Chapter 1: The Camera Above the Fireplace

“Your father tried to kill my baby!””

Vanessa screamed those words from the living-room floor, clutching her eight-months-pregnant stomach while my son stood in the doorway and stared at me as if I were a murderer.

I had not touched her.

I had not even come within three feet of her.

Yet, in less than thirty seconds, my entire family was about to turn against me.

“My God, Vanessa!”” Daniel rushed across the room and dropped to his knees beside his wife.

“What happened? Are you hurt?””

“She pushed me!”” Vanessa sobbed, burying her face against his shoulder.

“I told you she hated me. I told you she didn't want this baby!””

Daniel's head snapped toward me.

“Dad?””

I stood beside the sofa, my fingers curled around the handle of my walking cane. At sixty-seven, I was not as quick as I had once been, but I was still strong enough to remember exactly where I had been standing when Vanessa began her performance.

“I didn't touch her, Daniel.””

Vanessa let out another anguished cry.

“Don't let him come near me!””

Daniel immediately moved between us.

“Dad, stay back.””

I stared at my son.

The boy who had once run through the house with a scraped knee, begging me to carry him, now looked at me with disgust.

“Son,” I said carefully, “look at me. Have I ever raised a hand against a woman?””

“This isn't about the past!””

“No. It's about what happened thirty seconds ago. And I am telling you the truth.””

Vanessa lifted her tear-streaked face.

“Your father grabbed my arm,” she whispered.

“He said my baby would ruin everything. When I tried to walk away, he shoved me.””

Daniel's expression changed.

His eyes filled with something more dangerous than anger.

Fear.

“Is that true?”” he demanded.

“No.””

“Dad, she's carrying my child!””

“And I am your father!””

The words echoed through the room.

For a moment, neither of us moved.

Then Vanessa pressed both hands against her stomach and gasped.

“Daniel, something's wrong. Please. The baby isn't moving.””

Daniel went white.

“I'm calling an ambulance.””

He reached for his phone, but before he could dial, Vanessa grabbed his wrist.

“Don't leave me with him.””

That was the moment I understood how carefully she had planned this.

She wasn't merely accusing me.

She was forcing Daniel to choose between his pregnant wife and his father.

And she knew exactly which choice he would make.

“Dad,” Daniel said, his voice suddenly cold, “I need you to leave.””

I blinked.

“What?””

“Get out of this house.””

“This house?”” I repeated.

The house I had helped him purchase with the money I saved after forty years of working construction. The house whose mortgage I had helped cover when his business nearly collapsed two years earlier.

I had never asked him to repay a single dollar.

I had never expected gratitude.

But I had believed that, when the time came, my own son would at least hear me out.

“Daniel, I helped you buy this place.””

“And that gives you the right to hurt my wife?””

“I did not hurt her!””

Vanessa began crying harder.

Daniel stood and pointed toward the front door.

“Leave. Now.””

I felt something inside me go quiet.

Not broken.

Quiet.

I had spent most of my life protecting my son from the worst things the world could do to him. I had never imagined I would need protection from the worst thing he could believe about me.

I reached for my coat.

Then Maria appeared in the doorway.

She had worked in our household for six years. She knew where Daniel kept his childhood photographs, which drawer contained my late wife's letters, and exactly how I took my coffee.

She had also witnessed enough of Vanessa's temper to know that the woman who smiled in public could be very different behind closed doors.

Now Maria was pale, breathing hard, and gripping her phone.

“Mr. Daniel,” she said, “you need to watch something.””

Daniel barely glanced at her.

“Not now, Maria.””

“Yes. Now.””

Vanessa's crying stopped.

It lasted less than a second, but I saw the change in her face.

Her eyes darted toward Maria's phone.

Then toward the fireplace.

Then back to Daniel.

“What is that?”” she demanded.

Maria swallowed.

“The security footage.””

Daniel frowned.

“What security footage?””

“The camera above the fireplace. I checked it after hearing the shouting.””

Vanessa pushed herself upright.

“You can't record people without telling them!””

“You asked Mr. Robert to install that camera yourself,” Maria replied.

“You said it was because packages kept disappearing.””

Vanessa opened her mouth, then closed it.

Daniel looked toward the small black device mounted in the corner above the mantel.

He had forgotten it was there.

Apparently, so had Vanessa.

Maria held out her phone.

“Watch it before you decide what to do with your father.””

Daniel hesitated.

Vanessa reached for his arm.

“Baby, please. I'm frightened. I need you.””

He looked at her, and for one brief moment, I thought he might put the phone away.

Then he took it from Maria.

The video showed Vanessa entering the living room alone.

She glanced toward the hallway.

She glanced toward the kitchen.

Then she looked directly at the doorway Daniel would use to enter.

With a calmness that made my stomach turn, she placed one hand on the coffee table, lowered herself onto the carpet, and began screaming.

Daniel's face lost all expression.

He replayed the clip.

Then he looked at his wife.

“Vanessa,” he whispered, “what is this?””

She snatched at the phone.

“That's edited!””

Maria stepped between them.

“It isn't.””

“You stupid old woman!”” Vanessa shouted.

“You have no idea what you're doing!””

Maria flinched, but she didn't move.

“I know what I saw.””

Daniel stared at the screen.

“Is there more?””

Maria nodded.

“I was checking the recording from earlier this morning. I found something else.””

Vanessa's lips parted.

“No.””

The word came out so softly that only those of us standing close could hear it.

Daniel turned toward her.

“What do you mean, no?””

Maria scrolled through the footage.

“This was recorded before you came home. Vanessa was speaking to someone near the fireplace.””

“Who?”” Daniel asked.

Maria looked at me.

Then at him.

“I couldn't see the person's face. But I could hear what they said.””

Vanessa backed toward the doorway.

Daniel grabbed her wrist.

“Stay here.””

For the first time since I had known her, Vanessa looked genuinely terrified.

Maria pressed play.

A man's voice came through the phone.

“Once Robert is out of the house, everything belongs to us.””

Daniel went completely still.

Then the voice continued.

“And if your husband asks why, tell him the old man threatened you.””

Vanessa lunged for the phone.

But Daniel pulled it away.

Because he recognized that voice.

And so did I.

It belonged to someone Daniel had trusted for nearly twenty years.

His best friend.

His business partner.

And the man who had stood beside him at his wedding.
