Chapter 2: The Man Behind the Voice

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The refrigerator hummed in the kitchen. Somewhere outside, a lawn mower rattled down the street. The ordinary sounds of an ordinary afternoon continued while my son's life split into two pieces.

Daniel stared at the phone.

“Play it again.””

Maria hesitated.

“Mr. Daniel—”

“Please. Play it again.””

She did.

The man's voice repeated the same words.

Once Robert is out of the house, everything belongs to us.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Michael Carter had been his closest friend since college. They had started their construction company in a rented office with two desks, one broken printer, and a borrowed pickup truck.

When Daniel married Vanessa, Michael had been his best man.

When Daniel's company nearly went bankrupt, Michael had convinced investors to give them another chance.

And when Daniel's mother died, Michael had sat beside him at the funeral until sunrise.

I had trusted him, too.

That was the part that hurt.

“Vanessa,” Daniel said slowly, “tell me that isn't Michael.””

She wiped her cheeks with the back of her hand.

“I don't know what you think you heard.””

“His voice is unmistakable.””

“People can imitate voices.””

“Then why did you try to destroy the phone?””

“I didn't!””

“You reached for it!””

“Because Maria is trying to ruin my marriage!””

Maria's mouth fell open.

“I showed him a recording of what you did.””

“You've always hated me,” Vanessa snapped.

“Ever since I married Daniel, you've been waiting for a chance to make me look bad.””

“That's enough,” Daniel said.

His voice was quiet.

Vanessa turned toward him, apparently expecting him to defend her.

Instead, he held up the phone.

“Who were you talking to this morning?””

She folded her arms over her stomach.

“I already told you. Nobody.””

“The recording says otherwise.””

“Then ask Michael! Maybe he came to discuss business.””

“Business?”” Daniel repeated.

“What business requires you to tell someone to get my father out of the house?””

Vanessa looked at me.

For the first time that afternoon, she seemed to forget that I was supposed to be the villain.

Then she recovered.

“Your father has been interfering in our marriage for months.””

I laughed once, without humor.

“Interfering? I haven't said ten words to you this week.””

“You criticize everything I do.””

“Name one example.””

“You question how I spend money.””

“Because you withdrew twenty-eight thousand dollars from Daniel's business account without telling him.””

Daniel turned sharply.

“What?””

Vanessa's expression flickered.

“That was for household expenses.””

“Twenty-eight thousand dollars?”” Daniel asked.

“You told me that money was still in the account.””

“I was going to replace it.””

“With what?””

She said nothing.

Daniel looked as though he had just discovered a second fire burning in the house.

I knew about the withdrawal because I had helped Daniel review his accounts the previous month. I had said nothing then because he insisted Vanessa must have had a reasonable explanation.

Now the silence between them grew heavy.

“Daniel,” Vanessa said, softening her voice, “you know how stressful this pregnancy has been. I've been overwhelmed. Michael was helping me organize some things.””

“Organize what?””

“Our finances.””

“Why would you need Michael to organize our finances?””

“Because you never have time for me!””

Daniel stared at her.

“You told me you hated discussing money with him.””

Vanessa blinked.

Then she began to cry again.

It was an impressive transformation. Within seconds, the angry woman who had insulted Maria became a frightened wife who could barely stand.

“I can't believe you're doing this to me,” she whispered.

“I'm carrying your child, and you're interrogating me because your father and a housekeeper have decided to gang up on me.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Don't bring the baby into this.””

“I'm not bringing the baby into it! The baby is already in it!””

She pressed a hand against her stomach.

I watched Daniel's face. He wanted desperately to believe that his wife was simply frightened and confused.

But the recording remained on his phone.

And truth, once heard, was difficult to silence.

“Maria,” he said, “is there anything else?””

She nodded.

“The camera recorded another conversation yesterday. I didn't listen to all of it, but I saved the file.””

Vanessa took a step toward her.

“Delete it.””

“No.””

“I'm telling you to delete it!””

“And I'm telling you that I won't.””

