Chapter 5: The Secret Behind the Divorce

I didn't sleep that night.

Daniel's message sat on my phone like a bomb I wasn't sure I wanted to detonate.

It concerns the night you conceived Lily.

I read it again at 2:17 a.m.

Then at 2:23.

Finally, I called him.

He answered immediately.

“Amara?””

“What are you talking about?””

“I need to see you.””

“Tell me now.””

He hesitated.

“Not over the phone.””

“Daniel, you don't get to send something like that and then decide when I deserve an explanation.””

He exhaled.

“It's about the night before I left.””

I sat on the edge of my bed.

“What about it?””

“I didn't leave because I stopped loving you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“That's a remarkable revision of history.””

“Please listen.””

“You told me you were in love with Vanessa.””

“I was confused.””

“You moved your belongings into her apartment before our divorce was finalized.””

“I know.””

“You let me believe I wasn't worth fighting for.””

His voice cracked.

“I know, Amara.””

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he continued.

“There was something happening at work. Richard had been pressuring me to get involved in a deal. Vanessa was part of the negotiations.””

I closed my eyes.

“What deal?””

“An investment in a hospitality company.””

My stomach tightened.

“Which company?””

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he said, “Yours.””

I stood.

“What?””

“Not Élan. Not initially. Your first restaurant.

I had seen some of your documents. I knew you were negotiating with an investor.””

I gripped the phone.

“You had no right to share my business documents.””

“I know.””

“Did you?””

“I didn't understand what I was doing.””

“That's always your excuse.””

He continued quickly.

“Richard wanted information about the business. He thought I could persuade you to accept outside funding.””

“And you refused?””

“I didn't.””

The room seemed to grow colder.

“What did you give him?””

“Your projections. Some supplier contacts. The original lease information.””

I felt sick.

Those documents had been confidential.

I had trusted my husband with them.

“You betrayed me.””

“Yes.””

“Why are you telling me this now?””

“Because Richard has started asking questions about Lily, and I think he's planning something.””

I went silent.

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Amara, I don't think Vanessa's family discovered Lily by accident.””

I looked toward the hallway where my daughter was sleeping.

“Did you tell them about her?””

“Yes.””

“When?””

“After I saw her at the restaurant.””

“Why?””

“I thought Richard could help me understand the legal situation.””

I closed my eyes.

“You gave a stranger information about our daughter?””

“He's not a stranger. He's Vanessa's father.””

“He is a man who wants to buy my company.””

Daniel had no response.

I ended the call.

At eight the next morning, I met Evelyn in her office.

She listened without interrupting as I explained the conversation.

When I finished, she placed her pen on the desk.

“Do you have any proof that Daniel shared your confidential business information?””

“He admitted it.””

“Can we get that in writing?””

“I'll ask him.””

Evelyn nodded.

“And the information about Lily?””

“He says Richard is planning something.””

“That's not enough to establish wrongdoing. But it's enough to be cautious.””

She opened a legal pad.

“Amara, I want you to consider something. If Daniel is Lily's biological father, he may have legitimate rights to seek contact. That doesn't mean he or his girlfriend's family gets unrestricted access to her information.””

“I understand.””

“Then we need to keep the parenting issue separate from the business issue.””

I nodded.

She continued.

“And I recommend that you stop communicating with Daniel privately about anything involving the company.””

“Agreed.””

Before I left, Evelyn handed me a document.

It was a request for a court-supervised paternity test.

I signed the acknowledgment.

Not because I wanted Daniel back in my life.

Because Lily deserved clarity.

Three days later, the test took place at a private medical facility.

Daniel arrived fifteen minutes early.

He wore a gray sweater instead of his usual business suit.

He looked nervous.

I brought Lily with Mrs. Collins, but I had arranged for her to spend the appointment in a separate children's room.

Daniel watched her disappear down the hallway.

“She really is beautiful,” he said.

“She's a happy child.””

“Does she ask about me?””

“Sometimes.””

“What do you tell her?””

“That she has a father who lives somewhere else.””

