Chapter 11: The Father Nobody Knew
Nobody moved.
The words remained hanging in the air.
Your biological father is alive.
Marcus read the sentence again.
Then again.
As if his eyes were playing a cruel trick.
“No.””
His voice was barely audible.
Thomas looked at the floor.
Adrian looked away.
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Evelyn felt her heart breaking for her son.
Another truth.
Another person returning from the past.
Another piece of his life that had been stolen from him.
“Who is he?””
Marcus looked at Thomas.
“Who is my father?””
Thomas didn’t answer.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Who?””
Evelyn had never heard that tone from him before.
Not anger.
Not fear.
Desperation.
Thomas finally spoke.
“His name is Robert Hayes.””
The name meant nothing to Marcus.
But Evelyn reacted.
She knew.
Marcus saw it.
“Mom.””
She looked away.
“You know that name.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Not the way you think.””
“How do you know him?””
She hesitated.
And that hesitation was enough.
Marcus stepped back.
“You knew.””
“I knew of him.””
“Who was he?””
Evelyn looked at her son.
“A person from a very painful time in my life.””
Marcus stared.
“My whole life has been a painful time for everyone except me.””
The sentence crushed her.
She reached for him.
“I wanted to protect you.””
“I know.””
He nodded slowly.
“That’s the problem.””
He looked around the room.
“Everyone wanted to protect me.””
A pause.
“And nobody trusted me with the truth.””
Vanessa quietly said:
“Marcus…”
He looked at her.
She stopped.
Because she knew she had no right to comfort him.
Not after all her secrets.
Thomas picked up Daniel’s letter.
“There is more.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What else?””
Thomas read.
Robert knows about the evidence.
Evelyn frowned.
“What evidence?””
Thomas looked at the documents.
“The evidence Daniel hid.””
Adrian stepped closer.
“Daniel wasn’t just protecting his family.””
He looked at Marcus.
“He was protecting you.””
Marcus shook his head.
“From what?””
Nobody answered.
Then Charles spoke from the corner.
Everyone turned.
They had almost forgotten he was there.
“From becoming exactly like him.””
Marcus looked confused.
“Like who?””
Charles looked at the letter.
“Your biological father.””
The room became tense.
Charles continued.
“Robert Hayes was brilliant.””
A pause.
“Charming.””
Another pause.
“Dangerous.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Daniel never told me he was dangerous.””
“Because he wanted you to forget.””
Charles looked at Marcus.
“But Daniel never forgot.””
Marcus looked at the documents.
“So my biological father was involved in all of this?””
Charles nodded.
“Yes.””
Vanessa suddenly spoke.
“That’s why Daniel hid everything.””
Everyone looked at her.
She continued.
“Not because of me.””
Her voice shook.
“Because of Robert.””
Marcus looked at her.
“You knew?””
She nodded slowly.
“I found out after I married you.””
“How?””
“Your father told me.””
The room went silent.
“Daniel told you?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Because he wanted me to help him.””
Marcus stared.
“Help him do what?””
Vanessa looked toward the fireplace.
“Protect you.””
The answer was almost too painful.
Because every secret in the room seemed to lead back to the same thing.
Daniel had loved Marcus.
But he had also believed the truth would destroy him.
A knock interrupted them.
Everyone froze.
Not a normal knock.
Three slow knocks.
Like someone who knew they didn’t need permission.
Marcus walked toward the door.
Evelyn grabbed his arm.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She whispered:
“Daniel always locked the door when he was afraid.””
Marcus looked at the handle.
The person outside knocked again.
Three times.
Then a voice came through.
“Marcus.””
His blood ran cold.
Because the voice sounded familiar.
Not because he had heard it before.
Because it sounded like him.
Older.
Rougher.
But similar.
The voice spoke again.
“I know Daniel left you questions.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Then Thomas.
Then Evelyn.
Nobody moved.
The voice continued:
“But he never told you the most important truth.””
The door handle moved.
And the person outside said:
“Your father didn’t disappear.””
A pause.
“He ran.””
The door opened.
A man stood there.
Older.
May you like
Gray-haired.
But with Marcus’s eyes.
