The Candle That Knew My Name / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13: The Enemy Inside My Own Mind

I stared at the name.

My name.

Bear.

Written on the paper like a confession.

Like a warning.

Like a message from someone who knew the truth before I did.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The room felt unreal.

The walls.

The people.

The life I thought I understood.

Everything had become a question.

I looked at Adrian.

“What does this mean?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me.

Because Adrian always seemed like the person who knew everything.

The one person who had been pulling the strings behind the curtain.

But now…

He looked tired.

“It means you were closer to the truth than anyone.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“No, I’m not doing this.””

I threw the paper onto the table.

“I’m not accepting that I was the reason everything happened.””

Maya stepped toward me.

“Bear—”

“No.””

I looked at her.

“You spent seventeen years keeping my son from me.””

Her eyes filled with pain.

“I know.””

“You watched me live like I had nothing.””

“I know.””

“And now you’re telling me I asked you to?””

She nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt because it was simple.

No excuses.

No lies.

Just truth.

I turned away.

The window reflected my face back at me.

Older.

Tired.

A stranger.

“Who was I?””

Nobody answered.

So I asked again.

“Who was I before I forgot?””

Adrian walked closer.

“You were someone who wanted to destroy Damian.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because you found out what he was doing.””

“What was he doing?””

Adrian looked at Damian.

For the first time, Damian looked small.

Not powerful.

Not dangerous.

Just a man who had been caught.

“He was stealing from you.””

Damian looked away.

Adrian continued.

“Your company. Your contracts. Your reputation.””

I looked at Damian.

“You wanted my life.””

Damian didn’t deny it.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

“You admit it?””

He looked at me.

“I hated you.””

The room became silent.

“Why?””

Damian laughed softly.

“Because everyone loved you.””

I frowned.

“That’s your reason?””

“No.””

His expression changed.

“You don’t remember what you did.””

Again.

Those words.

I stepped closer.

“Tell me.””

Damian stared at me.

“Before you became the man everyone respected…”

He paused.

“You were ruthless.””

My jaw tightened.

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

He looked at Marcus.

“Tell him.””

Marcus closed his eyes.

I turned.

“Marcus?””

He took a slow breath.

“Bear…”

“Tell me.””

Marcus looked at me.

“You weren’t always the person you became.””

The words landed hard.

“You were angry.””

I looked down.

“I lost my brother.””

Marcus nodded.

“You lost a lot.””

A memory flashed.

A younger me.

A funeral.

A promise.

A voice saying:

“Make them pay.””

I grabbed the edge of the table.

The room spun.

Maya caught my arm.

“Bear.””

I pulled away.

“What did I do?””

Nobody answered.

Finally, Marcus spoke.

“You found out Damian was stealing from you.””

“And?””

“You confronted him.””

“Then?””

Marcus looked at Damian.

“You threatened him.””

Damian smiled sadly.

“You didn’t just threaten me.””

I stared.

“What did I do?””

“You told me you would destroy everyone I cared about.””

Silence.

I looked at my hands.

Hands that had built.

Hands that had broken.

Could I have really been that person?

Adrian stepped closer.

“But that wasn’t the whole story.””

Everyone looked at him.

“The person who changed Bear wasn’t Damian.””

I looked up.

“Then who?””

Adrian pointed to the recorder.

“The recording.””

I frowned.

“What about it?””

“It was incomplete.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

Adrian nodded.

“There was another part.””

He reached into his coat.

Another recording.

My breathing slowed.

“No.””

Adrian pressed play.

Static.

Then my voice.

Older.

Tired.

“If you’re hearing this…”

A pause.

“Something went wrong.””

My body froze.

The voice sounded different.

Not angry.

Afraid.

“I know what I did.””

The recording continued.

“I know what people will think.””

I closed my eyes.

My own voice.

My own confession.

“But I wasn’t trying to hurt them.””

Maya covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“I was trying to protect them from me.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Adrian.

“What does that mean?””

He looked at me.

“It means you knew you were being manipulated.””

The recording played again.

“I found out Damian wasn’t the only problem.””

A pause.

“He was working for someone else.””

My heartbeat increased.

Someone else.

Someone bigger.

Someone who had been hidden.

The recording continued.

“And the only way to keep my family alive…”

Static.

Then:

“Was to make everyone believe I disappeared.””

The recording stopped.

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Maya.

“You knew.””

She nodded through tears.

“Yes.””

I looked at Eli.

“And him?””

Maya whispered:

“You were protecting him.””

My chest tightened.

The boy I thought I lost.

The boy I thought everyone took from me.

I had hidden him.

I had sacrificed myself.

But one question remained.

I looked at Adrian.

“Who was I protecting them from?””

Adrian’s expression changed.

Fear.

Real fear.

He looked toward the window.

Then whispered:

“The person who has been watching us this entire time.””

A shadow moved outside.

Everyone froze.

May you like

Adrian whispered:

“He found us.””
