Chapter 12: The Woman Who Came Back for Evelyn
Catherine Whitmore was waiting in a private interview room when we arrived at the police station.
She stood as soon as we entered.
She was in her late forties, with dark hair streaked with silver and a thin scar running from her left temple to her cheekbone. She wore a plain gray coat and held a folder against her chest.
For several seconds, she stared at me.
Then she whispered, “Robert Hayes.””
I couldn't speak.
She looked exactly like the woman in Margaret's photograph.
Older, thinner, and worn by years of hardship, but unmistakably the same person.
Daniel stepped beside me.
“Are you Evelyn's mother?””
Catherine's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.””
Daniel's voice was cold.
“Then where have you been for twenty years?””
She lowered her head.
“Trying to find her.””
“That's not an answer.””
“I know.””
She placed the folder on the table and opened it.
Inside were old photographs, hospital records, letters, and a series of documents bearing official stamps.
“I was a nurse at St. Catherine's Hospital when Margaret gave birth to the twins,” she said.
“I was assigned to the maternity ward. I saw the babies every day.””
I sat down slowly.
“You knew Margaret?””
“I did. She was kind to me. She used to bring me coffee during the night shifts because she knew I was working two jobs.””
Catherine swallowed.
“After Evelyn was born, I noticed that one of the hospital administrators was asking unusual questions about the family trust. I reported it to my supervisor.””
“And then?”” Daniel asked.
“Two nights later, Evelyn disappeared.””
I felt my hands begin to tremble.
Catherine continued.
“The hospital claimed that Margaret had signed a temporary custody authorization. I knew it was false because I had watched Margaret refuse to sign it. She told me she would never surrender either child.””
“Why didn't you tell the police?””
“I did. But the report was closed. The administrator said the baby had died during transport.””
I stared at her.
“And you believed them?””
“No.””
Her answer came immediately.
“I saw the transport records. The vehicle never arrived at the receiving hospital. The driver was dismissed the following week. And the administrator who signed the authorization was Arthur Carter.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Michael's father.””
Catherine nodded.
“Arthur had been trying to gain control of the family trust for years. He believed the shares should belong to him because he had helped manage the company.””
“But why take Evelyn?”” I asked.
“Because the trust required the consent of both children before the controlling shares could be released. Arthur believed that if Evelyn disappeared, he could eventually challenge the arrangement.””
Daniel frowned.
“That doesn't make sense. If she was presumed dead, wouldn't her shares remain protected?””
“Exactly,” Catherine replied.
“That was the problem. Margaret refused to accept the death certificate. She hired investigators and challenged every document. Arthur couldn't access the trust while the case remained open.””
I remembered Eleanor's explanation.
Margaret had spent years searching for our daughter.
“Then how did Michael become involved?”” I asked.
Catherine's expression darkened.
“After Arthur died, Michael found his father's records. He discovered that Evelyn was alive and that the trust still existed. He began searching for her.””
“Did he find her?””
“Yes.””
“When?””
Daniel looked stunned.
Catherine nodded.
“He contacted me. He said he wanted to reunite Evelyn with her family. I believed him at first.””
“What changed?””
“He asked me to sign documents transferring my parental rights to him. When I refused, he threatened to expose my role in the original investigation.””
I stared at her.
“Your role?””
Catherine lowered her eyes.
“I helped Arthur take Evelyn from the hospital.””
The room went silent.
Daniel stood.
“You helped steal my sister?””
Catherine flinched.
“I was twenty-six. Arthur told me Margaret had agreed to place the baby with another family because she was too ill to care for twins. He showed me a document with her signature.””
“You believed him?””
“I wanted to believe him. I was struggling financially, and Arthur offered me money to help arrange the transfer. I told myself I was giving the baby a better life.””
Daniel's face twisted with anger.
“You took money to help steal a newborn.””
“Yes.””
“And then you spent twenty years pretending you were searching for her?””
Catherine began crying.
“I did search for her. I tried to find her after I learned the truth. But Arthur had threatened my family. He told me he'd make sure I went to prison if I spoke.””
“You could have gone to the police.””
“I should have.””
She wiped her face.
“I have regretted it every day since.””
I looked at the documents.
Some part of me wanted to hate her.
She had helped take my daughter from us. She had participated in a crime that had devastated Margaret.
But I could also see the truth in her expression.
She wasn't asking us to forgive her.
She was finally admitting what she had done.
“Where was Evelyn taken?”” I asked.
Catherine opened another file.
“She was placed with a family in Ohio. They believed she had been abandoned by a mother who couldn't care for her.””
“Did they know she had a twin brother?””
“No.””
“Did they know Margaret was searching for her?””
“No.””
Daniel looked down at the photographs.
“Then how did Michael find her?””
