Chapter 6: Daniel’s Final Warning
The recording replayed three more times.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody moved.
Each time Daniel’s voice filled the living room, the truth felt closer.
And each time, Vanessa looked more defeated.
Marcus stood near the window.
His back faced everyone.
Evelyn knew her son.
She knew the silence meant he was trying not to break.
“Marcus.””
He didn’t answer.
“Son.””
Finally, he turned around.
His eyes were red.
“Did you know?””
The question was directed at Vanessa.
She looked down.
“Know what?””
“Anything.””
A painful silence.
“About my father.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“Some things.””
Marcus laughed bitterly.
“Some things?””
He pointed toward the table.
“My father hid a key because of you.””
“Marcus—”
“He left a message because of you.””
“Listen to me.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I listened to you for years.””
The words hurt.
Even Vanessa looked away.
Evelyn stepped forward.
“Tell us the truth.””
Vanessa sat down slowly.
Her hands trembled.
“I never wanted this to happen.””
Marcus stared.
“That doesn’t answer anything.””
She looked at Evelyn.
“When I met Daniel…”
Marcus froze.
“When?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Before I met you.””
The room went silent.
Evelyn felt the floor disappear beneath her.
“You knew my husband before you knew my son?””
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
Marcus took a step back.
“How?””
Vanessa looked at Adrian.
Adrian answered.
“She came looking for something.””
Marcus looked at him.
“What?””
Adrian didn’t answer immediately.
“She believed Daniel had something that belonged to her family.””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“That’s not true.””
“Then tell them.””
She looked away.
Evelyn picked up the photograph again.
The one with Daniel, Adrian, and a younger Vanessa.
“You were young.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Twenty years old.””
“And Daniel knew you.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Vanessa’s eyes filled.
“Because he was trying to help me.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Help you?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I wasn’t trying to hurt anyone.””
“Then why did he warn us about you?””
She had no answer.
That frightened everyone.
Then the flash drive clicked again.
A second recording began.
Daniel’s voice returned.
This time, it sounded more urgent.
“Evelyn…”
Everyone turned.
“If you’re hearing this, then I couldn’t tell you myself.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Tears formed instantly.
Daniel continued.
“I need you to know Vanessa is not the enemy you think she is.””
Everyone froze.
Marcus looked confused.
Vanessa looked shocked.
Adrian stared at the device.
The recording continued.
“But she is not innocent either.””
Vanessa’s face fell.
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“She came into our family carrying a secret.””
A pause.
“She also came into our family carrying a reason to destroy us.””
Marcus looked at Vanessa.
Evelyn gripped the edge of the table.
Daniel continued:
“The key will show you what she was searching for.””
The recording crackled.
Then his final words came.
“Evelyn, trust your heart. But do not ignore the evidence.””
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Because Daniel had just done something impossible.
He had defended Vanessa.
And warned them about her.
At the same time.
Marcus looked exhausted.
“I don’t understand.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Neither do I.””
Then Adrian suddenly looked toward the front door.
Everyone noticed.
“What?”” Evelyn asked.
His expression changed.
“Someone else knows.””
Marcus frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
Adrian walked to the window.
Outside, a black SUV sat across the street.
The engine was running.
Evelyn’s stomach tightened.
“Who is that?””
Adrian didn’t answer.
Because he already knew.
The SUV door opened.
A figure stepped out.
And even from inside the house, Vanessa recognized the person.
Her face turned pale.
“No…”
Marcus looked at her.
“Who is it?””
Vanessa whispered the name.
A name she had spent twenty years trying to forget.
“The person who started all of this.””
The front door handle slowly turned.
Someone was coming inside.
May you like
And whoever was on the other side wasn’t looking for the key.
They were looking for what Daniel had hidden behind it.
