The Candle That Knew My Name / Chapter 7 / 15

Chapter 7: The Man Behind the Crash

Darkness swallowed the garage.

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

The only sound was Eli’s small hand tightening around mine.

The old building creaked around us. Wind pushed through broken windows. Somewhere outside, metal scraped against concrete.

Marcus moved first.

“Everyone down.””

His voice was different.

Not the confident voice of the man who used to run a motorcycle shop.

Not the voice of someone who thought he had control.

This was the voice of someone who had spent years expecting this exact moment.

I pulled Eli behind an old workbench.

Tasha crouched beside us.

Marcus reached toward the wall.

A small click.

Then emergency lights flickered on.

The weak red glow made everyone look like strangers.

I stared at him.

“You had backup power?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

“You knew this could happen.””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

My anger returned instantly.

“You knew someone was watching this place?””

“Yes.””

“You knew someone was watching Maya?””

His silence was enough.

I stepped forward.

“You knew.””

Marcus looked away.

“I knew there were people looking.””

“People?””

My voice rose.

“Stop talking like this is some mystery. Someone tried to kill me. Someone took my son from me. Someone made Maya disappear.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

“I know.””

“No, you don’t.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

“You had seventeen years with the truth.””

The room became quiet.

“You got to know he existed.””

I pointed at Eli.

“You got to know he was alive.””

My throat tightened.

“I got nothing.””

Eli looked down.

That hurt.

Because he was hearing everything.

A child should not have to watch adults argue about whether he was wanted.

I lowered my voice.

“Eli, go with Tasha for a minute.””

He looked at me.

“Are you leaving?””

The question stopped me.

“No.””

I knelt down.

“I’m right here.””

He studied my face.

Then nodded.

Tasha guided him toward the back room.

When they were gone, I looked at Marcus.

“Start talking.””

Marcus sat on an old chair.

For the first time, he looked tired.

Really tired.

“The night of the crash, you weren’t riding home.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“You told everyone you were going home.””

“I was.””

“No.””

Marcus shook his head.

“You were meeting someone.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“Maya.””

The name hit me.

“I don’t remember.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked at the floor.

“Because after the crash, they made sure you wouldn’t.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus leaned forward.

“You woke up in the hospital with no memory of the last year.””

I nodded slowly.

“I remember.””

“You remember doctors telling you that.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What are you saying?””

Marcus looked directly at me.

“I’m saying the doctors weren’t the only ones in that hospital.””

Silence.

“Someone paid them.””

The room seemed to tilt.

“Who?””

Marcus hesitated.

I slammed my hand against the table.

“Who?””

He whispered one name.

“Damian Cross.””

The name meant nothing.

But the way Marcus said it meant everything.

“Who is that?””

“Someone who wanted your business.””

I stared.

“My shop?””

“Your shop. Your routes. Your connections.””

Marcus swallowed.

“And Maya.””

My jaw tightened.

“Why her?””

“Because she knew.””

“Knew what?””

Marcus looked toward the room where Eli was waiting.

“She knew Eli existed.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“She would have told me.””

“She tried.””

My chest tightened.

Marcus continued.

“The night you were supposed to meet her, she was going to tell you she was pregnant.””

The words felt impossible.

I looked down.

Forty-two years.

A lifetime.

A child.

My son.

And I had missed everything.

Marcus rubbed his face.

“I arrived after the crash.””

“Why?””

“Because Maya called me.””

I froze.

“She called you?””

“Yes.””

“What did she say?””

Marcus looked at me.

“She said someone followed you.””

The garage went silent.

I remembered headlights.

Rain.

The feeling of being watched.

A motorcycle engine behind me.

A voice shouting.

Then nothing.

Marcus stood.

“She begged me to find you.””

“And?””

“And when I got there…”

He stopped.

“What?””

His eyes became darker.

“There was someone already there.””

My heart started pounding.

“Who?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked toward an old cabinet.

He unlocked it.

Inside was a file.

Thick.

Old.

He placed it on the table.

“I kept this because I knew one day you would ask.””

I opened it.

The first page was a hospital report.

The second was a police document.

The third was a photograph.

A man standing outside the hospital.

I stared.

Because I recognized him.

Not Damian Cross.

Someone else.

Someone closer.

Someone who had been beside me for years.

I looked at Marcus.

“Why is he in this file?””

Marcus’s face went pale.

“Because he was there the night you crashed.””

I looked back at the photograph.

My hands started shaking.

The man standing outside the hospital was smiling.

And underneath the photograph was a name.

A name I never expected.

Tasha’s voice suddenly came from behind us.

“Bear…”

I turned.

She was holding her phone.

Her face was terrified.

“What?””

She looked at the screen.

“I found Maya.””

Everything stopped.

I moved toward her.

“Where?””

She turned the phone around.

A message.

An address.

May you like

And one sentence.

*“Come alone if you want the truth.””*
