Chapter 11: The Woman Behind the Plan

The email Daniel had brought changed our investigation.

Evelyn immediately arranged for a forensic examination of the document and requested the original email records through the appropriate legal process.

Daniel also agreed to provide a formal statement.

But Vanessa wasn't waiting.

On Tuesday morning, a courier delivered an envelope to my office.

Inside was a letter from Victoria Shaw's firm.

It accused me of interfering with Daniel's relationship with his daughter and warned that the Carter family might pursue legal action if I continued making allegations against Richard Reed.

I read it twice.

Then I called Evelyn.

“She's threatening me.””

“Don't respond.””

“She's accusing me of alienating Lily from Daniel.””

“Amara, that's a common allegation in contentious parenting disputes. It doesn't make it true.””

I looked at the letter.

“They're trying to make me look unreasonable.””

“Then don't give them anything they can use.””

She paused.

“Keep following the parenting schedule. Continue allowing appropriate supervised contact. Document every communication.””

I nodded.

“What about the forged agreement?””

“We're making progress.””

“How?””

“Victoria's firm has confirmed that the document was stored in an electronic case folder created three years ago. They haven't explained why it was connected to a Reed Capital transaction.””

I sat back.

“So they admit they had it.””

“They admit the file exists. That's not the same as admitting responsibility.””

I looked out the window.

“Find out who created it.””

Two days later, Vanessa requested a meeting.

She wanted to speak privately.

Evelyn advised me not to attend alone, so we arranged to meet in a public hotel lounge with her present.

Vanessa arrived wearing a black dress and oversized sunglasses.

She removed them when she saw us.

“Amara.””

“Vanessa.””

She looked at Evelyn.

“I'm surprised you brought a lawyer.””

Evelyn smiled politely.

“I'm surprised you requested a meeting involving a legal dispute without expecting one.””

Vanessa ignored her.

“I wanted to clear up a misunderstanding.””

I waited.

She stirred her coffee.

“Daniel has been telling you things that aren't entirely accurate.””

“Which things?””

“About the trust. About the acquisition. About my father.””

“Be specific.””

She placed her spoon down.

“Richard wants what's best for Lily.””

“Then he should leave her alone.””

Vanessa sighed.

“You're making this unnecessarily difficult.””

I looked at her.

“You sent an email discussing how to reduce my daughter's time with me.””

Her expression tightened.

“I was discussing a hypothetical arrangement.””

“You called it a transition plan.””

“Because Daniel is her father.””

“And I'm her mother.””

Vanessa leaned closer.

“Amara, you have to understand that Daniel comes from a very wealthy family. Lily could have access to opportunities you can't provide.””

I stared at her.

“You know nothing about what I can provide.””

She gave a small laugh.

“You own restaurants. That's impressive. But you're still one bad investment away from losing everything.””

Evelyn interrupted.

“Ms. Reed, I suggest you avoid making financial threats.””

Vanessa ignored her.

“I'm not threatening anyone. I'm being realistic.””

I picked up my cup.

“Then let's be realistic. Why did you agree to marry Daniel?””

Her eyes flickered.

“Because I love him.””

“Did you know about the twelve-million-dollar trust before you met him?””

She stopped moving.

It was only a second.

But I saw it.

“Of course not.””

“Your father knew.””

“Everyone knows my father manages investments.””

“Did you know Lily would become the beneficiary?””

Vanessa looked toward the window.

Then she lowered her voice.

“Listen carefully, Amara. You don't understand how these families operate.””

“I understand enough.””

“Daniel is entitled to a relationship with his daughter.””

“Yes.””

“And you can't keep him away forever.””

“I haven't.””

She smiled.

“Good. Because if you continue resisting, people will start asking whether you're capable of putting Lily's interests ahead of your own.””

I stood.

“Are you finished?””

Vanessa looked up.

“I'm trying to help you.””

“No. You're trying to convince me that giving up control is the same as being a good mother.””

I turned toward the exit.

Evelyn followed.

Behind us, Vanessa called out.

“One day, Lily will know how much you took from her.””

I stopped.

Then I turned around.

“One day, Lily will know exactly who tried to put a price on her childhood.””

That afternoon, Marcus called.

“Amara, we found the source of the email.””

I sat down.

“Tell me.””

“It originated from a private account associated with Vanessa's personal device. The metadata matches the message Daniel gave us.””

I closed my eyes.

“So she wrote it.””

“Yes. And there's something else.””

He sent a file.

It contained a series of calendar entries and meeting invitations.

One was dated two years earlier.

Another was dated eight months before Daniel first saw Lily.

I opened the earliest entry.

The title read:

*Project Carter Legacy — Initial Family Assessment.*

I scrolled.

There were notes about Daniel's marital status, my company, and the possibility of a future child.

