Chapter 11: The Son Who Was Buried Twice
Eleanor drove us to an old lakeside property that belonged to her family.
It was a small house, far from the Whitmore mansion and the city hotels.
There were no employees.
No security guards.
No cameras.
Just an old wooden porch and a garden that had grown wild.
Once we were inside, Eleanor locked the doors.
Daniel placed Lily in a travel crib.
I sat at the kitchen table, staring at the birth bracelet.
Lily Bell.
Three names.
Three children.
Three lives connected by a secret that had been hidden for decades.
Eleanor placed a cup of tea in front of me.
"Tell me everything Margaret said.""
I repeated the phone conversation.
When I mentioned Alexander, Eleanor sat down.
Her eyes filled with tears.
"Richard spent twenty-six years believing our son had died.""
"Could Margaret be mistaken?""
"I don't think so.""
She reached into a cabinet and removed a small wooden box.
Inside were photographs, hospital documents, and a tiny silver star bracelet.
The same design as the one in Thomas's photograph.
Eleanor held it against her palm.
"This belonged to Alexander. He was wearing it when the hospital told us he had died.""
I examined the clasp.
There were three small letters engraved inside.
A.W.C.
"Why did you keep it?""
"Because I couldn't accept that he was gone.""
She opened a folded hospital document.
It was a death certificate.
Alexander Whitmore.
Age: seven months.
Cause of death: respiratory complications.
I looked at the date.
Then I looked at the photograph of Thomas.
"Could Thomas be Alexander?""
Eleanor nodded.
"Richard said the babies were switched.""
Daniel joined us.
"Then where is the other child?""
Eleanor's expression changed.
"That's what we need to discover.""
My phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from Margaret.
*The man you knew as Thomas is actually Alexander. His records were changed after Victor took him from St. Agnes.*
A second message followed.
*But there is something you must understand. Alexander has been told that his family abandoned him. He may not believe you.*
I read the message aloud.
Eleanor covered her mouth.
"He thinks we abandoned him?""
I nodded.
She began crying.
"I searched for him. I searched everywhere.""
I took her hand.
"Then we'll find him.""
Margaret sent another message.
An address.
A private rehabilitation facility called Westbridge Recovery Center.
There was a name beneath it.
*Thomas Bell — Resident 214.*
Daniel looked at me.
"That's the same room number.""
I nodded.
The coincidence was too precise.
We left immediately.
The facility stood outside the city, surrounded by high fences and a row of security cameras.
A receptionist greeted us.
"Good afternoon. Can I help you?""
I placed the photograph of Thomas on the counter.
"I'm looking for this young man.""
She studied it.
"Do you have his resident number?""
"Two hundred and fourteen.""
She checked the computer.
Her expression changed.
"He's not accepting visitors.""
Eleanor stepped forward.
"I'm his mother.""
The receptionist looked at her.
"I'm sorry, but Mr. Bell's file has restricted access.""
"Who restricted it?""
"His legal guardian.""
"Who?""
The receptionist hesitated.
Then she said:
"Mr. Victor Whitmore.""
I felt my stomach tighten.
"Victor is his guardian?""
She nodded.
"He has paid for the resident's care for many years.""
Eleanor looked as if she might faint.
"Take us to him.""
"I'm afraid I can't.""
Eleanor placed her identification on the counter.
"Do you recognize this name?""
The receptionist read it.
Her expression changed.
"Mrs. Whitmore?""
"Yes.""
She lowered her voice.
"Please wait here.""
She disappeared into a back office.
Daniel leaned toward me.
"This is getting dangerous.""
I looked at him.
"He's my brother.""
"And Victor knows we're here.""
A door opened behind the reception desk.
A young man stepped into the hallway.
He was tall and thin, wearing a gray sweatshirt.
His hair was dark.
A small scar ran above his left eyebrow.
I stopped breathing.
It was the same scar I had.
He looked at Eleanor.
Then at me.
His eyes narrowed.
"Who are you?""
Eleanor stood slowly.
"Alexander?""
The young man's expression hardened.
"My name is Thomas.""
She took one step toward him.
"Sweetheart...""
"Don't call me that.""
His voice was sharp.
I approached carefully.
"I'm Emily.""
He looked at me.
For a moment, something flickered across his face.
Then he laughed bitterly.
"Of course you are.""
I frowned.
"What does that mean?""
"Victor told me you might come.""
Eleanor's face went pale.
"What did he tell you?""
Thomas folded his arms.
"He told me my real family was dead. He said they were ashamed of me.""
"That's not true!""
"He said my mother abandoned me because I wasn't worth keeping.""
Eleanor began crying.
"Alexander, I never abandoned you.""
He stepped backward.
"Stop lying.""
I pulled the photograph from my bag.
It showed Margaret holding three children.
"Do you recognize this woman?""
Thomas stared at it.
His expression changed.
"Where did you get that?""
"From Margaret.""
His eyes filled with tears.
"She's alive?""
I nodded.
He looked away.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then he whispered:
"She told me never to trust Victor.""
Eleanor reached toward him.
But he moved away.
"Don't touch me.""
She lowered her hand.
"I'm sorry.""
Thomas looked at me again.
"Why are you here?""
"Because Lily is in danger.""
His face changed immediately.
"Who's Lily?""
"My daughter.""
Thomas went completely still.
Then he looked at the silver bracelet in my hand.
The star charm.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out an identical bracelet.
"I've had this since I was a baby.""
He turned it over.
The initials A.W.C. were engraved inside.
Eleanor broke down.
"My son.""
Thomas stared at the bracelet.
Then he looked at the photograph again.
"Wait.""
He pointed toward the baby in Margaret's arms.
"Who's that?""
I swallowed.
"Margaret said she had another child.""
Thomas shook his head.
"No. That's not what I mean.""
He looked at the photograph more carefully.
Then he pointed at the tiny bracelet around the baby's wrist.
It was engraved with a name.
*LILY.*
My daughter had been named before she was born.
Thomas looked at me.
"Emily, Victor knows something about Lily that none of you understand.""
Before I could answer, a security guard appeared.
"Mr. Bell, you have a visitor.""
Thomas turned.
A familiar voice came from the hallway.
"Hello, son.""
Victor Whitmore stepped into the room.
And he wasn't alone.
Behind him stood a woman I had never seen before.
She was holding a folder.
May you like
Victor smiled.
"Now that everyone is finally together, I think it's time we discussed the truth about who really gave birth to whom.""
