Chapter 9: The Brother Who Disappeared

Evelyn couldn’t move.

Her entire body felt frozen.

Twenty years.

Twenty years of believing someone was gone.

Twenty years of unanswered questions.

Twenty years of wondering why her brother disappeared without saying goodbye.

And now he was standing inside her home.

Older.

Changed.

But alive.

“Thomas…”

The name left her lips like a whisper.

Thomas Carter looked at her.

“I know this is a shock.””

A shock.

The word was almost insulting.

Marcus stepped forward.

“You’re her brother?””

Thomas looked at him.

“Yes.””

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

“You never told me.””

Evelyn’s eyes stayed on Thomas.

“Because I thought he was dead.””

Thomas’s expression softened.

“I’m sorry.””

“No.””

Her voice shook.

“You don’t get to say that.””

The room went silent.

Evelyn had spent years grieving him.

She had buried memories.

Accepted the loss.

And now he was standing in front of her like it was nothing.

“You disappeared.””

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“I had to.””

“Why?””

He looked around the room.

At the key.

The documents.

The people gathered around Daniel’s secret.

“Because of this.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“You knew about the key?””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

Vanessa looked terrified.

“Thomas…”

He looked at her.

“You should have stayed away from this family.””

Marcus immediately noticed.

“You know Vanessa too.””

Thomas smiled sadly.

“Everyone knows everyone in this story.””

Evelyn looked between them.

“What is happening?””

Thomas walked toward the table.

“Daniel found out the truth.””

“What truth?””

Thomas touched the old photograph.

“The truth about what our family was involved in.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Our family?””

Thomas looked at her.

“Yes.””

Her face tightened.

“No.””

Daniel had spent his life protecting her.

She refused to believe he had hidden something this big.

Thomas sighed.

“You always trusted him too much.””

The words hurt.

Because they sounded familiar.

Too familiar.

Marcus noticed.

“Wait.””

He looked at Thomas.

“Are you saying Dad lied to her?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

That was enough.

Evelyn stepped back.

“No.””

Thomas looked at her.

“Evelyn.””

“No.””

Her voice became stronger.

“Whatever happened, Daniel loved me.””

Thomas nodded.

“I know.””

“Then don’t stand here and make him sound like a stranger.””

Thomas looked at the fireplace.

“He wasn’t a stranger.””

A pause.

“He was a man trying to fix something he helped create.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus looked confused.

“What did my father do?””

Thomas looked at him.

“That depends on what Daniel told you.””

“He told me nothing.””

Thomas looked at the key.

“Exactly.””

The statement made everyone uncomfortable.

Adrian moved closer.

“You’re here because you want what’s inside the box.””

Thomas smiled.

“No.””

He looked at Evelyn.

“I’m here because I know what’s inside.””

The room went silent.

Marcus clenched his jaw.

“Then why let us open it?””

“Because Daniel wanted Evelyn to see it.””

Thomas looked at her.

“Not me.””

Evelyn stared.

“Why?””

“Because he knew if the truth came from me, you would never believe it.””

That hurt because it was true.

Thomas had betrayed her.

But Daniel?

Daniel had been the one person she trusted completely.

She looked at the metal box.

“What else is there?””

Thomas didn’t answer.

Instead, he looked at Vanessa.

“You still haven’t told him.””

Vanessa looked away.

Marcus turned.

“Told me what?””

Thomas sighed.

“The reason she married you.””

The room went silent.

Marcus looked at his wife.

Vanessa’s face crumpled.

“Thomas, stop.””

“No.””

His voice became harder.

“You’ve protected everyone for twenty years. Look where that got you.””

Marcus stared.

“Vanessa?””

She looked at him.

Tears filled her eyes.

“I didn’t marry you because of your family.””

Marcus waited.

The pause was painful.

“But…”

Her voice broke.

“When I met you, I already knew who your father was.””

Marcus looked away.

Like the words physically hurt.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Another secret.

Another piece missing.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I loved you.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“But you started with a lie.””

“Yes.””

“Why should I believe anything else?””

Vanessa had no answer.

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

“Daniel knew this day would come.””

He reached into his coat.

And removed a small envelope.

Evelyn recognized the handwriting immediately.

Her hands began shaking.

Another letter.

Another secret.

“This one was not hidden in the house,” Thomas said.

“Daniel gave it to me before he died.””

Evelyn looked at him.

“You had a letter from my husband for twenty years?””

Thomas nodded.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Thomas looked at her with sadness.

“Because he told me never to give it to you until you knew the whole truth.””

Evelyn took the envelope.

She opened it carefully.

Inside was one sentence.

Only one.

Her eyes filled instantly.

Marcus leaned closer.

“What does it say?””

Evelyn couldn’t speak.

She handed him the paper.

Marcus read it.

And his face changed.

Because Daniel’s final message wasn’t about Vanessa.

It wasn’t about Thomas.

It wasn’t even about the hidden evidence.

It was about Marcus.

The note said:

My son, if you are reading this, I need you to know the truth about the day you were born.

Marcus looked up slowly.

“What does that mean?””

Nobody answered.

Not Evelyn.

Not Vanessa.

Not Thomas.

And then Thomas said the words that shattered the room.

“Marcus…”

May you like

He looked at him.

“You were never supposed to be Daniel’s son.””
