Chapter 14: The Man Who Raised My Daughter

I had trusted Daniel with everything.

My fears.

My secrets.

My daughter.

And now he was standing in front of me holding Lily's blanket while Victor Whitmore smiled like a man who had just won a game.

"Where is my daughter?"" I demanded.

Daniel looked devastated.

"She's safe.""

"Where?""

"I had to move her.""

"Why?""

He looked toward Victor.

"Because he was going to take her.""

I stepped closer.

"You could have told me.""

"I couldn't.""

Victor laughed.

"How touching. The devoted father finally reveals himself.""

Daniel turned toward him.

"Shut up.""

Victor opened his folder.

"Daniel has been working for me for months.""

The room went silent.

I looked at Daniel.

"No.""

He closed his eyes.

"Emily...""

"No. Tell him he's lying.""

Daniel's shoulders dropped.

"I was paid to keep an eye on you.""

I felt something inside me break.

"Since when?""

"Before Lily was born.""

I stared at him.

He continued.

"Victor approached me after Alexander disappeared. He told me someone was looking for you. He offered me money to report anyone who contacted you.""

"Did you take it?""

Daniel nodded.

"Yes.""

I slapped him.

The sound echoed through the room.

"How could you?""

He didn't defend himself.

"I needed money. My mother was sick. I was behind on rent. Victor offered enough to pay everything.""

"So you sold information about me?""

"I thought it would be temporary.""

"And then?""

Daniel looked at Lily's blanket.

"Then I fell in love with you.""

I shook my head.

"You don't get to use that as an excuse.""

"I know.""

Victor stepped forward.

"Daniel was useful. He told me when you visited the hotel, when you changed apartments, and when you gave birth.""

I felt sick.

"Did you arrange the photograph inside our apartment?""

Victor smiled.

"Of course.""

Daniel turned toward him.

"You said nobody would touch the baby.""

Victor's expression hardened.

"Don't forget who paid you.""

Daniel looked at him with disgust.

"You're a monster.""

"Yet you accepted my money.""

I stepped between them.

"Where is Lily?""

Daniel took a breath.

"At the old lakeside property. The same house Eleanor brought us to.""

Eleanor immediately reached for her phone.

"Then we need to go.""

Victor shook his head.

"You're all making this unnecessarily difficult.""

Alexander moved toward him.

"You're finished.""

Victor laughed.

"You think a few documents will destroy me? I've spent twenty-two years building this company.""

Alexander pulled out his phone.

"The police have the original records, the financial transfers, and your confession.""

Victor's smile faded.

Then he looked at Dr. Hayes.

"Tell them.""

The doctor shook her head.

"No.""

Victor's voice became louder.

"Tell them what you did.""

Dr. Hayes began crying.

"I changed the records.""

Eleanor stared at her.

"Why?""

"Victor threatened my family.""

The doctor explained that Victor had discovered Richard's plan to expose the hospital switch.

He had forced her to alter the medical records and create false death certificates.

When Margaret tried to expose him, Victor arranged for her to be accused of kidnapping.

"And the baby?"" I asked.

Dr. Hayes looked at me.

"Victor took Alexander from the hospital and gave him to another family under a false identity.""

Alexander nodded.

"I was raised by people who believed I was abandoned. When they died, I started investigating my past.""

"How did you find Margaret?""

"She found me first.""

He looked at Victor.

"She had kept copies of everything.""

Victor suddenly reached into his jacket.

Samuel, who had been standing near the doorway, shouted.

"Don't move!""

Two police officers entered the room.

Victor froze.

One officer approached him.

"Victor Whitmore, you're under arrest for fraud, kidnapping, falsification of medical records, and conspiracy.""

Victor looked around.

Then he laughed.

"You have no idea what you're doing.""

The officer took his wrists.

"You can explain that at the station.""

Victor turned toward me.

"Emily, remember this. Your family is built on lies. You think these people love you? They're all hiding something.""

I looked at Eleanor.

Then at Alexander.

Then at Thomas.

Finally, I looked at Daniel.

"Maybe they are. But I won't let you use those secrets to hurt my daughter anymore.""

The officers led Victor away.

Dr. Hayes agreed to cooperate with the investigation.

Samuel approached us.

"He's been arrested, but we still need to secure Lily.""

We left immediately.

The drive to the lakeside house felt endless.

I sat in the back seat, staring at Daniel.

He hadn't spoken since Victor was taken away.

Finally, I asked:

"Why didn't you tell me about the money?""

He looked at me.

"Because I was ashamed.""

"You should have been.""

He nodded.

"I know.""

"Did you ever love Lily?""

His eyes filled.

"Every second of every day.""

"Even when you knew she wasn't biologically yours?""

"Especially then.""

He wiped his face.

"Emily, I may have lied about how everything started. But nothing about the way I loved you or Lily was fake.""

I looked away.

I didn't know whether I could forgive him.

But I knew that Lily deserved the truth.

When we reached the house, Eleanor was already running toward the front door.

"Emily!""

I hurried inside.

The living room was empty.

The travel crib stood near the sofa.

Lily wasn't there.

My heart stopped.

"Where is she?""

A sound came from upstairs.

A baby crying.

I ran toward the staircase.

The bedroom door was open.

And there, sitting beside the crib, was a woman with silver-streaked hair.

She held Lily against her chest.

I recognized her from the photographs.

Margaret Bell.

My biological mother.

For twenty-two years, I had imagined what it would feel like to meet her.

I thought I would be angry.

I thought I would demand explanations.

Instead, I stood in the doorway and began crying.

Margaret looked up.

Her lips trembled.

"Emily.""

I approached slowly.

"You're alive.""

She nodded.

"I am.""

"Why did you leave me?""

Her face crumpled.

"I didn't leave you, sweetheart.""

She gently placed Lily in my arms.

Then she reached into her handbag and removed a small envelope.

"I have something for you.""

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph of Margaret holding three newborn babies.

And beneath it was a handwritten letter.

*To my children. If you are reading this together, then I finally brought you home.*

I looked at Margaret.

"Who are the three babies?""

She smiled through her tears.

"Emily, Alexander, and Thomas.""

I looked toward the doorway.

Alexander and Thomas had followed us upstairs.

For the first time, all three of us stood in the same room.

But Margaret wasn't finished.

She touched Lily's cheek.

"There is one more thing you need to know.""

"What?""

She looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

"Victor didn't steal Lily because of her inheritance.""

She swallowed.

"He wanted her because she is the only person who can prove what happened to Richard.""

I frowned.

"She's six months old.""

Margaret nodded.

"Before Richard's stroke, he secretly arranged for a DNA sample from Lily to be preserved. He knew Victor would try to erase the truth.""

She handed me another document.

It was a laboratory report.

The results showed that Lily was genetically connected to Richard Whitmore, Eleanor, and the three children in the photograph.

But there was another result.

A note at the bottom explained that Lily carried a rare inherited marker shared by Richard's direct descendants.

A marker that could establish the true parentage of every child involved in the hospital switch.

Margaret looked at me.

"Victor wanted that report destroyed.""

I stared at the paper.

Then I looked at my mother.

"Where is the original sample?""

She pointed toward a small wooden box.

"With Richard.""

I turned toward Eleanor.

She was crying.

For the first time, I understood that the story wasn't only about who had given birth to whom.

May you like

It was about a man who had spent his entire life deciding which children deserved to belong to a family.

And now, we finally had the evidence to end it.
