Chapter 7: The Baby Who Was Never Supposed to Exist

Daniel stared at the photograph until his phone nearly slipped from his hand.

The newborn lay in Vanessa's arms, wrapped in a pale pink blanket. A hospital bracelet circled her tiny wrist. The date printed beneath the photograph was three months earlier.

Daniel looked at me.

“Dad, this has to be fake.””

I wanted to agree.

I wanted to believe that someone had stolen an old photograph, altered the date, and sent it to destroy what remained of my son's sanity.

But the woman in the photograph was unmistakably Vanessa.

And the baby wore a name that made my chest tighten.

Margaret Hayes.

My wife's name.

“Call her,” I said.

Daniel immediately pressed Vanessa's number.

She answered after the first ring.

“Daniel?””

“Where are you?””

“At home. Why?””

“I'm looking at a photograph of you holding a newborn baby in a hospital.””

Silence.

Then a faint, shaky breath.

“Who sent you that?””

“Answer me.””

“Daniel, please. I can explain.””

“Were you pregnant three months ago?””

“Of course not.””

“Then whose baby is that?””

Vanessa began crying.

“I can't do this over the phone.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Then do it in person. Tell me the truth.””

“Michael said you wouldn't find out.””

Those seven words changed everything.

Daniel lowered the phone slightly.

I could hear Vanessa breathing on the other end.

“What did Michael say?”” Daniel demanded.

She began sobbing.

“He told me the baby was connected to the inheritance. He said if I helped him, he would make sure she was safe.””

“Safe from whom?””

“I don't know!””

“Stop lying!””

“I am not lying!””

Daniel's voice rose.

“You've lied about my father, the money, the company, and the pregnancy. Why should I believe anything you say?””

Vanessa went quiet.

Then she whispered, “Because the baby is your sister.””

Daniel froze.

I felt as if someone had struck me in the chest.

“My what?”” he asked.

“Your sister.””

“That's impossible. My mother died twenty years ago.””

“I know.””

“Then explain how I have a newborn sister named after my mother!””

Vanessa's next words were almost inaudible.

“Because she isn't my baby.””

Daniel stared at the phone.

“Whose baby is she?””

Vanessa took a ragged breath.

“She's Michael's daughter.””

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then Daniel asked, “Why is she wearing my mother's name?””

“Because Michael said it was the only way to protect her.””

“Protect her from what?””

“I don't know, Daniel. I swear I don't know everything.””

I took the phone from my son.

“Vanessa, this is Robert. Listen to me carefully. Where is that child now?””

“At a private care facility.””

“What facility?””

“I can't tell you.””

“Why not?””

“Because Michael said he'd take her away if I told anyone.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Is he threatening you?””

“Yes.””

“Then tell the police.””

“No!””

Her scream echoed through the receiver.

Then she lowered her voice.

“You don't understand what he's capable of. He has documents proving that the baby belongs to a trust connected to your family. He says if I betray him, he'll use those papers to take her away permanently.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face had become frighteningly still.

“Vanessa,” I said, “you have one chance to tell us the truth. Why did you help Michael steal Margaret's money?””

“I didn't know what he was doing at first.””

“When did you find out?””

“After the first transfer attempt.””

“Then why didn't you stop him?””

She began crying again.

“Because he'd already taken something from me.””

“What?””

“My passport. My bank cards. He said I owed him for the money he'd spent helping my father.””

I remembered the three hundred thousand dollars she had admitted moving.

“Your father received the money?””

“No. Michael told me he did, but I later found out that wasn't true. He used my father's name to create an account.””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Then why did you keep helping him?””

Vanessa's answer came in a whisper.

“Because he showed me a video of the baby.””

The call suddenly crackled.

Then a man's voice interrupted.

“That's enough, Vanessa.””

Daniel's eyes widened.

Michael.

Vanessa screamed, “Don't touch me!””

The line went dead.

Daniel immediately called back.

The phone rang six times before going to voicemail.

He tried again.

Nothing.

I took his arm.

“Son, we need the police.””

He shook his head.

“We need to find that baby first.””

“We can't just rush into this.””

“Dad, someone has a newborn child hidden somewhere, and Michael is threatening the woman who knows where she is.””

“I understand.””

“No, you don't!”” His voice broke.

“If that baby is somehow connected to Mom's inheritance, Michael could be using her to control Vanessa. And if Vanessa is telling the truth, she might be the only person who knows where he took her.””

I couldn't argue with that.

We drove back toward the house, calling the police on the way. Daniel gave them the details of the threat, the forged documents, and the possible location of a missing infant.

The dispatcher told us officers were being sent to Vanessa's address.

When we arrived, the front door stood open.

A lamp had been knocked over in the hallway.

Maria was standing in the kitchen, clutching a dish towel.

“Mr. Daniel!”” she cried.

“You need to see this.””

She led us into the living room.

Vanessa's handbag lay on the floor, its contents scattered across the carpet. A broken picture frame rested beside the sofa.

But Vanessa was gone.

On the coffee table lay a single sheet of paper.

Daniel picked it up.

The message was typed in capital letters.

*STOP LOOKING FOR THE BABY. STOP LOOKING FOR THE MONEY. IF YOU WANT YOUR WIFE ALIVE, BRING THE SILVER KEY TO THE OLD TRAIN STATION AT MIDNIGHT. COME ALONE.*

Daniel read the message twice.

Then he turned toward me.

“They know we found the key.””

I looked down at the silver object in my hand.

The key Margaret had hidden beneath the oak tree.

The key that supposedly opened a private vault containing her family's inheritance.

And now the same key was being demanded in exchange for Vanessa's life.

Daniel reached for it.

“I'm going.””

I closed my fist around the key.

“No.””

“Dad—”

“You are not walking into a trap alone.””

“They said to come alone.””

“Michael has already proven that he doesn't keep his promises.””

Daniel looked at the note again.

Then his phone vibrated.

A video had arrived from an unknown number.

He pressed play.

The footage showed Vanessa sitting in a dark room, her hands tied to the arms of a chair. She looked exhausted and frightened.

Behind her, Michael stepped into view.

He leaned down beside her and smiled directly at the camera.

“Daniel,” he said, “you have until midnight. Bring the key, or your wife disappears.””

He paused.

Then he added something that made my blood run cold.

“And Robert? If you involve the police, I'll make sure the world learns what really happened to Margaret.””

The video ended.

Daniel looked at me.

I couldn't speak.

Because Michael had just threatened to reveal something about my dead wife.

Something I had never known.

May you like

Something Margaret had apparently spent her final years trying to hide.

And as I stared at the silver key, I realized the truth might be far more dangerous than anything we had uncovered so far.
