The Candle That Knew My Name / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12: The Voice I Couldn’t Remember

Nobody spoke after the recording ended.

The silence was worse than any scream.

I stared at the old recorder on the table.

Waiting for someone to explain.

Waiting for someone to tell me I misunderstood.

Nobody did.

Because everyone looked afraid.

Even Maya.

Even Marcus.

Even Damian.

Especially Adrian.

I looked at him.

“What was that?””

He didn’t answer.

I stepped closer.

“What was that?””

Adrian sighed.

“That was you.””

“No.””

My voice came out immediately.

“No.””

I looked at Marcus.

“You heard it.””

He looked away.

That hurt more than anything.

Because Marcus always looked at me.

Even when he lied.

Even when he was afraid.

But now he couldn’t.

“What did I say?””

Adrian looked at the recorder.

“You were making a deal.””

My stomach tightened.

“With who?””

Adrian looked at Damian.

“With everyone in this room.””

I laughed.

“No.””

The memory came again.

A flash.

A room.

A table.

Angry voices.

My own voice.

But it wasn’t enough.

Not complete.

“I would remember.””

Adrian shook his head.

“That was the point.””

I stared.

“What?””

“The accident didn’t just damage your memory.””

He stepped closer.

“Someone made sure the missing pieces stayed missing.””

My hands shook.

“Who?””

Nobody answered.

Then Maya whispered:

“You.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Tears filled her eyes.

“You asked us to.””

The words broke something inside me.

“I asked you?””

She nodded.

“You told us if anything happened…”

She stopped.

“Tell me.””

Her voice cracked.

“You told us to hide Eli.””

I stared.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“Why would I do that?””

Maya looked at Eli.

“Because you knew someone was coming.””

I looked at my son.

Everything became blurry.

The boy I had spent my life not knowing.

The child I thought had been stolen from me.

But what if…

What if I was the one who hid him?

No.

I shook my head.

“No.””

Marcus finally spoke.

“Bear.””

I turned.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“Don’t defend me.””

His face changed.

“You deserve the truth.””

The anger disappeared.

Only pain remained.

“The night before the crash, you found out Damian wasn’t working alone.””

I looked at him.

“With who?””

Marcus swallowed.

“You never told me the name.””

“Why?””

“Because you said if I knew, I’d try to fix it.””

He looked down.

“And you were afraid I’d die.””

The room was spinning.

I looked at the recorder.

“Play it again.””

Adrian pressed the button.

Static.

Then my voice.

“If I forget…”

A pause.

“If I forget, keep him safe.””

My breathing stopped.

My voice continued.

“Don’t let anyone tell him who I am until it’s safe.””

The recording ended.

I couldn’t move.

Eli looked at me.

“Why?””

One word.

That was all.

Why?

I had no answer.

I walked toward him slowly.

But he stepped back.

That hurt more than anything.

“I don’t know.””

The honesty broke my voice.

“I don’t know why.””

Maya moved toward him.

But I stopped her.

“No.””

I looked at Eli.

“He deserves to hear me.””

My eyes filled.

“I don’t remember being that man.””

Eli looked down.

“But he was my dad.””

The words cut deep.

Because he was right.

Some version of me had made choices.

Some version of me had loved him enough to hide him.

Some version of me had known this day would come.

Adrian picked up the recorder.

“There’s one more thing.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He turned it over.

A hidden compartment opened.

Inside was a small piece of paper.

A name.

A single name.

The person who started everything.

The person I had been protecting myself from.

Adrian handed it to me.

I read it.

And the world stopped.

Because the name written there was not Damian.

Not Marcus.

Not anyone I expected.

May you like

It was:

*Bear.*
