The Candle That Knew My Name / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11: The Truth Beneath the Memory

The house became a maze of shadows.

Nobody moved.

Not because we didn’t want to.

Because everyone was listening.

Waiting.

A floorboard creaked upstairs.

Then another.

Eli grabbed Maya’s hand.

Marcus looked toward the staircase.

Damian looked terrified.

That surprised me.

Because Damian Cross was not supposed to be afraid.

He was the person everyone feared.

But now he looked like a man who had seen a ghost.

I whispered:

“Who is upstairs?””

Nobody answered.

The footsteps stopped.

Then a voice came down.

“You all have been making this harder than it needed to be.””

My blood froze.

I knew that voice.

Not from recently.

From somewhere buried.

Somewhere damaged.

I looked at Damian.

His face had gone pale.

“Impossible.””

The person slowly walked down the stairs.

And when he stepped into the light, everything inside me stopped.

Because I knew him.

I knew his face.

I knew his voice.

But I didn’t know why.

An older man.

Gray hair.

Scar across his cheek.

A calm expression.

Marcus whispered:

“No…”

I looked at him.

“You know him.””

Marcus looked like he had seen the end of the world.

“That’s not possible.””

The man smiled.

“Hello, Marcus.””

I stared.

“Who are you?””

The man looked at me.

And his answer changed everything.

“I’m the reason you survived.””

Silence.

My heart pounded.

“What?””

He stepped closer.

“My name is Adrian Vale.””

Marcus shook his head.

“Your brother died.””

The man smiled.

“No.””

My eyes moved between them.

Brother?

“What is happening?””

Adrian looked at me.

“You really don’t remember anything.””

I hated that sentence.

I hated how often I heard it.

But this time…

I felt something.

A crack in the wall inside my mind.

A memory.

A voice.

A promise.

“Bear.””

I stumbled backward.

Maya caught my arm.

“What did you see?””

I looked at Adrian.

“My brother?””

Adrian nodded.

“Your brother-in-law.””

I froze.

“What?””

He looked at Maya.

“She never told you?””

Maya looked terrified.

“Adrian…”

My breathing changed.

“What are you saying?””

Adrian smiled sadly.

“Maya was my sister.””

The room went silent.

I looked at her.

She couldn’t look at me.

My mind raced.

All these years.

All these secrets.

Everyone was connected.

“You knew him?””

I pointed at Damian.

Adrian looked at him.

“Of course.””

Damian stepped back.

“You weren’t supposed to come back.””

Adrian smiled.

“Neither was he.””

He pointed at me.

My anger exploded.

“Enough.””

Everyone stopped.

I looked around.

“I want the truth.””

Nobody spoke.

So I continued.

“Not pieces.””

My voice shook.

“Not protection.””

“Not lies.””

I looked at Marcus.

“I want everything.””

Then Maya.

“Everything.””

Then Damian.

“And you.””

Finally Adrian.

“You too.””

Adrian nodded.

“Fair.””

He walked toward the table.

“The night of the crash, Damian wanted your company.””

I looked at Damian.

He didn’t deny it.

“He wanted control.””

Adrian continued.

“But he made one mistake.””

“What?””

“He underestimated Maya.””

Maya looked down.

“She found out.””

Adrian nodded.

“She discovered Damian’s plan.””

I looked at Maya.

“You knew?””

She whispered:

“Yes.””

“And you didn’t tell me?””

“I tried.””

Her voice broke.

“But by then, they were already watching.””

Adrian continued.

“The crash was meant to scare you.””

My jaw tightened.

“Not kill me.””

“No.””

He looked at Damian.

“But someone changed the plan.””

Everyone looked at him.

Damian’s expression shifted.

“What?””

Adrian smiled.

“Damian didn’t know.””

The room went silent.

“You weren’t the mastermind.””

Damian looked furious.

“Don’t lie.””

“I’m not.””

Adrian looked at me.

“The person who ordered your disappearance was someone you trusted more than anyone.””

My heart stopped.

No.

Not again.

Someone closer.

Someone I loved.

I looked around.

Maya.

Marcus.

Damian.

Adrian.

My mind searched through every face from my past.

Then Adrian reached into his coat.

He pulled out a small recorder.

Old.

Damaged.

He placed it on the table.

“This is the conversation you were never supposed to hear.””

He pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a voice.

My voice.

Younger.

Angry.

And then another voice answered.

A voice I recognized instantly.

Because it was impossible.

The recording played:

“Bear can never know the truth.””

My body went cold.

May you like

Because the voice belonged to…

me.
