Chapter 11: Vanessa's Confession
Vanessa was sitting upright in a hospital bed when we entered her room.
A nurse had placed a blanket over her legs. Her hair was tangled, her face was bruised, and a small bandage covered the back of her hand.
For once, she wasn't crying.
She looked exhausted.
Daniel stopped beside the doorway.
“Where is the baby?””
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“Daniel, please sit down.””
“Where is she?””
“She's safe.””
“That's not an answer.””
Vanessa swallowed.
“She's at a private nursery in the north end of town. Michael arranged it through an agency. He told them he was the child's legal guardian.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Then why did you let him take her?””
“I didn't know he was going to.””
“Vanessa!””
“I swear to you, Daniel. I thought he was taking her somewhere temporary until the legal papers were finalized.””
“What papers?””
“The guardianship documents.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“You helped him forge my father's signature, steal my mother's money, and manipulate the trust. What exactly did you think those papers were for?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I thought he was trying to secure the inheritance.””
“For whom?””
She looked at him.
“For the baby.””
I stepped closer.
“Vanessa, you knew that child wasn't yours.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you tell us she was connected to your pregnancy?””
Her hands began trembling.
“Because Michael told me to.””
Daniel pulled a chair toward the bed but didn't sit.
“Start from the beginning. No more lies.””
Vanessa took a deep breath.
“Three months ago, Michael came to me with a photograph of a newborn girl. He said the child was related to Daniel's family and that there was a trust worth millions of dollars.””
I felt my stomach tighten.
“He told me that if I helped him obtain control of the trust, we'd never have to worry about money again. He said he could make sure our baby grew up wealthy.””
Daniel's expression hardened.
“And you believed him?””
“At first, yes. He showed me legal documents. He said your father was hiding assets from you and that your mother had left behind a fortune nobody knew about.””
“He used my mother to manipulate you.””
“I know that now.””
“No. You knew it when you watched him forge her records.””
Vanessa flinched.
Then she whispered, “You're right.””
The admission surprised both of us.
She continued.
“Michael told me that Evelyn had been abandoned by her biological family and that he was the only person willing to protect her. He said the trust was being wasted because nobody had claimed it.””
“And the money you transferred?””
“He said it was an advance against the trust.””
“Three hundred thousand dollars?””
She nodded.
“Michael told me to move it through an account under my father's name. He promised to replace it before anyone noticed.””
Daniel sat down slowly.
“Did my father know?””
“No.””
“Did I?””
“No.””
“Then you stole it.””
Vanessa's face crumpled.
“Yes.””
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then I asked the question that had been troubling me since the photograph appeared.
“Why did you pretend to be eight months pregnant?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
When she opened them, tears were running down her cheeks.
“Because I was pregnant.””
Daniel went completely still.
“What?””
“I was pregnant when Michael first approached me. I lost the baby at twelve weeks.””
Daniel stared at her.
“You told me the pregnancy was progressing normally.””
“I know.””
“You told me you could feel the baby moving.””
Vanessa began sobbing.
“I know.””
“Why?””
“Because I was terrified you would leave me.””
Daniel stood so quickly that the chair scraped across the floor.
“You lied about our child?””
“I couldn't bear to lose you!””
“You let me plan a nursery. You let me buy a crib. You let my father believe he was going to be a grandfather again!””
“I know!””
Her scream broke into a sob.
“I was ashamed. I didn't know how to tell you. Then Michael said he could help me.””
Daniel stared at her as if she had struck him.
“Help you how?””
“He said the baby in the photograph could give us time. He said we could pretend the pregnancy was further along, then introduce Evelyn as our child after the trust was secured.””
I gripped the back of the chair.
“You intended to steal a child and pass her off as your own?””
Vanessa shook her head desperately.
“Michael said it would be temporary. He said once the legal arrangements were complete, the child would have a better life with us.””
“Did you believe that?”” Daniel asked.
“I wanted to.””
“That's not the same thing.””
She looked down.
“No.””
Daniel walked to the window.
For a moment, I thought he might break something.
Instead, he stood with his forehead pressed against the glass, breathing slowly.
Then he turned.
“Why did you accuse my father of attacking you?””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“Michael said Robert had to be removed from the house before the documents could be found. He told me your father had evidence that could destroy the trust.””
“So you staged the fall.””
“Yes.””
“You knew the camera was there.””
“I forgot about it.””
“You forgot about the camera you asked Maria to install?””
Vanessa looked away.
“I panicked.””
I shook my head.
“You didn't panic when you stole the money. You didn't panic when you forged my signature. You didn't panic when you lied about our son's child.””
Vanessa covered her face.
“I know what I did.””
“No,” I said quietly.
“I don't think you do.””
She looked up.
I continued.
“You were willing to destroy my relationship with my son because someone promised you money. You were willing to take a child away from her family. And you used your own miscarriage as a reason to deceive the people who loved you.””
Vanessa began to cry harder.
But I felt no satisfaction.
Only grief.
For Daniel.
For Margaret.
For the little girl who had spent her first months of life being treated like a key to a fortune.
Daniel returned to the bedside.
“Where is the nursery?””
Vanessa gave him the address.
“There's a woman named Helen who looks after the baby. Michael told her that he was the legal guardian. She doesn't know about the trust.””
“Does she know the baby might be my sister?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“No.””
Daniel took out his phone and called the investigating officer.
He gave the address and asked them to secure the child immediately.
When he ended the call, Vanessa reached for his hand.
“Daniel, please. I know you hate me, but I was going to tell you everything.””
He withdrew his hand.
“When?””
She stared at him.
“After Michael transferred the money?””
She couldn't answer.
“After you got control of the trust?””
Nothing.
“Or after you had everything you wanted?””
Vanessa began shaking.
“I don't know.””
Daniel looked at her for a long time.
Then he said, “I hope you understand that I will never trust you again.””
She broke down completely.
I placed a hand on my son's shoulder.
“Come on, Daniel.””
As we reached the doorway, Vanessa called after us.
“Robert!””
I turned.
She looked terrified.
“There's something else. Michael told me that if the trust was opened, someone would come forward claiming to be Evelyn's mother.””
I frowned.
“What?””
“He said the woman had been paid to disappear years ago. He said she'd been living under another name.””
Daniel turned back.
“Who is she?””
Vanessa swallowed.
“I don't know her real name. Michael called her Catherine.””
I felt a strange chill run through me.
Margaret had once mentioned a nurse named Catherine who worked at St. Catherine's Hospital. She had been one of the last people to see Evelyn before the transfer.
I had never thought about her again.
“Did Michael say where she was?”” I asked.
Vanessa nodded.
“He said she'd contact you after the vault was opened.””
Daniel's phone rang.
The officer.
He answered immediately.
“Did you find the baby?””
“Yes, Mr. Hayes. We located the nursery. The child is safe, and the caregiver is cooperating.””
Daniel closed his eyes in relief.
Then the officer continued.
“There's one complication. A woman arrived at the nursery shortly before our officers did. She presented documents claiming to be the child's biological mother.””
I felt my heart stop.
“What was her name?””
The officer paused.
“Catherine Whitmore.””
Daniel looked at me.

The woman who had supposedly disappeared twenty years earlier had finally returned.
And she was claiming our daughter.
