself.

Young.

Exhausted.

Holding a baby.

But then the camera angle changed.

A nurse entered.

And behind her…

A second baby.

Sophia whispered:

“No…”

The video continued.

The nurse placed the second baby beside her.

Young Sophia smiled.

She touched the baby’s face.

And then she said something that made the entire room freeze.

“I’ll name him Liam.””

The screen went black.

Sophia stood motionless.

Because for ten years, she thought she forgot her son.

But the truth was worse.

She remembered.

Someone had taken the memory away.

Then Evelyn’s voice came one final time.

“And now, Sophia…”

May you like

A pause.

“Ask yourself why you forgot.””
