Chapter 3: The Secret Buried in My Birth Certificate

Eleanor refused to explain anything until the hotel security team had checked the corridor.

That alone frightened me.

A woman who had spent twenty-two years searching for her missing daughter shouldn't have been terrified of a text message.

Unless the message was true.

Daniel sat beside me, holding Lily against his chest.

"Emily, we're leaving," he said.

Eleanor turned toward him.

"Please don't. I promise I'll explain.""

"You've already given us three different stories in less than an hour.""

"I haven't lied.""

"Then explain the message.""

Eleanor looked down at the phone.

"I don't know who sent it.""

"That's not an explanation.""

She pressed her fingers against her forehead.

"Margaret Bell was never officially charged with kidnapping. The police couldn't prove she had taken Emily. But three months after the disappearance, we received a letter.""

"What did it say?"" I asked.

"That our daughter was dead.""

My stomach tightened.

"Who sent it?""

"We never knew. It was delivered without a return address. There was a photograph inside.""

"What photograph?""

Eleanor opened her handbag and removed a small envelope.

She had kept it.

Inside was a photograph of a child's pink shoe lying in the mud beside a river.

I stared at it.

"Was that mine?""

Eleanor nodded.

"It was the shoe you wore the day you disappeared.""

Daniel looked horrified.

"So you assumed she had drowned?""

"The police searched the river. They found nothing. But Richard..."" Eleanor stopped.

"What about him?""

"Richard believed Margaret had killed you.""

"Why?""

"Because he received another letter. It claimed Margaret had been seen pushing a child into a car near the river.""

I felt sick.

"Then why does the message say my father paid someone to declare me dead?""

Eleanor closed her eyes.

"Because Richard eventually signed a death declaration.""

Silence filled the room.

I looked at her.

"He declared his own daughter dead?""

"He was broken. He hadn't slept properly in months. His business was collapsing, and every day he expected another terrible phone call.""

"That's not an answer.""

"I know.""

Her voice cracked.

"He was told that the evidence was conclusive. He believed there was no hope.""

I looked down at Lily.

I couldn't imagine receiving news that she was gone.

But I also couldn't imagine giving up.

"Who told him?"" I asked.

Eleanor hesitated.

"My brother.""

"Your brother?""

"Victor Whitmore. He managed our family business while Richard was overseas.""

Daniel immediately recognized the name.

"Victor Whitmore is the chairman of the company now.""

Eleanor nodded.

"He took control after Richard's stroke.""

The room suddenly felt smaller.

I remembered seeing Victor's face on the hotel's promotional posters. A silver-haired man with an expensive watch and a smile that looked practiced.

"Why would he do that?"" I asked.

"Victor always believed the company should belong to him. He thought Richard was too sentimental. He disliked how much attention Richard gave to you.""

"She was four years old," Daniel said sharply.

"I know.""

Eleanor wiped her eyes.

"He used to say that children made people weak.""

I looked at the message again.

"Did Victor know Margaret?""

"Yes. He was the person who recommended her for the job.""

My pulse quickened.

"Then perhaps he's the one who sent this.""

Eleanor shook her head.

"Victor would never risk sending something like that.""

"How do you know?""

"Because he's been telling everyone for years that the past should remain buried.""

A knock sounded at the door.

Everyone froze.

A hotel security officer entered.

"Mrs. Whitmore, I'm sorry to interrupt. There's someone downstairs asking to see you.""

"Who?""

The officer glanced at me.

"Mr. Victor Whitmore.""

Eleanor's face tightened.

"Tell him I'm unavailable.""

"He says it's urgent. He also says he knows why Miss Carter is here.""

Daniel stood.

"How does he know about Emily?""

Eleanor didn't answer.

Instead, she walked to the door and spoke quietly to the officer.

"Tell him I will meet him downstairs.""

The officer left.

I stood immediately.

"You're not going alone.""

Eleanor looked at me.

"Emily, you don't understand the kind of man my brother is.""

"Then explain it.""

She looked as though she wanted to say something, but the door opened before she could.

Victor Whitmore entered without knocking.

He was tall, neatly dressed, and carried a leather folder under one arm.

His eyes moved from Eleanor to Daniel.

Then they stopped on me.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he smiled.

"Well," he said.

"This is unexpected.""

Eleanor stepped between us.

"Victor, you need to leave.""

He ignored her.

"So this is the young woman?""

I stared at him.

"Do you know who I am?""

Victor placed his folder on the table.

"Emily Carter. Twenty-six years old. Raised in foster care. Currently living with a hotel employee and raising a daughter.""

My blood ran cold.

"How do you know all that?""

He opened the folder.

"Because I had someone investigate you the moment I heard about the bracelet.""

Daniel moved closer to me.

"Why would you investigate her?""

Victor smiled without warmth.

"Because family matters can become complicated when money is involved.""

Eleanor slapped her palm against the table.

"Don't you dare.""

Victor looked at her.

"You're making a mistake, Eleanor.""

"She's my daughter.""

"Are you certain?""

The question hung in the air.

Victor removed a document from the folder.

It was a copy of an old birth certificate.

My name appeared at the top.

Emily Whitmore Carter.

But beneath it was a handwritten note.

*Child presumed deceased. Case closed.*

I stared at the signature.

Richard Whitmore.

My father.

Victor tapped the paper.

"Your biological father signed this document twenty-two years ago. He accepted that you were dead.""

"He was told she was dead," Eleanor said.

Victor shrugged.

"That's a distinction without a difference.""

I took a step toward him.

"Why are you showing me this?""

He opened the folder again and removed another photograph.

It showed a younger woman standing beside a little girl outside a church.

The little girl was wearing my bracelet.

The woman was Margaret Bell.

I recognized her from the faded photographs Eleanor had shown me.

Victor placed the picture on the table.

"Your mother has spent twenty-two years telling herself that Margaret kidnapped you.""

He leaned closer.

"But there's a reason Margaret took you to that church.""

"What reason?""

Victor looked directly into my eyes.

"Because she was trying to save you from your own father.""

Eleanor gasped.

"Victor, stop!""

He ignored her.

Then he slid one final document across the table.

It was a hospital record dated three days before I disappeared.

The patient's name was Margaret Bell.

The father's name listed on the form was Richard Whitmore.

I stared at the paper.

Daniel's arms tightened around Lily.

Eleanor covered her mouth.

And Victor whispered the words that shattered everything I thought I knew.

"Margaret wasn't just your nanny, Emily.""

May you like

He paused.

"She was your biological mother.""
