Chapter 13: The Twin Who Came Back From the Dead
The young man standing in the doorway looked exactly like me.
Not similar.
Not vaguely familiar.
Exactly like me.
The same dark eyes. The same shape of the mouth. The same small crescent-shaped scar above the left eyebrow.
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
He looked at me with an expression I couldn't understand.
There was anger in his eyes.
But beneath it was something else.
Pain.
"Emily," he said again.
I took a step backward.
"Who are you?""
He looked down at the photograph in his hand.
"My name is Alexander Bell.""
Victor laughed.
"Don't be ridiculous. You're Alexander Whitmore.""
The young man turned toward him.
"That's the name you gave me after you stole my life.""
Victor's expression hardened.
"Watch your mouth.""
Alexander walked into the room.
"Twenty-two years, Victor. Twenty-two years of pretending I didn't exist.""
He placed the hospital record on the table.
"I thought you were going to keep the truth buried forever.""
Thomas stared at him.
"Are you really my brother?""
Alexander looked at Thomas.
For the first time, his expression softened.
"Yes.""
Thomas shook his head.
"Then why didn't you come looking for me?""
"I tried.""
"When?""
"Every year.""
Thomas laughed bitterly.
"That's convenient.""
Alexander didn't argue.
Instead, he reached into his jacket and removed a small photograph.
It showed three children sitting on a blanket in a garden.
One was me.
One was Thomas.
And the third was Alexander.
I stared at the picture.
"Where did you get that?""
"Margaret gave it to me.""
My heart tightened.
"Have you seen her?""
He nodded.
"She's alive.""
I grabbed his arm.
"Where is she?""
"Safe. For now.""
"Why didn't she come to me?""
"Because Victor has been watching you since you were a child.""
I turned toward Victor.
He was standing beside Dr. Hayes, his face expressionless.
"You're making accusations without evidence," he said.
Alexander smiled.
"Actually, I brought evidence.""
He opened a black folder.
Inside were bank statements, hospital records, photographs, and a collection of handwritten letters.
He placed the first document in front of Eleanor.
"Do you recognize this signature?""
She looked down.
Richard Whitmore.
Her hands began trembling.
"This is a transfer authorization.""
Alexander nodded.
"Twenty-two years ago, Victor moved money from the family trust into an account belonging to Margaret Bell.""
Victor interrupted.
"Those were legitimate payments.""
"Some were. Others were payments to doctors, administrators, and private investigators.""
Alexander placed another document beside it.
"This is the original hospital report. The one Dr. Hayes altered.""
Dr. Hayes stepped backward.
"That's impossible.""
Alexander turned toward her.
"Would you like me to read your handwriting?""
The doctor said nothing.
Alexander opened the report.
"At 11:42 p.m., Margaret Bell delivered twin babies. A girl and a boy. Both were healthy.""
He pointed to the next line.
"At 12:18 a.m., Eleanor Whitmore delivered a premature boy. He survived.""
Eleanor covered her mouth.
Alexander continued.
"Three babies. Three different birth records. But Victor arranged for the hospital to report that only two had survived.""
Thomas looked sick.
"So what happened to the third baby?""
Alexander looked at him.
"That was me.""
He turned toward me.
"Margaret was my mother, too.""
I felt tears gathering in my eyes.
"Then why were you separated from us?""
"Because Victor needed control of the Whitmore inheritance.""
He explained that the family trust had been designed to protect Richard's children.
If all the children were alive and properly identified, Victor would lose control over a significant portion of the estate.
But if the children were declared dead, missing, or legally unrelated to the family, he could control the money through a series of guardianship arrangements.
"Your father discovered the scheme," Alexander said.
I looked at him.
"Richard?""
He nodded.
"That's why he wrote the letter. He wanted to tell you everything.""
"Then why did he say Victor had taken me?""
"Because Victor did take you.""
Alexander's voice became harder.
"But not the way you think.""
He explained that Margaret had been working with Richard to expose Victor's financial crimes.
The night I disappeared, Margaret received a warning that Victor planned to have me moved to another country.
She took me and fled.
But Victor caught up with them near the church.
He managed to separate us.
Margaret escaped with Alexander, while I was left with a woman who had been paid to deliver me to a different location.
That woman abandoned me outside the church when the police began searching the area.
"Margaret searched for you," Alexander said.
"She never stopped.""
I wiped my tears.
"Why didn't she find me?""
"Because Victor destroyed the records.""
He placed another document on the table.
It was a police report.
A handwritten note appeared at the bottom.
*Child recovered. Identity unknown. Transferred to state care.*
I stared at it.
For twenty-two years, I had been listed as unidentified.
I had been right there.
And the man responsible had known exactly where to look.
Victor finally spoke.
"This is a touching story. Unfortunately, none of it changes the fact that you have no authority here.""
Alexander looked at him.
"That's where you're wrong.""
He removed a small recording device from his pocket.
"Everything you've said today has been recorded.""
Victor's face changed.
Dr. Hayes looked toward the exit.
Alexander noticed.
"Don't bother running, Doctor.""
He placed another document on the table.
"Your signed confession is already with the authorities.""
The doctor began crying.
Victor lunged toward the folder.
But Thomas stepped in front of him.
"Don't touch it.""
For the first time, Victor looked uncertain.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
And slowly smiled.
"Well," he said, looking at me.
"It seems your little family reunion is about to become much more complicated.""
He ended the call.
"Your daughter has disappeared.""
My blood turned to ice.
"Where is Lily?""
Victor adjusted his jacket.
"Ask the man who took her.""
He pointed toward Daniel.
I turned.
Daniel was standing beside the door.
His face was pale.
And in his hand was Lily's pink blanket.
"Daniel?""
He couldn't meet my eyes.
May you like
Then he whispered:
"Emily, I can explain.""
