Chapter 8: The Truth Vanessa Buried
Evelyn read the sentence again.
It is the person who taught her how to hide.
The words felt impossible.
She looked at Vanessa.
Then Charles.
Nobody moved.
Finally, Marcus spoke.
“Who?””
Charles’s expression changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Like he already knew the answer.
Vanessa looked at him.
“You never told them.””
Charles didn’t respond.
Marcus stepped closer.
“I’m done waiting.””
His voice was calm now.
That scared Evelyn more than his anger.
“When my father died, I lost him.””
He looked around the room.
“I’m not losing my family because everyone wants to protect their own secrets.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Marcus…”
“No.””
He shook his head.
“Tell me the truth.””
A long silence passed.
Then Charles sighed.
“Daniel was investigating a company twenty years ago.””
Adrian nodded.
“He found evidence of fraud.””
Evelyn looked confused.
“What does that have to do with Vanessa?””
Charles looked down.
“Vanessa’s father worked for that company.””
Vanessa whispered:
“He wasn’t the only one.””
Everyone turned.
She wiped her eyes.
“There were other people involved.””
Marcus stared.
“And you knew?””
“I knew something was wrong.””
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because I was afraid.””
“For twenty years?””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised him.
Vanessa continued.
“When I was younger, my father told me never to trust anyone. He said people only cared when they needed something.””
Evelyn felt a sadness she didn’t expect.
Because behind the secrets was a person who had been afraid for a long time.
“But then I met Daniel,” Vanessa said.
Her voice softened.
“He was the first person who treated me like I wasn’t my father’s mistakes.””
Charles looked away.
Vanessa continued.
“He helped me leave.””
Marcus frowned.
“Then why would Dad warn us about you?””
Vanessa looked at the floor.
“Because I came back.””
“Why?””
“Because I found out the evidence still existed.””
Marcus’s face hardened.
“So it was about the key.””
“At first.””
She looked at Evelyn.
“Then it became about protecting this family.””
Evelyn stared.
“You should have told us.””
“I know.””
“Why didn’t you?””
Vanessa’s voice broke.
“Because every time I tried, I remembered what my father did.””
She looked at Marcus.
“And I was terrified you would see me the way everyone saw him.””
The room became quiet.
For the first time, Marcus didn’t look angry.
He looked hurt.
Then Charles spoke.
“She’s leaving something out.””
Everyone turned.
Vanessa’s expression changed.
“Charles.””
“You’re still protecting her.””
Adrian frowned.
“Who?””
Charles walked toward the table.
“Vanessa didn’t just find the key.””
He picked up one of the documents.
“She found Daniel’s hidden records before.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
“When?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Charles answered for her.
“Months ago.””
Evelyn froze.
“Months?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I was trying to figure out what was inside.””
Marcus stared.
“You were in my father’s things?””
“Yes.””
The confession broke something inside him.
“You searched my family’s home.””
“I never wanted to hurt you.””
“But you lied.””
Vanessa looked down.
“Yes.””
Marcus stepped away.
Evelyn watched her son struggle.
Because the truth was not simple.
Vanessa had lied.
But she had also been protecting something.
Someone.
Daniel’s final letter sat on the table.
Waiting.
Charles reached for another document.
“This is the piece Daniel wanted Evelyn to see.””
He unfolded it.
A photograph was attached.
A younger Daniel.
A younger Charles.
And another person.
Evelyn recognized him immediately.
Her breath caught.
“No…”
Marcus looked at her.
“Mom?””
She touched the photograph.
“I know him.””
Everyone turned.
“Who?””
Evelyn stared at the face.
A man she had not seen in twenty years.
A man Daniel told her had moved away.
A man whose disappearance had always bothered her.
“My brother.””
Silence.
Marcus frowned.
“You never told me you had an uncle.””
Evelyn looked at him.
“Because Daniel told me he was gone.””
Charles looked at her.
“He wasn’t gone.””
Evelyn’s heart raced.
“What are you saying?””
Charles placed another paper on the table.
A death certificate.
A bank record.
A hidden report.
Then he said:
“Daniel didn’t hide the key from Vanessa.””
He looked at Evelyn.
“He hid it from your brother.””
Nobody spoke.
The room changed.
Because suddenly Vanessa was no longer the only person connected to the secret.
Marcus looked at the documents.
“My grandfather?””
“No,” Evelyn whispered.
“My brother.””
Adrian looked at Charles.
“You knew.””
Charles nodded.
“I knew.””
“Then why didn’t Daniel tell her?””
Charles looked toward Evelyn.
“Because your brother was the person Daniel trusted least.””
The front door suddenly opened.
Everyone turned.
A voice came from outside.
A voice Evelyn hadn’t heard in twenty years.
“Actually, Daniel was wrong about me.””
Evelyn stopped breathing.
The man stepped inside.
Older.
Gray-haired.
But unmistakable.
Her brother.
Alive.
He looked directly at her.
May you like
And smiled.
“Hello, Evelyn.””
