Chapter 14: The Last Lie
The sound outside was quiet.
Too quiet.
That was what made it terrifying.
No shouting.
No threats.
No dramatic entrance.
Just footsteps.
Slow.
Certain.
Like whoever was outside already knew how this would end.
Marcus moved toward the door.
I grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Bear.””
I shook my head.
“Not again.””
For years, everyone had protected me.
Everyone had made decisions.
Everyone had hidden things.
Not anymore.
I stepped forward.
Maya grabbed my hand.
“Don’t.””
I looked at her.
“I spent my whole life running from something I couldn’t remember.””
My voice softened.
“I’m done running.””
I opened the door.
The person standing outside wasn’t what I expected.
An older man.
Gray hair.
Simple clothes.
No weapon.
No anger.
Just exhaustion.
My breath caught.
Because I knew him.
Not from memories.
From photographs.
From stories.
From the pieces of my broken life.
“Dad?””
Eli’s voice came from behind me.
Everyone froze.
The man looked at Eli.
Then at me.
And whispered:
“I’m sorry.””
My world stopped.
My father.
The man I believed had died before I became an adult.
The man whose absence shaped everything.
He stepped inside.
Nobody spoke.
Then Adrian moved forward.
“You knew.””
My father looked at him.
“Yes.””
Marcus looked furious.
“How?””
My father looked at me.
“Because I helped create the plan.””
The words were devastating.
I stared.
“What plan?””
He looked broken.
“The plan to make Bear disappear.””
I couldn’t breathe.
“You?””
He nodded.
“I was the one who told you to forget.””
My hands shook.
“Why?””
He looked at Eli.
“Because you were going to get yourself killed.””
The anger inside me burned.
“You took my life.””
“No.””
His voice cracked.
“I saved it.””
I laughed bitterly.
“By letting me lose everything?””
He stepped closer.
“You don’t remember the night before the crash.””
“No.””
“Good.””
I stared.
“Good?””
“Yes.””
His eyes filled.
“Because if you remembered, you would have gone after them.””
“Who?””
He looked around the room.
At Damian.
At Marcus.
At Maya.
Then back at me.
“The people who killed your brother.””
Silence.
My father continued.
“Your brother discovered Damian’s operation.””
I looked at Adrian.
“He knew?””
Adrian nodded.
“He was trying to expose them.””
My father swallowed.
“And they killed him.””
The room became cold.
I felt something inside me break.
All these years, I thought my anger came from losing a business.
A relationship.
A future.
But it came from something deeper.
A wound I never understood.
My father continued.
“You wanted revenge.””
I looked away.
“I was angry.””
“You were dangerous.””
The words hurt because they were true.
“You were willing to destroy yourself.””
He looked at Maya.
“And everyone around you.””
I looked at her.
She nodded.
“You scared me.””
The honesty hurt.
“But I never stopped loving you.””
My eyes filled.
The man I thought abandoned me had protected me.
The people I thought betrayed me had sacrificed for me.
The enemy I hated had been only part of the story.
Then Damian spoke.
“So what now?””
Everyone looked at him.
He laughed quietly.
“You all think this changes anything?””
My father looked at him.
“You lost.””
Damian shook his head.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“He still doesn’t know the final truth.””
My stomach tightened.
“What final truth?””
Damian smiled.
The same smile that started everything.
“Your memory didn’t disappear because of the crash.””
Nobody moved.
I felt cold.
“What?””
Damian stepped closer.
“You erased it yourself.””
The room went silent.
I shook my head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
He pointed at me.
“You made the choice.””
A memory flashed.
A room.
A mirror.
A needle.
My own hand.
My own voice.
“Take it away.””
I stumbled backward.
“No.””
Damian whispered:
“You didn’t forget because someone stole your past.””
A pause.
“You forgot because you couldn’t live with what you did.””
I looked at everyone.
Maya.
Marcus.
My father.
Adrian.
Then Eli.
The boy I had spent my whole life trying to find.
And suddenly I remembered one thing.
One sentence.
One final piece.
I had not disappeared to protect them.
May you like
I had disappeared because I was protecting them…
from me.