I felt sick.

“Who attended these meetings?””

Marcus read from the report.

“Richard Reed, Vanessa Reed, Daniel Carter, and Victoria Shaw.””

I stared at the screen.

“Daniel attended?””

“According to the calendar.””

I called him immediately.

He answered on the first ring.

“Amara?””

“Did you attend a meeting called Project Carter Legacy?””

Silence.

“Where did you get that?””

“Answer me.””

He sighed.

“Yes.””

“When?””

“Two years ago.””

My throat tightened.

“You were already divorced from me.””

“Yes.””

“What was the meeting about?””

“I thought it was about business.””

“Then why was I included in the notes?””

He hesitated.

“Richard wanted to know whether you were still involved in the restaurant industry.””

“Why?””

“He said your company could become a useful acquisition target.””

I stood.

“Daniel, the meeting notes mention a future child.””

He didn't respond.

“Did you know Richard was looking for a grandchild?””

“No.””

“Did you know Vanessa had a plan involving Lily?””

“No.””

“Then why did you keep attending these meetings?””

His voice broke.

“Because I thought I was finally being offered a chance to build something.””

I closed my eyes.

“You were offered a chance to help them take something from me.””

He began speaking quickly.

“Amara, I didn't know Lily existed. I didn't know they were planning anything about her.””

“But you knew they were discussing my company.””

“Yes.””

“And you kept quiet.””

“I was ashamed.””

I ended the call.

On Friday morning, Evelyn received a response from the professional investigator examining Victoria's records.

The report contained a series of payment transfers from Reed Capital to a consulting company.

That company had paid Victoria's law firm shortly after my divorce.

The invoices described the work as corporate restructuring and asset advisory.

But the dates matched the period when Victoria had access to my confidential business information.

Evelyn studied the report.

“This is concerning.””

“Can we prove she gave them my information?””

“Not yet. But the financial relationship and the timing justify further investigation.””

She turned another page.

“There's a second issue. The forged agreement appears to have been uploaded from an account associated with Victoria's former legal assistant.””

“Who?””

“Her name is Claire Bennett.””

I wrote it down.

“Can we speak to her?””

“Not directly. We'll have to go through the proper channels.””

That afternoon, however, Claire contacted us herself.

She requested a confidential meeting.

We arranged to meet at Evelyn's office.

Claire arrived looking frightened.

She was in her early thirties, with dark hair pulled into a loose bun and a worn leather bag hanging from her shoulder.

She sat down without removing her coat.

“I know why you asked me here,” she said.

Evelyn remained calm.

“Then perhaps you can explain the document.””

Claire looked at me.

“I didn't create the agreement.””

“Did you upload it?””

She nodded.

“Victoria instructed me to.””

“When?””

“Three years ago.””

I leaned forward.

“Was my signature already on it?””

Claire swallowed.

“No. The first version didn't have a signature.””

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?””

“Victoria asked me to locate a signed document from your divorce file. She said she needed a signature sample for a corporate authorization.””

I felt the room become very still.

“Did she tell you what the document would be used for?””

“No. She said it was part of a routine filing.””

Evelyn spoke carefully.

“Did you know the authorization involved Reed Capital?””

Claire shook her head.

“Not until later.””

She opened her bag and removed a small notebook.

“I kept a record because I became uncomfortable.””

She placed it on the desk.

Inside were handwritten dates, document references, and payment descriptions.

One entry was underlined.

*September 14 — V.S. instructed signature transfer for Reed authorization.*

I stared at the page.

Evelyn looked at Claire.

“Why did you keep this?””

Claire's eyes filled.

“Because Victoria told me that if anyone ever asked, I should say Ms. Carter had signed it herself.””

I felt a chill run down my spine.

Then Claire added something that made Evelyn sit forward.

“There's another document.””

“What document?”” I asked.

Claire looked directly at me.

“The original agreement between Richard Reed and Daniel Carter.””

I froze.

“Where is it?””

“Victoria kept it in a private archive.””

“Can you access it?””

Claire nodded.

“But there's something you need to know first.””

She opened the notebook to another page.

“The agreement wasn't signed three years ago.””

I frowned.

“Then when?””

Claire swallowed.

“Six months before Daniel saw Lily at your restaurant.””

She pointed to the date.

“And it contains a clause stating that Daniel would receive a substantial payment if he successfully established legal paternity and obtained primary residential custody.””

I stared at her.

For several seconds, the only sound in the room was the ticking clock.

Daniel had told me he wanted to become a father.

But according to the agreement, someone had attached a price to that ambition.

Evelyn slowly closed the notebook.

“Claire, we need the original document.””

Claire nodded.

“I can help you get it.””

May you like

Then she looked at me.

“But if Victoria discovers I've spoken to you, she'll destroy everything.””