He nodded.

“That's fair.””

I looked at him.

“Don't mistake honesty for an invitation.””

He looked down.

A nurse called our names.

The procedure took less than ten minutes.

Daniel and I provided the samples, signed the documents, and left separately.

Outside, he caught up with me.

“Amara.””

I turned.

“I know I can't undo what happened.””

“No, you can't.””

“But I want to do this properly.””

“Then do it properly.””

He nodded.

“I'll wait for the results.””

I walked toward the car.

For once, he didn't follow.

The results arrived six days later.

I was in the Élan flagship kitchen when Evelyn called.

“Amara, the laboratory has completed the analysis.””

I stopped moving.

“And?””

“Probability of paternity: 99.99 percent.””

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The truth.

Daniel was Lily's biological father.

I had known it was likely.

But seeing it in black and white made everything feel suddenly permanent.

“Thank you,” I whispered.

“There's something else. Daniel's lawyer has requested a meeting to discuss an introductory visitation schedule.””

I took a slow breath.

“Tell them we're willing to discuss a gradual arrangement.””

“Good. I'll prepare a proposal.””

I ended the call.

Marcus approached.

“Results?””

I nodded.

“Daniel is her father.””

He placed a hand on my shoulder.

“How are you?””

“I don't know.””

He glanced toward the pastry station.

Lily was there, carefully decorating a small cupcake with pink frosting.

“Whatever happens,” he said, “she has you.””

I smiled.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel.

Thank you for allowing the test. I know I don't deserve your trust, but I want to earn Lily's.

I didn't reply.

The first supervised meeting was arranged for Saturday afternoon at a children's activity center.

I arrived with Lily at two.

Daniel was already waiting beside a table filled with coloring books, puzzles, and stuffed animals.

He stood when he saw us.

“Hello, Lily.””

She held my hand.

“Hello.””

Daniel crouched.

“I brought you something.””

He offered her a small box.

She looked at me.

I nodded.

She opened it.

Inside was a miniature wooden kitchen set.

A tiny oven. A small refrigerator. Little pots and pans.

Her eyes widened.

“It's a restaurant!””

Daniel smiled.

“I thought you might like cooking like your mommy.””

Lily looked at me.

“Can I play with it?””

“Of course.””

For the next forty minutes, she showed Daniel how to prepare imaginary pancakes.

He listened.

He asked questions.

He even let her put a pink sticker on his forehead.

For the first time since he returned, I saw something genuine in his expression.

He wasn't performing for me.

He was enjoying his daughter.

When the meeting ended, Lily hugged him.

“Bye, Daniel.””

He froze for a second before gently hugging her back.

“Goodbye, sweetheart.””

On the drive home, she talked nonstop.

“Daniel likes pancakes. He doesn't know how to make them, but I showed him.””

I smiled.

“Did you?””

“Yes. He said I was a good teacher.””

That evening, Daniel sent a message.

Thank you. Today meant more to me than I can explain.

I put my phone down.

Maybe things could become manageable.

Maybe Lily could have a relationship with her father without losing the life we had built.

Then Marcus called.

“Amara, we have a problem.””

I sat up.

“What happened?””

“Someone accessed the company's private cloud storage.””

My blood ran cold.

“What was taken?””

“The Chicago expansion files. Supplier contracts. Financial projections.””

“Can you identify the login?””

“We're tracing it.””

Then he hesitated.

“There's one more thing.””

“What?””

“The access came from a device registered to Daniel Carter.””

I stared at the wall.

“That can't be right.””

“Amara, I have the access log.””

I swallowed.

“Send it to Evelyn.””

“I already have.””

A few seconds passed.

Then Marcus added:

“There's a download confirmation, too.””

I looked at the wooden kitchen set Lily had placed beside the sofa.

Daniel had spent forty minutes playing with our daughter.

And somewhere in that same afternoon, someone had accessed my company's most confidential documents.

I called Evelyn.

But before she could answer, an email appeared on my screen.

The subject line made my hands go cold.