Vanessa grabbed a decorative glass vase from the side table.

“Give me that phone!””

She raised the vase as though she intended to smash it against Maria's hand.

Daniel caught her wrist.

“Put it down!””

Vanessa stared at him.

For the first time, he had physically stopped her from getting what she wanted.

She slowly lowered the vase.

Then she looked at his hand around her wrist.

“You're hurting me.””

Daniel released her immediately.

She dropped the vase onto the sofa and began rubbing her wrist.

“You see?”” she whispered.

“This is what happens when your father turns you against me.””

I stepped forward.

“Daniel, don't let her change the subject.””

He looked at me, then at the phone.

“I need to hear the rest.””

Maria unlocked the recording from the previous day.

The picture was grainy. The camera captured most of the living room but missed the far corner near the curtains.

Vanessa was standing by the fireplace, speaking to someone outside the frame.

This time, the voice was unmistakably Michael's.

“Did you get the paperwork?”” he asked.

Vanessa answered, “Almost. Robert keeps everything locked away.””

“Then make him leave.””

“He won't leave willingly.””

“That's why you have to give Daniel a reason to throw him out.””

A pause followed.

Then Vanessa asked, “What if Daniel finds out?””

Michael laughed.

“He won't. He trusts you too much.””

Daniel's fingers tightened around the phone.

The recording continued.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“And after Robert is gone?””

“Then we move to the next step.””

“What next step?””

“Get Daniel to sign the revised agreement. Once he does, the company is ours.””

Daniel stopped the video.

The silence that followed was unbearable.

I knew exactly which agreement Michael meant.

Six weeks earlier, Daniel had asked me to review a business document. He said Michael wanted to restructure their company before bringing in a new investor.

I had read the first few pages and found several clauses that made no sense.

When I asked Daniel about them, he said Michael had promised to explain everything.

I had told him not to sign anything until I could examine the complete contract.

Then, three days later, the document disappeared from Daniel's office.

I had assumed Michael had taken it back.

Now I understood why.

“Vanessa,” Daniel said, “what agreement is he talking about?””

She shook her head.

“I don't know.””

“You were discussing it with him yesterday.””

“I didn't understand what he meant!””

“You said you had almost gotten the paperwork.””

“I was trying to keep him calm!””

Daniel stood up.

“You were helping my business partner steal my company?””

“No!””

“You just said—”

“I said I was trying to keep him calm!”” she shouted.

“Michael told me you were in trouble. He said the company could collapse, and I was trying to help you!””

“By getting rid of my father?””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

For one dangerous second, the tears vanished completely.

“Your father is the reason you never grew up,” she said.

Daniel recoiled as if she had slapped him.

“What?””

“He treats you like a child. He questions your decisions. He makes you feel guilty whenever you try to build a life without him.””

I felt the words land where she intended them to.

She had spent years planting that idea in Daniel's mind.

Whenever I offered advice, she called it interference. Whenever I helped financially, she said I was buying influence. Whenever Daniel visited me, she found a reason to make him feel guilty for leaving her alone.

I had believed patience would eventually earn her trust.

I had been wrong.

“You lied about my father attacking you,” Daniel said.

Vanessa looked down.

“I was upset.””

“You staged a fall.””

“I didn't know what else to do!””

“You accused him of trying to hurt our baby!””

Her face crumpled again.

“I was scared you'd never choose me.””

The admission escaped before she could stop it.

Nobody moved.

Daniel stared at her.

Then he asked the question that changed everything.

“Choose you over what?””

Vanessa pressed her lips together.

Maria's phone vibrated.

A new notification appeared on the screen.

It was an automatic alert from the home's security system.

*Front door motion detected.*

Maria glanced toward the hallway.

“Someone's here.””

Daniel looked at the clock.

Then he looked at the camera footage.

“Whoever it is,” he said, “they'd better have a very good explanation.””

The doorbell rang.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Because the person standing outside wasn't a stranger.

May you like

It was Michael.

And he was carrying a thick folder with Daniel's name written across the front.