“Through the trust records. He discovered that a child had been placed under a different surname. He used private investigators to locate her.””
“And the baby we found at the nursery?””
Catherine nodded.
“That is Evelyn.””
I felt a rush of relief, followed by a new wave of confusion.
“But Vanessa said the baby was Michael's daughter.””
“Michael told her that because it made the guardianship application easier. He claimed he was the child's biological father and that the mother had abandoned her.””
Daniel shook his head.
“So he was pretending to be her father to gain control of the trust.””
“Yes.””
Catherine leaned forward.
“But there's something else you need to understand. Evelyn isn't the only person Michael was trying to control.””
I looked at her.
“What do you mean?””
“Michael discovered that Margaret had made a second amendment to the trust shortly before she died. The amendment named Daniel as the sole temporary guardian of any surviving minor beneficiary until a court could verify the child's identity.””
Daniel stared at her.
“Me?””
Catherine nodded.
“Margaret trusted you to protect your sister.””
I felt tears sting my eyes.
Even in death, Margaret had been trying to bring our family back together.
She had left Daniel a responsibility he never knew existed.
Then Catherine reached into her folder and removed a small photograph.
It showed Margaret standing beside a woman in a hospital corridor.
The woman was holding a baby.
On the back, Margaret had written:
If Robert ever finds this, tell him I never stopped looking.
I pressed the photograph against my chest.
For twenty years, I had thought my wife had left this world with no secrets between us.
Now I understood that she had been carrying a grief too painful to share.
Daniel sat down beside me.
“Dad, we need to see Evelyn.””
Catherine nodded.
“The police are arranging a supervised visit. But before you meet her, there's something else you should know.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
Catherine hesitated.
“Michael didn't discover Evelyn by accident. Someone inside the trust administration gave him access to the sealed records.””
Daniel frowned.
“Who?””
Catherine turned to the last page in her folder.
A signature appeared beneath the authorization.
I recognized it immediately.
Eleanor Whitmore.
My stomach dropped.
“That can't be right.””
Catherine looked at me sadly.
“Eleanor says she was deceived. She claims someone used her credentials without permission.””
Daniel stood.
“Then we need to ask her.””
My phone rang before I could answer.
It was Eleanor.
I picked up.
“Robert, thank goodness. I've been trying to reach you.””
“Did you give Michael access to the trust records?””
Silence.
Then Eleanor whispered, “Yes.””
I felt the room tilt.
“Why?””
“Because he came to me with a court order. He claimed he was acting on behalf of Evelyn's biological family. I believed him.””
“You gave him the records without verifying the order?””
“I made a terrible mistake.””
Daniel snatched the phone.
“Did you know he was planning to steal the shares?””
“No.””
“Did you know he had kidnapped Vanessa?””
“No.””
“Did you know he had lied about being Evelyn's father?””
Eleanor's voice broke.
“No, Daniel. I swear I didn't.””
Daniel looked at me.
Then he asked the question that made Eleanor stop breathing.
“Did you know my mother had another child?””
A long silence followed.
Finally, Eleanor said, “Yes.””
I closed my eyes.
The room seemed to shrink around me.
Eleanor continued in a trembling voice.
“Margaret told me everything. She made me promise that if Evelyn was ever found, I would protect her identity until the family was ready.””
Daniel's voice was barely audible.
“Then why didn't you tell us?””
“Because Margaret believed that the person who took Evelyn was still watching the family. She thought that revealing the truth too early would put both children in danger.””
I looked at Catherine.
She was crying silently.
For twenty years, the truth had been hidden behind forged signatures, sealed documents, and frightened people.
Now it was finally coming into the open.
But Eleanor's next words changed everything again.
“Robert, there's something else. The trust administrator has just contacted me. The original ownership certificate is missing.””
I gripped the phone.
“Missing?””
“Yes. Someone removed it from the vault before the police arrived.””
Daniel's face hardened.
“Who had access?””
Eleanor hesitated.
“Only three people were authorized to enter the vault.””
“Who?””
“Me. The bank custodian. And the person who presented the silver key.””
I looked at Daniel.
Neither of us had entered the vault.
Michael had taken the key, but the police recovered it before he could leave.
Unless someone had opened the vault earlier.
Someone who knew the trust existed.
Someone who had been waiting for the right moment to claim the inheritance.
Eleanor whispered the name.
“Catherine Whitmore.””
I turned toward the woman across the table.
She had gone completely still.
Then she slowly reached into her coat pocket.
And placed a folded document on the table.
“I can explain,” she said.
Daniel stared at her.
“Explain what?””
Catherine looked at me with tears in her eyes.
“I didn't steal the certificate.””
May you like
She swallowed.
“I took it twenty years ago, because Margaret asked me to.””
