Chapter 14: What Daniel Left Behind
Nobody spoke as they returned to the fireplace.
The room felt different now.
Not because of the darkness.
Because the final secret was waiting.
The fireplace had held Daniel’s warning.
The key.
The letters.
The evidence.
And now there was something else.
Marcus knelt beside the stone hearth.
Thomas stood behind him.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
Not of being exposed.
Of what Marcus would discover.
“Where is it?”” Marcus asked.
Thomas pointed.
“Under the left stone.””
Marcus looked at him.
“You knew.””
“Yes.””
“And you didn’t tell anyone.””
Thomas looked away.
“Yes.””
Marcus shook his head.
“You’re just like everyone else.””
The words hurt.
Thomas accepted them.
Marcus pressed against the stone.
Nothing happened.
Then he tried again.
A hidden latch clicked.
A small section of the fireplace moved.
Inside was another compartment.
But this time, there was no key.
Only a single object.
A small wooden box.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Daniel’s handwriting was carved into the lid.
For my family.
Marcus opened it.
Inside was a stack of photographs.
Not documents.
Not evidence.
Photographs.
The first showed Daniel and Evelyn young and happy.
The second showed Marcus as a child.
Daniel holding his hand.
The third showed Vanessa.
Young.
Afraid.
Standing outside Daniel’s old office.
Marcus frowned.
“Why are there pictures of Vanessa?””
Vanessa stepped closer.
She looked at the photograph.
“I didn’t know he took that.””
Thomas looked at her.
“Because Daniel was watching.””
Marcus turned.
“Why?””
Thomas answered.
“Because he knew she was in danger.””
Vanessa looked confused.
“What?””
Charles picked up another photo.
This one showed Thomas meeting with someone.
The person’s face was hidden.
But Marcus recognized the location.
His father’s office.
The date was twenty years earlier.
Marcus looked at Thomas.
“You met with someone.””
Thomas nodded.
“Yes.””
“Who?””
Thomas stared at the photograph.
“I don’t know.””
Everyone froze.
“What do you mean?””
Thomas’s voice was quiet.
“I thought I knew.””
He touched the picture.
“But I was wrong.””
Robert picked up another document hidden beneath the photographs.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He handed it to Marcus.
It was a report.
A private investigation.
Daniel had hired someone.
To investigate the entire family.
Marcus read the first line.
His hands went cold.
Subject: Person responsible for Daniel Carter’s death.
Evelyn looked at him.
“What?””
Marcus looked up.
“Dad thought someone killed him.””
The room went silent.
“He knew he was dying.””
Robert shook his head.
“Daniel believed his illness was not natural.””
Evelyn’s face changed.
“No.””
She remembered.
The sudden decline.
The unexplained symptoms.
The doctors who had no answers.
She had buried those questions because she couldn’t handle them.
Marcus continued reading.
The final page contained one name.
A name circled in red.
His face went pale.
“What?””
Evelyn asked.
Marcus couldn’t speak.
He handed her the paper.
She read the name.
And dropped it.
Because it wasn’t Thomas.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t Robert.
It wasn’t Charles.
It was someone she trusted.
Someone who had been beside her during Daniel’s final days.
Someone who had cried with her.
Someone who had comforted her.
Evelyn whispered:
“No…”
Marcus looked at her.
“Who is it?””
She couldn’t answer.
Robert picked up the paper.
His expression darkened.
Then he said the name.
“Adrian.””
Everyone turned.
Adrian stood frozen.
The man who had claimed to be Daniel’s protector.
The man who brought the truth.
The man who helped them uncover the secrets.
Vanessa looked at him in disbelief.
“You?””
Adrian closed his eyes.
“I knew this day would come.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“You knew?””
Adrian looked at him.
“Yes.””
“You knew Daniel thought you killed him?””
Adrian looked at Evelyn.
“I didn’t kill Daniel.””
The words came quickly.
Too quickly.
Marcus noticed.
“Then why is your name on the report?””
Adrian had no answer.
Evelyn felt something inside her break.
Because for the first time, she didn’t know who to believe.
Adrian looked at the box.
“Daniel was right about one thing.””
“What?””
“He said the truth would destroy the family before it saved them.””
The lights suddenly flickered.
Everyone looked up.
Then the power returned.
The room brightened.
And in the reflection of the fireplace glass, Evelyn saw something.
A shadow.
Someone standing behind them.
She turned.
Nobody was there.
Then her phone rang.
A number she didn’t recognize.
She answered.
A voice whispered:
“Evelyn, don’t trust Adrian.””
May you like
Her blood ran cold.
Because the voice belonged to Daniel.
